On the morning of the first of September, Tom woke Bunce up as usual with his toothless smile and a cup of tea. Bunce got up and dressed as Ron burst into the room, still pulling a sweatshirt over his head and looking angry.

"What's wrong with you?" asked Bunce."Percy's blaming you again?”

"Yeah, he said I dropped tea on his picture of Penelope. You know,"said Ron grimacing," his girlfriend. She's already hiding her face under the frame because her nose is full of tea."

Harry entered the room and said,"I have something to tell you.”But Fred and George had disturbed them of late. They'd come to visit and congratulate Ron for making Percy angry again.

They went down to breakfast together, where Mr. Weasley was reading the front page of the Daily Prophet, frowning, and Mrs. Weasley was telling Hermione and Ginny about a potion she had made as children. The three of them were laughing foolishly.

"What did you want to say just now?" Ron asked Harry as they sat down.

"I'll tell you later." Harry muttered as Percy stormed in.

In the chaos before departure, Bangs and the others didn't have a chance to talk. They were busy carrying all their trunks down the narrow stairs of the Leaky Cauldron and piling them up by the front door. Harry's Hedwig and Percy's squeaky Hermes were in their respective cages, on top of their luggage. A small wicker basket was placed next to the pile of boxes, grunting noisily.

"It's all right, Crookshanks," said Hermione, coaxing the cat over the basket."I'll let you out when we're on the train.”

"Don't," said Ron sharply."What about poor Scabbers, eh?”

He pointed at his chest, where a large lump had appeared, indicating that Scabbers was hiding in Ron's pocket.

Mr. Weasley, who had been waiting outside for the Ministry car, now stuck his head in.

"The car is here." he said."Come on, Harry."

Mr. Weasley forced Harry across a short stretch of sidewalk to the first car. Bunce, Hermione, and Ron followed; To Ron's disgust, Percy had joined them.

They reached King's Cross, twenty minutes before the train arrived; The Ministry chauffeur helped them find a trolley, unloaded their trunks, touched his hand on his hat to Mr. Weasley's, and drove away.

Mr. Weasley followed Harry closely until they reached the station.

" Now," he said, looking around at the students," there are so many of us. Everyone, stand in pairs. I was first, Harry was with me.”

Bunce and Ron were soon passing through the seemingly solid wall to join in the search for empty seats. They walked past the carriages that were full of people and came to a carriage that looked very empty. They put all their trunks on the train and got off to say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.

Mrs. Weasley kissed each of her children good-bye, then Hermione, Bunce, and gave Harry a special hug.

As Bunce said his goodbyes and walked back to the train, Mrs. Weasley called,"Arthur! What are you doing? Time to go!"

"He's coming, Molly!" shouted Mr. Weasley.

A loud whistle blew. The railway workers walked along the train and closed all the doors.

"Arthur, hurry!" called Mrs. Weasley.

The train began to move, spewing steam. Harry ran to the carriage door, Ron opened it and stepped aside, and Bunce pulled Harry up. Then they leaned over the window and waved at Mr. and Mrs. Weasley until the train had turned the corner and they were out of sight.

"I need to talk to you in private.”Harry said to Bunce, Ron, and Hermione as the train picked up speed.

"Go away, Ginny," said Ron.

"Oh, that's not bad." said Ginny haughtily, walking away.

All the carriages were full, and Bunce had to take them to the last one.

There was only one person in this carriage. This person was sitting by the window and sleeping soundly. The stranger was wearing an extremely tattered wizard's robe, patched in several places. He looked sick and exhausted. He still looked very young, but his light brown hair was already mixed with white hair.

"Who do you think he is?" squeaked Ron. They sat down and closed the door.

"Remus Lupin," Bance said.

"Also known as r... Professor J. Lupin." Hermione added.

"How did you know?" asked Ron.

"Isn't it written on his box?”said Hermione, pointing to the rack on the man's upper deck, where a small, battered trunk was tied up neatly with many ropes. "Professor R.J. Lupin" was printed in a corner of the box, the lettering peeling off.

"I wonder what he teaches?" said Ron, frowning at Professor Lupin's lifeless profile.

"Apparently," said Hermione,"there's only one empty seat, isn't there?‘Defense Against the Dark Arts."

"Well, I hope he's up to the task." said Ron suspiciously."As if a spell would finish him off, doesn't he look? Anyway,"he turned to Harry," what did you want to tell us?”

Harry told them about the argument he had overheard between Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, about Mr. Weasley's warning, and so on. When he had finished, Ron looked as though he had been struck by lightning, Hermione covered her mouth with her hands, and Bunce laughed.

"Do you think it's funny?" said Ron, recovering.

"That's what it is." Bance said.

"I don't know how you can still laugh, don't you care that Sirius Black escaped to get Harry? Oh, Harry, you must be careful, very careful. "Don't ask for trouble, Harry," Hermione muttered.

"I'm not asking for trouble, trouble usually comes to me.”said Harry angrily.

"How stupid could Harry be to go after a lunatic who wanted to kill him?”said Ron shakily.

"Don't worry, Harry," Bangs comforted.

Both Ron and Hermione seemed to be more afraid of Black than Harry.

"I don't know why you're scared of him, Harry's tougher than you are.”Bance said.

"No one knows how he got out of Azkaban, no one's ever done it before, and he's a top criminal.”said Ron awkwardly.

"But they'll catch him, won't they?”said Hermione earnestly."I mean, they've got all the Muggles out looking for him."

"It's not that simple." Bance said.

"And you know all about it, Harry's in danger?”asked Ron.

"Yes, why not? There's danger coming soon.”Bangs joked.

"Ah, it's not Black, is it?”said Ron in horror.

"Is that possible?" asked Bangs.

"I don't think that's possible." said Harry.

"Do you know much about Hogsmeade?”said Hermione, changing the subject."I read that this is the only place in Britain where there are no Muggles-"

"Yeah, I think so," said Ron carelessly,"but that's not why I want to go. I just want to go to Honeydukes!"

"What's that?" asked Hermione.

"It's a candy shop," said Ron, with a dreamy look on his face."They've got pepper kids for everything-they smoke when they eat them-and oily chocolate balls full of strawberry custard and regular custard, and really wonderful sugar quills you can suck on in class, like you're thinking about what to write next-"

"But Hogsmeade's a very interesting place, isn't it?”said Hermione eagerly. "According to Wizarding Relics, the inn was the headquarters of the 1612 goblin rebellion, and the Shrieking Shack is probably the most haunted house in all of England-"

"The enormous sorbet balls keep you inches off the ground as you suck.”said Ron, who was sure he hadn't heard a word Hermione had said.

Hermione looked at Bunce.

"Isn't it nice to get away from school for a little while and explore Hogsmeade?”

"Just like that." Bance said.

"You've never been there." said Hermione, her eyes white.

"I also think that place sounds good, but when you have this feeling, you must tell me.”said Harry dully.

"What do you mean by that?" asked Ron.

"I can't go. The Dursleys didn't sign the consent form for me, and Fudge wouldn't.”said Harry sadly.

Ron looked terrified.

"You're not allowed to go? But-maybe-Professor McGonagall or someone else will let you go-"

Harry gave a hollow laugh. Professor McGonagall, head of Gryffindor House, was a very strict person.

"-or we could ask Fred and George, they know every secret passage out of the castle-"

"Ron!" said Hermione sharply."I don't think Harry should have snuck out of school while Black was still out there-"

"Yeah, I expect Professor McGonagall will say that when I ask for permission.”said Harry miserably.

"There will be a solution. Don't be too sad.”Bance said.

"But if we're with him," said Ron angrily to Hermione,"Black wouldn't dare-"

"Don't be silly, Ron," Hermione snapped."Black's already killed so many people in the crowded street, do you really think he'll stop after Harry just because we're there?”

she said, fumbling with the straps around Crookshanks 'basket.

"Don't let this thing out!" said Ron. But it was too late. Crookshanks jumped easily out of his basket, stretched, yawned, and hopped onto Ron's lap; The lump in Ron's pocket began to tremble, and Ron drove Crookshanks away angrily.

"Get lost!"

"Ron, don't!" said Hermione angrily.

Ron was about to retort when Professor Lupin moved. Ron looked at him fearfully, but he simply turned his head in the other direction, opened his mouth slightly, and went back to sleep.

The Hogwarts Express was steadily moving north, the scenery outside growing wilder and darker, the clouds growing thicker overhead. Outside the door of their carriage, there were people walking back and forth. Crookshanks was now safely settled in an empty seat, his squashed cat face turned to Ron, his yellow eyes fixed on Ron's pocket.

At one o'clock, the food cart arrived at their carriage door.

"Do you think we should wake him up?”said Ron awkwardly, looking at Professor Lupin.”

Hermione approached Professor Lupin cautiously.

"Er-Professor?" she said."I'm sorry-Professor?”

He still did not move.

"Don't worry, my dear," said the witch, handing Bunce a handful of chocolate."If he wakes up hungry, he'll find me at the driver's.”

"Is he sleeping?" said Ron, eating his cake, as the witch closed the carriage door."I mean-he's not dead, is he?”

"No, no, he's breathing.”said Hermione, taking the wok of scones Harry had handed her.

In the afternoon, when it began to rain, blurring the outline of the rolling hills outside the window, they heard footsteps again in the corridor, and then three people they disliked the most: Draco Malfoy was followed by two of his closest friends, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.

"Well, look who it is," said Malfoy in his usual lazy drawl, pulling open the compartment door.

Goyle and Crabbe laughed noisily.

"Honestly, you surprise me, Malfoy.”Bance said.

"It's you again, Flay." said Malfoy, pursing his lips.

"It's me. Your family didn't beg for food because your father was fired from the board of directors, right?”Bangs said sarcastically.

Harry and Ron laughed.

Malfoy blushed and changed the subject."I heard your dad finally hit the jackpot this summer, Weasley? Your mother didn't die of shock, did she?"

Ron got to his feet so quickly that he kicked Crookshanks's basket to the ground. Professor Lupin snorted.

"Then who is it?" said Malfoy, backing away.

"A new teacher." said Harry, standing up too."What did you say, Malfoy?”

"Let's go." Malfoy muttered angrily to Crabbe and Goyle.

Harry helped Ron sit down, who was rubbing his knuckles.

"I'm not listening to Malfoy this year," he said angrily."I mean it. If he makes fun of my family again, I'll have his head-"

Ron made a violent gesture.

"Ron," said Hermione warningly, pointing at Professor Lupin."Watch out."

But Professor Lupin was still fast asleep.

The train continued north, and the rain grew heavier. The windows were now a thick, sticky gray, and it was getting darker until the lights in the corridor and the luggage racks came on. The train swayed, the rain was pounding on the windows, the wind was howling, but Professor Lupin slept soundly.

"We're probably about to arrive." said Ron.

As soon as he finished speaking, the train slowed down.

"That's great." said Ron, standing up and walking cautiously around Professor Lupin to see what was going on. "I'm starving. I want to eat a big meal."

"Not yet." Bangs said, leaning against the back of his chair.

"We can't have arrived so soon." said Hermione, looking at her watch.

"Then why did you stop?" said Ron blankly.

The train slowed down. The sound of the wheels became softer, and the sound of the wind and rain outside the window became louder.

The train jerked to a halt. There was a loud thud in the distance, indicating that luggage had fallen off the rack. Then, all the lights suddenly went out, and they were thrown into complete darkness.

"What happened?" Ron's voice came from behind Harry.

" Flashing light." Bangs read.

"Ouch, Ron, that's my foot.”said Hermione, rubbing her trampled foot.

"I'm sorry." said Ron.

Harry followed the light from Bunce's wand back to his seat.

"Do you think the train broke down?"

"I don't know," said Ron.

The carriage door burst open and Neville fell inside.

"Hello, Neville," Harry pulled Neville to his feet by the dim light.

"Thank you, Harry, what happened?”asked Neville.

"I don't know, sit down-" said Harry.

There was a loud hissing and a yelp of pain as Neville sat on Crookshanks.

"I'll go ask the driver what's going on.”said Hermione, getting up.

"Nobody move." Bance said.

Then, wand raised, he moved to the carriage door, which swung open slowly.

Standing in front of Bangs was a cloaked monster that reached the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden under the hood. Bangs noticed something cold passing over him. He raised his wand at the monster and shot a blinding light at it. The monster was knocked back and floated away.

When Bunce returned to the carriage, he saw Professor Lupin supporting Harry, who had collapsed to the ground.

"Harry! Harry! Are you alright?"

Someone was slapping his face.

"Wh-what's wrong?" said Harry weakly, opening his eyes.

Ron and Hermione helped Harry back to his seat.

"Are you alright?" said Ron nervously.

"Nothing," said Harry."What happened? Where's the-monster? Who was screaming just now?"

"No one screamed." said Ron.

"But I heard screaming," said Harry stubbornly.

"Here you go, Harry," Bang Si distributed a lot of chocolate and said," Eat it. It's good for you.”

Harry took the chocolate but did not eat it.

"What was that just now?" He asked Bance.

"A dementor," said Professor Lupin."A dementor from Azkaban.”

Everyone stared at him.

"Hurry up and eat the chocolate. It's good for you.”He then said," I need to speak to the driver. I'm sorry."

He walked past Harry and disappeared into the corridor.

"You sure you're all right, Harry?" said Hermione anxiously.

"I don't understand what just happened.”said Harry, wiping the sweat from his face.

"I'll tell you after you eat the chocolate, Harry.”Bance said.

"You can tell me now.”said Harry, eating his chocolate.

"Er-the guy-the dementor-was standing in the doorway, looking around. I mean, I think it did, I couldn't see its face-and you-you-"

"I think you're scared or something," said Ron fearfully."You went stiff, fell out of your seat, started twitching-"

"Bunce fired a blinding beam of light at the dementor with his wand, and he floated away.”Hermione added.

"Terrifying," said Neville, in a voice higher than usual."Did you feel cold when that thing was standing in the doorway?”

"I feel weird," said Ron, twisting his shoulders uncomfortably."Like I'm never going to be happy again."

"I don't feel anything, except for a little chill.”Bance said.

"Did any of you-fall off your seats?”said Harry awkwardly.

"No, I haven't." said Ron, looking anxiously at Harry.

Professor Lupin had returned. When he entered, he paused for a moment, looked around, smiled, and said,"I'm glad you all ate chocolate.”

"We'll be at Hogwarts in ten minutes.”said Professor Lupin."How are you, Harry?”

"Alright." Harry muttered sheepishly.

"What's your name?" asked Professor Lupin, looking at Bunce.

"Bunce Foley, Professor," Bangs replied.

"You're strong, second years can't fight off dementors on their own.”said Professor Lupin admiringly.

"Thank you." Bance said.

They didn't talk much for the rest of the journey. At last, the train stopped at Hogwarts station, and there was a great deal of fuss when they got off: Owls hooted, cats meowed, and Neville's pet toad croaked under his hat. The little platform was frozen and the cold rain was pouring down.

"First years, come here!" A familiar voice called out. Bunce, Harry, Ron, and Hermione turned around to see Hagrid's massive figure at the other end of the platform. He was waving at the panic-stricken new students to take them on the traditional trip across the lake.

"Are the four of you alright?" Hagrid shouted over the heads. They waved at them, but had no chance to speak to him, because the people around them were pushing them along the platform. Bangs and the others followed the rest of the school students onto a rough, muddy road. There were at least a hundred carriages waiting for the rest of the students, each drawn by invisible horses.

There was a faint smell of mold and straw in the carriage. Ron and Hermione had been watching Harry furtively, as though afraid he would break down again.

The carriage rolled along, and ahead of it was a pair of magnificent cast doors, flanked by stone pillars topped by winged boars, and Bunce noticed two tall, hooded dementors standing guard on either side. The carriage picked up speed up the long slope until it reached the castle, where Hermione leaned out of the window to look. At last, the carriage came to a wobbly stop and Bunce got out.

A drawling voice rang out as Harry got out of the car.

"You fainted, Potter? Was Longbottom telling the truth? Did you really faint?"

said Malfoy smugly, blocking the way to the castle.

"What about you? Malfoy, I heard you almost peed your pants, you're not shy for a big guy like you.”Bance said.

"Did you pass out too, Foley? Did that scary old man scare you?”said Malfoy viciously.

"Obviously, I'm different from someone who peed his pants. I drove that thing away.”Bangs said with a smile.

"You-" said Malfoy, his pale face flushed.

"Did something happen?" A gentle voice asked. Professor Lupin had just alighted from a carriage behind them.

Malfoy gave Professor Lupin a normal look, taking in the patches on his robes and the tattered trunk. He said sarcastically,""Oh, no-er-Professor.”Then he left, grinning at Crabbe and Goyle.

Bunce and the others followed the crowd toward the Great Hall, and before they could see the magical ceiling-which was dark and gloomy today-a voice called,"Potter! Foley! Granger! I want to see the three of you."

Bang Si and the others turned around, surprised. Professor McGonagall, the head of Gryffindor House, was calling them over the crowd. She looked like a very stern witch, her hair tightly combed; A pair of square-shaped glasses were placed on top of a pair of sharp eyes.

"Don't look so glum, Potter-I'm just going to have a few words with you in my office.”She told them. "Weasley, over there,"

Ron stared as Professor McGonagall led Bunce and the others out of the crowd; The three of them accompanied her through the entrance hall, up the marble staircase, and down the corridor.

They entered her office, a small room with a welcoming fire in the fireplace, and Professor McGonagall motioned them to sit down at once. She sat behind the table and suddenly said,""Professor Lupin sent an owl first to explain what happened on the train.”

"Mr. Foley, although you have successfully repelled the dementors, I must tell you that what you did was very reckless and irrational. I hope it won't happen again.”said Professor McGonagall, looking at Bunce.

"Got it, Professor." Bangs replied calmly.

"Besides, Professor Lupin said you were sick, Harry.”said Professor McGonagall, looking at Harry.

Before Harry could answer, there was a soft knock on the door and Madam Pomfrey, the head nurse, hurried in.

"I'm fine," said Harry, blushing."I don't need any-"

"Oh, it's you again?" said Madam Pomfrey, completely ignoring him, bending down to get a closer look. "I suppose you've done something dangerous again?”

"It's a dementor, Poppy," said Professor McGonagall.

They exchanged an inconspicuous look, and Madam Pomfrey gave a disapproving cackle.

"Let the dementors station themselves around the school," she muttered, pushing Harry's hair aside and stroking his forehead. "He won't be the first to collapse. Yes, he was cold and wet. They're horrible things, the effect they have on people who can't handle them-"

"I'm not someone who can't be touched!”said Harry angrily.

"Of course not." said Madam Pomfrey absentmindedly, feeling Harry's pulse.

"What does he need?" said Madam Pomfrey briskly. Should he spend the night in the hospital?”

"I'm fine!" said Harry excitedly, jumping to his feet.

"Well, he should at least eat some chocolate or something.”said Madam Pomfrey, trying to look into Harry's eyes. "I've had some already," said Harry."Bunce gave me some and he gave them to everyone.”

"Is that so?" said Madam Pomfrey, looking approvingly at Bunce.

"Are you sure you're all right, Potter?”said Professor McGonagall sharply.

"Definitely." said Harry.

"Very well. Please wait outside with Mr. Foley. Miss Granger and I will have a word about her schedule, and then we can go to dinner together.”said Professor McGonagall.

Bunce, Harry, and Madam Pomfrey went out into the corridor together, and Madam Pomfrey left them and went back into the side hall, muttering to herself as she went. They had only waited a few minutes when Hermione appeared, looking very happy about something, and behind her was Professor McGonagall, and the four of them walked down the stairs into the Great Hall.

The Great Hall was a sea of pointed black hats; Every long table was filled with students, their faces lit by thousands of candles that hovered in the air above them. Professor Flitwick, a small, white-haired wizard, was walking out of the Great Hall with an old hat and a three-legged stool.

"Oh," said Hermione quietly,"we missed the Sorting.”

Many new students at Hogwarts wore the Sorting Hat to decide which House they should attend, which called out the House they were most suited for (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin). Professor McGonagall walked slowly toward her empty seat at the staff table, while Bunce and the others walked as quietly as they could in the opposite direction, toward the Gryffindor table. People turned to look at them as they walked along the back of the Great Hall, a few pointing.

As soon as they sat down next to Ron, he asked,"Why did I ask you to go just now?”

Harry began to explain in a low voice, but stopped when the headmaster stood up to speak.

Professor Dumbledore was old, but he always gave the impression that he was full of energy. His hair and beard were several feet long, he wore half-round glasses, and his nose was sharply hooked. He was often said to be the greatest wizard alive.

"Welcome!" said Professor Dumbledore, his beard gleaming in the candlelight. I have a few words to say to you all, and one of them is very serious, and I thought it would be better to clear it up before you get confused by this delicious meal."

Dumbledore cleared his throat and said,"You must have known after they searched the Hogwarts Express. Our school is currently hosting a number of dementors from Azkaban who are here on Ministry business.”

He paused for a moment before continuing," They are stationed at all the entrances to the school grounds. While they are here, I must make it clear that no one is allowed to leave the school without permission. Dementors should not be deceived by tricks or disguises-not even Cloaks of Invisibility.”he added impassively, and Harry and Ron looked at each other. "Dementors don't know what pleas or excuses are. Therefore I warn each and every one of you: Don't give them any excuse to hurt you. I'm counting on the prefects, and our new Head of the Boy and Girl Union, to make sure that no student comes into conflict with the dementors.”

Percy, who was sitting only a few seats away from Bunce, puffed out his chest again and looked around impressively. Dumbledore paused again; he looked very seriously around the Hall. No one moved, no one made a sound.

"On a happier note," he continued,"I am pleased to welcome two new teachers to our team this year.

"The first is Professor Lupin, who has generously agreed to fill the gap in Defense Against the Dark Arts.”

There was a scattered, unenthusiastic applause. Only the students who had seen him on the train clapped loudly. Professor Lupin looked particularly shabby in the middle of all the well-dressed teachers.

"Look at Snape!" Ron whispered.

Snape, the Potions teacher, was staring resentfully at Professor Lupin all the way along the long staff table. Everyone knew that Professor Snape had always wanted to be a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

"As for our second teacher," said Dumbledore, after the half-hearted applause for Professor Lupin had died away,"well, I regret to inform you that our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Professor Kettleburn, retired at the end of last year to spend more time with his remaining rascals. However, I am happy to say that it is none other than Rubeus Hagrid, who has agreed to take on the teaching role in addition to his gamekeeper role.”

Harry, Ron, and Hermione stared at each other, stunned. Then they joined in the applause, which was particularly loud at the Gryffindor table. Bunce watched Hagrid flush and stare at his large hands, his smile hidden in his messy black beard.

"We should have known!" roared Ron, thumping the table."Who else would want us to get a biting book?”

When Professor Dumbledore began to speak again, they saw Hagrid wiping his eyes on the tablecloth.

" Well, I think that's all the important stuff," said Dumbledore." Let's eat.”

The golden plates and goblets in front of them were suddenly filled with food and drink. It was a sumptuous meal; the Great Hall echoed with laughter and the clatter of knives and forks. When the last bit of pumpkin pie had disappeared from the golden plate, Dumbledore had said that they would only get their chance if everyone went to bed.

"Congratulations, Hagrid!" Hermione shrieked as they made their way to the teachers 'table.

"It's all thanks to you guys." said Hagrid, looking up at them and wiping his glowing face with a napkin. "You can't trust a great man, Dumbledore... Professor Kettleburn said he'd had enough and came straight to me... That's what I've always wanted."

"Listen, Hagrid, remember, don't get on the hippogriff at the start, unless you want to lose your job.”Bunce whispered in Hagrid's ear.

"What-why?" said Hagrid in surprise.

But Bunce and the others had been motioned away by Professor McGonagall.

Bunce and the rest of the Gryffindors crowded up the marble staircase, tired now, and had more corridors and stairs to climb to the hidden entrance to Gryffindor Tower. A large portrait of the Fat Lady in pink asked them,"Passwords?"

"Success, success!" Percy shouted from behind the crowd."The new password is Lucky Star!”

"Oh, no." said Neville Longbottom sadly. He could never remember the password.

The girls and boys passed through the portrait hole, across the common room, and each headed for their own staircase. When they reached the familiar six-bed dormitory, Bangs looked around and felt that he was finally home.
