"You've really decided to make Polyjuice Potion and go to the Slytherin lounge?”Bangs asked as he ate his breakfast.
"Yes, this is the most reliable method we can think of.”said Hermione, pursing her lips.
"Harry and I don't approve of it," Ron muttered.
"If I told you that even if you used that, you wouldn't get what you want to know, would you still go?”Bangs wiped his mouth and said.
"Yes."
"No."
Harry and Ron received a nasty look from Hermione.
"Yes." The two clowns changed their words.
"Then I won't say anymore. You guys take care of yourselves.”Bangs stood up and said.
Lockhart hadn't brought living things into class since the elf disaster. Now he read his books at length to his students, sometimes acting out dramatic parts. He usually chose Harry to help him recreate the scene. Harry had been forced to play many roles so far.
The bell rang and Lockhart got to his feet.
"Homework: Write a poem about my victory over Wagga Wagga! The best would receive several copies of The Magical Me with the author's autograph!”
The students began to leave.
"Is that enough?" Harry whispered.
"Wait until everyone's gone," said Hermione."That's enough."
She set off toward Lockhart's desk, clutching a note in her hand, Bunce, Harry, and Ron following her.
"Er-Professor Lockhart?" Hermione stammered."I wanted to-wanted to borrow this book from the library. He hoped to learn some background knowledge from it.”She raised the piece of paper, her hand trembling slightly. "But the problem is, it's in the library's private section, so I need a teacher to sign the slip-I believe it will help me understand the slow-acting venom you talked about in Walking with Ghouls."
"Ah, Travelling with Ghouls!”Lockhart took the note from Hermione, smiling warmly at her. "This is probably the book I'm most satisfied with. Do you like it?"
"Oh, yes," said Hermione eagerly."You caught the last ghoul with the tea strainers, very clever of you."
"Well, I'm sure no one would object to me giving the best of the year a little extra help.”said Lockhart warmly, pulling out a large peacock brush. "Yes, it's beautiful, isn't it?”He misread the look of disgust on Ron's face."I usually only sign books with it.”
He signed his name in a large, cursive font on the note and handed it back to Hermione.
"So, Harry," said Lockhart, as Hermione clumsily folded the note and put it in her pocket,"tomorrow is the first Quidditch match of the season? Gryffindor versus Slytherin, was it? I heard that you are a very good player. I used to be a Seeker. They want me to run for the national team, but I'd rather devote my life to eliminating the underworld. However, if you feel that you need a special treatment, feel free to come to me. I'm always happy to pass on my experience to players who are not too strong."
"I can't believe it," said Harry."He didn't even look at what we wanted.”
"Because he is a brainless fool.”said Ron."Whatever, we've got what we wanted anyway.”
"No, he saw it three times." Bance said.
"Then why did he sign it?”said Harry doubtfully.
"Because he doesn't even know what book it is.”said Bunce."Just like Ron said, he's just a mindless fool.”
"He is not a brainless fool.”said Hermione shrilly as they set off for the library.
"Just because he said you were the best student in the year?”said Ron defiantly.
They had no choice but to stop arguing when they entered the quiet library.
Madam Pince, the librarian, was a thin, grumpy woman who looked like a malnourished vulture.
"Powerful Potion?" she read it suspiciously, trying to take it from Hermione; But Hermione wouldn't let go.
"I wonder if I can keep it." said Hermione breathlessly.
"Oh, give it to her," said Ron, snatching the note from her clenched hand and shoving it at Madam Pince."We'll get you another autograph." Lockhart would sign anything that would stand still for a while.”
Madam Pince held up the note and shone it against the light, as if to check if it was a forgery. It passed the test smoothly. She strutted through the tall bookshelves and returned a few minutes later, holding a large, moldy book. Hermione put it carefully into her bag, taking care not to walk too fast and look guilty.
Five minutes later, they were once again hiding in Moaning Myrtle's dilapidated bathroom. Hermione overruled Ron's objections, pointing out that no one in their right mind would want to come here, so they were guaranteed to be undiscovered. Moaning Myrtle was bawling in her cell, ignoring them and ignoring them.
Hermione opened Power Potions gingerly, and all four of them leaned forward to look at the watermarked pages. Bang Si could tell at a glance why this book belonged to the ** section. The effects of some of the potions were so terrifying that it was hard to imagine. There were also some pictures that made people feel uncomfortable: A person seemed to have been turned inside out, and a witch had many arms sticking out of her head.
"Here." said Hermione excitedly, finding the page marked Polyjuice Potion. There was a picture of a person turning into another person.
"This is the most complicated potion I have ever seen.”said Hermione.
" That's because you're only in second grade." Bance said. "I haven't seen much of the world."
"You seem to have seen it before." snapped Hermione.
"I've indeed seen it before, and I still say that it's meaningless.”Bangs advised.
Hermione snapped the book shut.
"Well, you know, I don't want to break the school rules. I think threatening Muggle-born people is far worse than concocting a complicated potion. "But if you don't want to know whether Malfoy did it, I'll go to Madam Pince right now and give her the book back," said Hermione, blushing and excited.
"It wasn't Malfoy, I assure you, he's not qualified.”Bance said.
"I don't believe it. Look at his face at that time, look at his entire family.”said Hermione.
"There are many things that you don't believe, and I don't intend to convince you.”Bangs said as he walked out of the bathroom.
Harry woke early on Saturday morning to find Bunce sitting in bed reading.
"How come you like reading in bed as much as Hermione does?”said Harry, puzzled.
"To wait for you. Besides, I'm different from her. She's knowledgeable while I'm proficient.”Bangs said without looking up.
"What are you so engrossed in?" said Harry doubtfully.
"The Dark Arts. It's a good book.”Bance said.
"This seems to be a **, how did you borrow it?”asked Harry.
"I borrowed it from Madam Pince." said Bunce. Lend me your Invisibility Cloak."
"What do you want to do with it?" said Harry, pulling the Invisibility Cloak out of his trunk and handing it to Bunce.
"Wait, you'll know after the competition.”said Bunce, taking the Cloak.
"You're always like this, Bunce, so unpredictable.”Harry complained as he lay back down, and Ron next door began to snore loudly.
The first match of the term went on as usual, with Harry dislocating his arm to win, and Lockhart's clumsy magic causing Harry to lose all the bones in his arm.
"You should have come to me directly!" said Madam Pomfrey angrily."I can set the bones back in a second-but to get them to grow back-"
"You will too, won't you?" said Harry urgently.
"Of course I will, but it will be very painful.”said Madam Pomfrey grimly, throwing Harry a set of pajamas.
The curtains around Harry's bed had been drawn; Ron was helping Harry into his pajamas while Hermione waited outside. It took them some time to get the rubberish, boneless arm into their sleeves.
"Why are you still protecting Lockhart, Hermione?”Ron shouted through the curtain, pulling Harry's limp fingers out of his cuffs one by one.”
"Everybody makes mistakes," said Hermione."And it's not hurting anymore, is it, Harry?”
"It doesn't hurt," said Harry,"but it can't do anything.”
Hermione and Madam Pomfrey came around the curtain. Madam Pomfrey was holding a large bottle labeled "Bone Forming Spirit."
"It's been a rough night," she said, pouring out a steaming mug and handing it to Harry."Bones are a hard thing to grow.”
"You're hurt, but we won," said Ron, grinning."Thanks to you for catching the Snitch. He looked like he wanted to kill!”
"I'd like to know what he did to that Bludger.”said Hermione angrily.
"We can put that on the list and ask him together after we've drunk the Polyjuice Potion.”said Harry, throwing his head back on his pillow."I hope the Polyjuice Potion tastes better than this."
"What if there's something from Slytherin in there? You really know how to joke." said Ron.
At that moment, the door to the ward burst open. The Gryffindor team had arrived to see Harry. They were all covered in mud, like drenched chickens.
"Harry, you flew so well," said George."I just saw Marcus yelling at Malfoy. Something about the Snitch being right above his head, he couldn't even see it. Malfoy did not look pleased.”
The team members brought cakes, candy, and several bottles of pumpkin juice. They were all gathered around Harry's bed, about to have a very merry party, when Madam Pomfrey burst in, bellowing,"This boy needs rest, he's got thirty-three bones to grow! Get out! Get out!"
When Harry was the only one left in the room, a voice suddenly said,"Are you all right, Harry?"
"Who is it? Why are you here, Bunce?" said Harry, surprised.
"I've always been here." Bangs said, smiling and waving the Invisibility Cloak in his hand.
"What are you doing here?" said Harry miserably.
"I came to see you, by the way-" Bunce turned to see a creature appear with a pop.
"How are you, Dobby?" Bangs continued to ask.
The house-elf was sizing Bunce up through the darkness with his large, tennis ball eyes.
"Who are you, sir? How do you know about Dobby?" asked Dobby anxiously.
"Don't worry, Dobby. I know a lot, I know you're a kind elf, I know you want freedom, I know what you've done for Harry, even if it's not the right way.”Bangs said as he sat on the edge of the bed.
Dobby looked at Bunce in surprise. How do you know it was Dobby who sealed the walls? How did you know the Bludger was Dobby's?”
"You did it! You did the Bludgers too, you almost got Ron and me expelled, you almost got me killed by a Bludger. You'd better get out of my way before my bones grow back, Dobby, or I'll strangle you.”said Harry irritably.
Dobby smiled faintly.
"Dobby is used to the threat of death. Dobby heard it five times a day at home.”
He wiped his nose with a corner of the dirty pillowcase he was wearing, looking pitiful.
"Why are you wearing that thing, Dobby?”asked Harry curiously.
"This? Sir?" said Dobby, tugging at the pillowcase."It symbolizes the house-elf's slavery, sir. Dobby will only be free when his master gives him clothes to wear. The family was careful not to give Dobby even a pair of socks, sir, because then Dobby would be free and out of their house forever.”
Dobby rubbed his large bulging eyes and said suddenly,"Harry Potter must go home, Dobby wants to save Harry Potter's life! It's better to be sent home with a serious injury than to stay here, sir. All Dobby wanted was for Harry Potter to be slightly hurt and sent home!”
"Oh, is that all?" said Harry angrily."I suppose you're not going to tell me why you want me sent home in pieces?”
"Ah, if only Harry Potter knew!”moaned Dobby, more tears rolling down his ragged pillowcase. "If only he knew what he meant to us lowly, enslaved beings in the Wizarding world! Dobby has not forgotten how He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was at his peak, sir! People treat us house-elves like vermin, sir! Of course, they still do that to Dobby, sir.”he admitted, wiping his face again. "But all in all, our lives have improved greatly since you defeated He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Called. Harry Potter survived, and the evil demon's power was broken. This is a new beginning, sir. For those of us who think the dark days will never end, Harry Potter shines like a beacon of hope, sir... And now, at Hogwarts, something terrible is about to happen, it may have already happened, and Dobby can't let Harry Potter stay here, because history is about to repeat itself, the Chamber of Secrets is about to be opened again-"
Dobby froze, terrified, then grabbed Harry's jug from the bedside table and tried to smash his own head. However, he found that his hands were grabbed by Bangs, and he muttered in a low voice,"Bad Dobby, very bad Dobby..."
"So, there really is a secret chamber?”Harry whispered."And-you said it's been opened before? Tell me, Dobby!"
"Ah, sir, don't ask, don't ask poor Dobby.”stammered the elf, his eyes ringing in the darkness. "There's a conspiracy going on here, and Harry Potter mustn't be here while it's happening. Go home, Harry Potter. Go home, Harry Potter mustn't get involved in this, sir, it's too dangerous-"
"Who is it, Dobby?" said Harry, seizing Dobby's wrist firmly. "Who opened the secret chamber? Who opened it last time?"
"Dobby mustn't, sir, Dobby mustn't, Dobby mustn't!”shrieked the elf.
"Would you rather see Harry die? Won't you help the great Harry Potter?”asked Bangs.
"Last time it was-" Dobby froze, his batlike ears trembling. Bangs heard it too, footsteps in the corridor outside.
"Dobby must go!" the elf panted in fright. There was a loud crack and Dobby was gone, and Bunce had put on his Invisibility Cloak and stood in a corner.
Then Dumbledore stepped back into the ward. He was wearing a long woolen dressing gown and a nightcap. He was holding one end of a sculpture-like object with both hands. A second later, Professor McGonagall appeared, holding the thing's foot. They put it on the bed together.
"Go get Madam Pomfrey," said Dumbledore, and Professor McGonagall hurried past Harry's bedside and out, who lay motionless and pretending to be asleep. Bunce heard an urgent voice, and Professor McGonagall came flying in again, followed by Madam Pomfrey, who was pulling a jacket over her pajamas.
"What happened?" Madam Pomfrey whispered to Dumbledore, bending over the statue.
"Another attack," said Dumbledore."McGonagall found him on the stairs.”
"He's got a bunch of grapes with him," said Professor McGonagall."We think he's trying to sneak in here to see Potter.”
The petrified man was Colin Creevey. His eyes were wide open and his hands were outstretched, holding his camera.
"Petrified?" whispered Madam Pomfrey.
"Yes," said Professor McGonagall."I shudder at the thought of it. If Albus hadn't happened to come downstairs for hot chocolate, who knows what would have happened?"
The three of them stared intently at Colin. Then Dumbledore leaned forward and took the camera from Colin's stiff fingers.
"Will he take a photo of the attacker?”said Professor McGonagall eagerly.
Dumbledore did not answer. He pried open the back of the camera.
"My goodness!" exclaimed Madam Pomfrey.
A stream of hot air hissed out of the camera. Even Bangs, who was three beds away, could smell the pungent smell of burning plastic.
"It's melted," said Madam Pomfrey in surprise."It's all melted."
"What does that mean, Albus?”said Professor McGonagall urgently.
"It means," said Dumbledore,"that the Chamber of Secrets has indeed been opened again.”
Madam Pomfrey put her hand over her mouth. Professor McGonagall stared at Dumbledore.
"But you must know who, Albus?”
"The question is not who," said Dumbledore, his eyes fixed on the spot where Bunce was standing."The question is how."
