Life at the Burrow was full of surprises and surprises, a far cry from Tom's Leaky Cauldron. The ghoul in the Weasley attic howled and rattled on pipes whenever it found the house too quiet. The small explosions in Fred and George's bedroom were considered perfectly normal.
Admittedly, Harry was more likable than Bunce. Mrs. Weasley mended Harry's socks herself, forcing him to refill them about four times at each meal. Mr. Weasley liked to let Harry sit next to him at dinner and kept asking him about Muggle life, about the plug and the post office.
"It's too amazing!" "Genius," said Harry, when he had finished explaining to Mr. Weasley how to use the telephone,"how many ways Muggles have come up with to live without magic.”
One fine morning, about a week after arriving at the Burrow, Bunce received a letter from Hogwarts. He had come down to breakfast with Harry and Ron that day to find Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and Ginny already seated at the table. When Ginny saw Harry, she accidentally knocked her porridge bowl over with a loud crash. Ginny knocked over something every time she saw Harry, Bunce concluded, and everyone vaguely agreed.
"A letter from the school." said Mr. Weasley. Bunce, Ron, and Harry each received an envelope in yellow parchment with green lettering. "Harry, Bunce, Dumbledore already knows you're here-there's no hiding anything from this man. You guys have it too." Fred and George walked slowly in, still in their pajamas.
For a moment, no one spoke. Everyone read the letter separately. Bunce's letter told him to take the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross on the first of September. The letter also listed the new books he would be using this year.
Second years read:
The Standard Book of Spells, Level Two, by Miranda Goshawk
Breaking With The Ghostghost by Gilderoy Lockhart
Travelling with Ghouls by Gilderoy Lockhart
A Vacationing with the Hags by Gilderoy Lockhart
Walking with Trolls by Gilderoy Lockhart
A Boat Journey with Vampires by Gilderoy Lockhart
Wandering with Werewolves by Gilderoy Lockhart
A Year with the Tibetan Thundermen by Gilderoy Lockhart
Fred finished his list and craned his neck to see Bunce.
"And you're going to buy Gilderoy Lockhart!”he said."The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher must be an admirer of his-a witch, perhaps.”
"I'm not buying it. It's all trash, and I don't have money.”Bance said.
"How can that do?" asked Fred.
"Not being able to afford it is the best reason.”Bance said.
"They're not cheap," said George, glancing quickly at his parents."Gilderoy Lockhart's books are expensive. Are you sure you're not going to buy them, Bunce?" This is against the rules."
"I'll think of a way. Don't worry.”Bangs comforted.
"Good morning, everyone." said Percy briskly.”
He sat down in the only chair left, but jumped up again and pulled out a gray feather duster from under his butt.
"Errol!" yelled Ron. He took the dying owl from Percy's hand and pulled a letter from under its wing. "It's brought Hermione's reply at last. I wrote to tell her we were going to the Dursleys 'to get you out.”
He carried Errol to a perch by the back door and tried to get him to stand on it, but he fell. Ron had no choice but to set it down on the draining board, muttering "poor thing". Then he tore open Hermione's letter and read it aloud,
Dear Ron, Bunce, and Harry, if you're there:
All the best, Harry safe, and I hope you didn't do anything illegal when you saved him, because that would get Harry into trouble too. I'm so worried. If Harry's all right, please let me know at once. But you'd better change to another owl, I think you'll be dead if you send another letter.
Of course I was busy with my homework-"How could she?”said Ron, shocked.”-- I'm going to London next Wednesday to buy textbooks. How about we meet in Diagon Alley?
"Tell me what's going on, my friend, Hermione, as soon as you can."
"Just in time. We'll go buy it that day too.”Mrs. Weasley began clearing the table."What are you doing today?”
Harry, Ron, Fred, and George were going up the hill to practice Quidditch in one of the Weasleys 'enclosure. Bunce decided to go with Mr. Weasley into his shed, which Mr. Weasley was very pleased with. (Because no one supported his drumming, only Bunce was interested.)
The following Wednesday, Mrs. Weasley woke them up early. They each ate a sandwich and put on their coats. Mrs. Weasley lifted a flowerpot from the kitchen mantelpiece and peered inside.
" Not much, Arthur." She sighed." We have to buy some today. Okay, after you!" Harry, you first!"
She handed the flower pot to him.
"What-what should I do?" he stammered.
"He hasn't traveled with Floo powder," said Ron suddenly."Sorry, Harry, I forgot.”
"Never used it?" said Mr. Weasley."Then how did you manage to get your school supplies in Diagon Alley last year?”
" I took the subway."
"Is that so?" said Mr. Weasley enthusiastically. What the hell-"
"Don't ask now, Arthur," said Mrs. Weasley."Harry's much faster with Floo powder, but, dear me, if you've never used it before-"
"He'll be fine, Mom." said Fred."Harry, let's see what we can do first.”
He picked up some of the powder that lit up the towel from the flowerpot, walked to the fire, and threw the powder into the flames.
With a whoosh, the fire turned emerald green and rose higher than Fred. He walked straight into the fire and shouted,"Diagon Alley!”It disappeared in the blink of an eye.
"Say those words clearly, boy," Mrs. Weasley said to Harry, and George put his hand into the pot."Don't come out of the wrong door."
"Don't go wrong about what?" said Harry nervously, as the flames roared and swept George away with them.
"You know, there are many types of fire, you have to choose right, but as long as you speak clearly-"
"He'll be fine, Molly, don't be so nervous.”said Mr. Weasley, taking some Floo powder as well.
"But dear, if he gets lost, what are we going to tell his aunt and uncle?”
"They won't be in a hurry." Harry said reassuringly."Dudley'll think it's a great joke that I disappeared down the chimney, don't worry.”
"Alright then, you walk behind Arthur.”said Mrs. Weasley."Remember, as soon as you step into the fire, say where you're going-"
"Clench your elbows." said Ron.
"Close your eyes," said Mrs. Weasley."There's soot-"
"Don't move," said Ron,"or you'll fall out of the other door-"
"But don't panic, don't come out too early, wait until you see Fred and George.”
"Don't worry, you'll be all right, Hagrid'll find you.”Bunce whispered in Harry's ear.
"What?" said Harry, puzzled.
"It's nothing." Bance said.
Harry reached out for some Floo powder and walked over to the fire. He took a deep breath, scattered the powder into the fire, and walked forward. The flame was like a hot wind. He opened his mouth and immediately inhaled a large mouthful of burning ash.
"Yes-Diagon Alley," Harry coughed.
Ron muttered as Harry disappeared.”
"You first, or me first?" asked Bangs.
"You go first." said Ron.
"See you later then." Bunce grabbed Floo powder and threw it into the flames, shouting,"Diagon Alley.”
Bunce had an unpleasant flight, as if he had been sucked into a pipe. As soon as she emerged from the furnace door, she saw Mr. Weasley pacing anxiously.
"Thank you, Merlin. Bangs, you didn't enter the wrong furnace door.”said Mr. Weasley, wiping sweat from his forehead.”
"No need, Harry'll be at Gringotts soon, let's go there and find him.”Bance said.
"Why?" asked Mr. Weasley.
Bangs did not answer.
When they reached Gringotts, they found Harry standing next to Hagrid and Hermione, covered in dust and with cracked eyes.
"Harry, we hope you missed only one oven door." He rubbed his shiny bald head again.
"Molly's going crazy-she'll be here soon.”
"Where did you come from?" asked Ron.
"Knockturn Alley." said Hagrid grimly.
"That's great!" yelled Fred and George together.
"The adults never let us go.”said Ron enviously.
"I don't think it's a good idea," said Hagrid gruffly.
Mrs. Weasley was hurrying toward them, her handbag swinging wildly in one hand; Ginny followed, dragging her free hand.
"Oh, Harry-oh, dear-I'm glad you're all right, I'm glad you're all right-"
Panting, she took a coat brush out of her bag and began to brush the soot off Harry. Mr. Weasley took Harry's eyes, tapped them lightly with his wand, and returned them as good as new.
"Well, I have to go." said Hagrid, whose hand was clutched tightly by Mrs. Weasley ("Knockturn Alley! Thanks to you, Hagrid!"). "See you at Hogwarts!" He strode forward, a head and a shoulder taller than anyone else on the street.
"Guess who I saw at Borgin and Burkes?”Harry asked as they climbed the Gringotts steps.
"Malfoy and his father?”Bance said.
"How did you know?" said Harry, surprised.
"Yeah, Bunce, why do you seem to know everything?”said Mr. Weasley.
"Yeah, Bunce told me not to worry about Hagrid before I started using Floo powder.”said Harry unloyally.
"What?" Everyone looked at Bangs in surprise.
"Don't look at me like that. I won't be able to come to my senses.”Bangs said calmly.
"Could it be that you have the bloodline of a prophet in your family?”asked Mr. Weasley.
"Something like that. I do know a lot.”Bance said.
"Then what will my future be like?”asked Ron.
"Yeah, we're still here." said Fred and George.
"Alright, don't ask anymore. Even a prophet can't say it casually, right?”said Mrs. Weasley.
"Yes, it changed after I said it.”Bance said.
"Ah, that's a Muggle!" Mr. Weasley saw Hermione's parents standing awkwardly at the counter that spanned the marble floor, waiting for Hermione to introduce them. "We must go for a drink! What's that in your hand? Oh, you're exchanging Muggle currency. Molly, look!" he said excitedly, pointing at the notes in Mr. Granger's hand.
"Bance, why didn't you come over? Aren't you going to withdraw money?" asked Harry.
"I'm so poor. How can I save money?”Bang Si said unhappily," You guys go ahead. I'll just look around here and wait for you guys to come up.”
"Then I'll see you here later." said Ron.
They parted on the marble steps outside the bank. Percy muttered about wanting a new quill, and Fred and George spotted their Hogwarts friend, Lee Jordan. Mrs. Weasley and Ginny were going to a second-hand robe shop. Mr. Weasley insisted on taking the Granger family to the Leaky Cauldron for a drink.
"Meet me at Flourish and Blotts in an hour to buy your books.”said Mrs. Weasley, setting off with Ginny. "Don't go to Knockturn Alley!" she shouted at the twins.
Bang Si and the others strolled along the cobblestone winding street, the sound of gold, silver, and copper coins colliding in the pockets of Big Boss Harry tempting Bang Si and Ron's hearts. Bunce blackmailed Harry into buying four large strawberry and peanut butter ice cream. They happily ate ice cream and wandered through the alleys, browsing through the dazzling display of shop windows. Ron stared longingly at the full set of Chudley Cannon robes displayed in the window of the Quidditch boutique until Hermione dragged them off to a nearby shop to buy ink and parchment. At the Bouncing and Frolicking Magical Joke Shop, they ran into Fred, George, and Lee Jordan. They were buying Dr. Filibert's auto-ignition, water-blooming magical fireworks in bulk. In a second-hand shop full of worn-out wands, wobbly copper scales, and old, drug-stained cloaks, they found Percy absorbed in a very dull book: How Prefects Gained Power.
"Prefects at Hogwarts and their careers after school," said Ron, reading aloud the back cover."Sounds fascinating."
"Go away." said Percy crossly.
"Of course, Percy's ambitious, he's got it all planned out-he's going to be Minister of Magic," Ron whispered as they left Percy.
An hour later, they were heading for Flourish and Blotts, where they were far from the only ones there. They were surprised to find a large crowd of people crowding outside the shop, trying to get in. A large banner was pulled out from upstairs:
Gilderoy Lockhart
Selling autographs and autobiographies
The Me Who Can Magic
Today, from 12:30 to 4:30
"We can see him face to face!”cried Hermione."I mean, he wrote almost all the books on the list!”
Most of the crowd seemed to be witches of Mrs. Weasley's age. A tired-looking wizard stood at the door and said,""Ladies, be quiet. Don't be afraid of the books."
Bang Si and the others squeezed through the crowd. The line meandered from the entrance to the back of the bookstore. Gilderoy 8226; Lockhart was there signing books. They each grabbed a copy of Breaking With The Ghostghost (except Bunce) and snuck over to where the Weasleys and the Grangers were queuing.
"Oh, you guys are here. That's great.”said Mrs. Weasley. Her breathing was rapid and she kept patting her hair. "We'll see him soon."
Slowly, they caught sight of Gilderoy Lockhart. He was sitting behind the desk, surrounded by large photographs of himself, all of which were winking at the crowd and flashing dazzling white teeth. The real Lockhart was wearing a robe of forget-me-not blue that matched his blue eyes. The pointed wizard hat was tilted playfully on his head.
A short, grumpy man held up a large black camera and jumped in front of and behind him to take pictures. Every time the flash flashed, the camera spewed puffs of purple smoke.
"Move aside." he shouted at Ron, backing away to get a better angle."This is for the Daily Prophet.”
"Amazing." said Ron, rubbing his foot, which had been stepped on.
Gilderoy Lockhart heard it. He looked up and saw Ron, then Harry. (Bunce was ignored) He stared at Harry for a moment, then jumped up and shouted,"Isn't that Harry Potter?"
The crowd parted to make way, murmuring excitedly. Lockhart rushed forward, seized Harry's arm, and pulled him forward. The crowd burst into applause. Bunce saw Harry blushing, and Lockhart shook his hand for the photographer to take pictures. The short man pressed the shutter frantically, and plumes of smoke billowed over the Weasleys.
"Nice smile, Harry," Lockhart showed his own glistening teeth."We'll be on the front page.”
"Ladies and gentlemen," said Lockhart loudly, waving for silence,"what an extraordinary moment this is! I'm going to use this wonderful occasion to make a small announcement, which I've been holding back for some time.”
"When young Harry walked into Flourish and Blotts today, all he wanted to do was buy my autobiography-I'd give it to him for free on the spot-" There was another round of applause."But he didn't know," Lockhart continued, shaking Harry,"that he was about to get something more valuable than my book, The Magical Me, and that he and his classmates were about to get the real, magical me. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is with the greatest pleasure and pride that I announce that this September I will be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!”
The crowd clapped and cheered as Harry dumped the entire collection into Ginny's new cauldron, carrying it heavily in his arms."These are for you. I'll buy them myself."
"You must like it, Potter?”said Malfoy, wearing his usual mocking smile.
"The famous Harry Potter," said Malfoy,"couldn't even enter a bookstore without making the front page.”
"Don't talk nonsense. He doesn't want that!" said Ginny, glaring at Malfoy for the first time in front of Harry.
"Potter, you've got yourself a girlfriend!”drawled Malfoy, and Ginny blushed.
"Looks like you haven't learned your lesson, Malfoy.”said Bunce, appearing beside Malfoy.
"It's you again, Flay. You'll regret going against me sooner or later.”said Malfoy, backing away.
"Oh, really?" Bangs said with a smile.
"Argh-Arthur Weasley.”
It was Mr. Malfoy. He put a hand on Draco's shoulder; He had the same mocking smile on his face as his son.
"Lucius," said Mr. Weasley coldly.
"I hear you've got a lot of work to do, old man," said Mr. Malfoy."I suppose they've paid you overtime for all the raids?”
He put his hand into Ginny's cauldron and pulled a tattered copy of A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration out of the shiny new Lockhart books.
"It seems that there isn't. My God, if you can't even get a good reward, what good is it to be a scum among wizards?”
Mr. Weasley's face was redder than Ginny's.
"We have very different ideas about what a wizarding scum is, Malfoy.”he said.
"Of course," said Mr. Malfoy. His pale eyes turned to the Grangers, who were watching them nervously. "Look at the friends you've made, Weasley. I thought your family had sunk to the bottom.”
Ginny's cauldron flew out with a crash. Mr. Weasley lunged at Mr. Malfoy, knocking him into a bookshelf and sending dozens of thick spellbooks crashing down on their heads. Bangs dragged Draco along and said,"Why aren't you helping?" Ron, Harry, Fred, and George had all joined in the torturing of Draco, who had no choice but to protect his swollen face. Mrs. Weasley shrieked,"Come on, Arthur, you'd better stop too!"”The crowd retreated in panic, knocking over more bookshelves. "Gentlemen, please-please.”The shop assistant shouted with a sad face. Then, a loud voice drowned out all the other voices."Spread out, gentlemen, spread out-"
Hagrid strode over the floor of books and pulled Mr. Weasley and Mr. Malfoy apart in the blink of an eye. Mr. Weasley's lip was broken, and Mr. Malfoy had one swollen eye, still clutching Ginny's old Transfiguration book. Bance and the others gradually stopped. Mr. Malfoy thrust the book into Ginny's hands, his eyes glinting maliciously.
"Now, little girl-take your book-it's the best thing your father can give you-"
He broke free of Hagrid's arm, picked up the beaten Draco, and rushed out of the shop, looking back at Bunce with a venomous look.
"You shouldn't have talked to him, Arthur," said Hagrid, stretching out his hand to smooth Mr. Weasley's robes so that he almost lifted him up. Come, let's go out."
The clerk looked as if he wanted to stop them, but he was only about Hagrid's waist and didn't dare. They walked quickly into the street, the Grangers shaking with fear and Mrs. Weasley furious.
"You've set a good example for the boys, fighting in public and seeing Malfoy beaten up like that.”
"It's all right, don't worry, Mrs. Weasley, I won't die.”Bangs comforted.
"Yeah, Mum, look how he insulted Harry.”said Ron.
"Yeah, Malfoy's really annoying.”said Harry.
By the time they reached the fireplace in the Leaky Cauldron, however, they were much calmer. Bunce, Harry, the Weasleys, and all their purchases were to be transported back to the Burrow in Floo powder. The Granger family was going back to the Muggle street. Mr. Weasley wanted to ask them what the bus station looked like as they said goodbye at the bar, but the look on Mrs. Weasley's face made him shut up.
Flying in the fireplace really wasn't Bangs 'favorite way of traveling, he thought as he collected Floo powder.
