The door opened immediately. A tall, black-haired witch in a green robe stood in front of the door. She looked serious, and Bangs felt that this person was not easy to deal with.
"First year, Professor McGonagall.”said Hagrid.
"Thank you, Hagrid. Leave it to me to pick you up."
She pulled the door wide open. The entrance hall was big enough to fit three Leaky Cauldrons inside. Like ancient European castles, the stone walls were surrounded by burning torches. The ceiling was so high that it was almost impossible to see the top. There was a luxurious marble staircase leading upstairs.
They followed Professor McGonagall along the stone floor. Bangs heard the buzzing of hundreds of voices from a side door. The rest of the school must have arrived already-but Professor McGonagall had led the first years into a small empty room at the other end of the hall. Everyone rushed in and squeezed together, nervously and carefully watching everything around them.
"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall."The opening feast is about to begin, but before you take your seats in the dining hall, I want you all to confirm which House you are admitted to. This is an important ceremony, because while you are here, the House will be like your home at Hogwarts. You will attend classes with the rest of the House, live in the House dormitories together, and spend your free time together in the House common room.”
"The names of the four academies are: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each school had its own glorious history, and each had produced outstanding wizards and witches. During your time at Hogwarts, your outstanding performance will earn your House extra points, while any violation will result in your House losing points. At the end of the year, the house with the highest score would win the House Cup, which was a very high honor. I hope that no matter which academy you are assigned to, you will be able to bring glory to the academy.”
"In a few minutes, the Sorting Ceremony will be held in front of the entire school. I suggest that you tidy yourselves up while you wait.”
Her eyes wandered between Neville's cloak, which was tied beneath his left ear, and the grubby patch on Ron's nose. Bunce also noticed Harry nervously trying to smooth his hair.
"I'll come and pick you up when everything is ready.”said Professor McGonagall.”
She left the room. Bunce looked relieved to see everyone.
Then Harry asked Ron,"How can they be so sure of which House we're going to?”
"I guess, always passing a test. Fred said it would hurt us badly, but I think he was joking.”
"Your brother is indeed joking. It's not that exaggerated. He's just wearing a hat.”Bangs advised.
"Really?" said Harry incredulously.
"More real than pearls. You have to believe me.”Bangs said with certainty.
At that moment, twenty or so ghosts suddenly appeared on the wall behind them. These pearl-white, translucent specters glided across the room, whispering to each other, paying little attention to the first years. They seemed to be arguing. A chubby spirit cultivator said,""He should be forgiven, he should be forgotten, I say, we should give him another chance-"
"Haven't we given Peeves enough chances, my good Friar? But he gave us all ugly nicknames. He's not even a ghost, you know-I say, what are you doing here?”
A ghost in a ruffled tights had suddenly spotted the first year.
"Waiting for Professor McGonagall to pick us up.”Bangs said.
"Freshmen! Aren't you afraid of us? I think he's probably preparing to take the test. "The plump cultivator smiled at them.
Some students nodded silently.
"I hope you get Hufflepuff!”The monk said," I used to study in that academy.”
"Let's move forward now," said a squeaky voice."The Sorting is about to begin.”
Professor McGonagall had returned. The ghosts drifted away in a single file through the opposite wall.
"Now, form a single line," Professor McGonagall said to the first years."Follow me."”
Harry stood behind Ron, Bunce right behind him. They left the room, crossed the hall, and entered the luxurious dining room through a double door at the back.
Bunce had never imagined that there could be such a wonderful and magnificent place. The rest of the House had already gathered around four long tables, and thousands of candles were floating in the air above them, illuminating the entire dining room. Four tables were lined with glittering plates and goblets. There was another long table on the table at the head of the dining hall, which was the seat for the teachers. Professor McGonagall took the first years over there and lined them up facing the class, the teachers behind them. The candlelight flickered, and the hundreds of faces staring at them were like pale lanterns. The specters were also among the students, flashing with silver light. Bunce looked up to avoid their eyes and saw the stars twinkling on the velvety black ceiling. He heard Hermione whisper,"It's been enchanted. It looks like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts: A History.”
It was hard to believe that there was really a ceiling up there, and it was also hard to believe that the roof of the restaurant was not open-air.
Professor McGonagall placed a three-legged stool gently in front of the first years, and Bunce looked away. Professor McGonagall placed another pointed wizard's hat on the stool. The hat was patched, worn, and filthy.
The restaurant was silent. Then the hat twisted. A wide slit opened at the brim like a mouth and the hat began to sing:
You may not think me pretty,
But never judge a book by its cover,
If you can find a prettier hat than mine,
I can eat myself.
You can make your bowler hats black and glossy,
Let your high hats be smooth and stiff,
I'm the Hogwarts test hat,
Of course it's better than your hat.
Nothing in your heads hides from the golden eyes of the hat,
Try it on, and I'll tell you,
Which academy should you be assigned to?
You may belong in Gryffindor,
There is courage buried in the bottom of my heart.
Their courage, boldness, and forthrightness,
To make Granfindor stand out;
You may belong to Hufflepuff,
The people there are upright and loyal,
The Hufflepuffs were stoic and honest,
Unafraid of hard labor;
If you are wise,
Maybe into the wise old Ravenclaw,
Those who are wise and learned,
They would always meet their comrades there.
Maybe you'll go to Slytherin,
Maybe you'll make true friends here,
However, those cunning and sinister people would do anything to stop them.
To achieve their goal.
Put me on! Don't be afraid!
Don't panic!
In my hand (though I don't have a hand)
You're absolutely safe
Because I'm a thinking hat!
When the hat had finished, there was a thunderous round of applause. The hat bowed to each of the four tables and then stopped moving.
"So, we just need to wear this hat.”Ron whispered to Harry."I'm going to kill Fred, he's talking about fighting giants.”
Harry smiled faintly at Bunce.
Professor McGonagall took a few steps forward, a roll of parchment in her hand.
"Whomever I call now will put on their hat and sit on a stool for the sorting.”She said,"Hannah Abbott!"
A ruddy-faced little girl with two golden braids stumbled out of the line and put on a hat that covered her eyes. She sat down. A moment of pause.
"Hufflepuff!" shouted the hat.
The people at the table on the right clapped and cheered for Hannah to sit at their table. Bangs saw the fat friar and waved happily at her.
"Susan Bones!"
"Hufflepuff!" shouted the hat again. Susan quickly ran to Hannah and sat down.
"Terry Burt!"
"Ravenclaw!"
This time, the second table on the left clapped. When Tyrell joined them, several Ravenclaws stood up to shake his hand.
Mandy Bloch was assigned to Ravenclaw, Lavender Brown became Gryffindor's first student, and there was an immediate cheer at the farthest left table, where Bunce saw Ron's twin brothers hissing.
Then Millicent Bursted became a new Slytherin. Admittedly, the Slytherins did not look likable.
"Justin Finch-Fletchley!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Hermione Granger!"
Hermione had almost run to her stool and pulled her hat back on her head.
"Gryffindor!" shouted the hat. Lorne snorted.
When the name of Neville Longbottom, the boy who kept losing his toads, was called out, he tripped over the path of his stool. It took the hat a long time to make up its mind about Neville. Neville ran off with it when the hat finally called out "Gryffindor," and was finally forced to trot back to Professor McGonagall amid a roar of laughter.
When Malfoy's name was called, Malfoy strode forward, and as soon as his hat touched his head, he shrieked,"Slytherin!"
Malfoy went off to join his friends Crabbe and Goyle, looking pleased with himself.
At this time, there were not many people left.
"Bunce Foley!"
Bangs calmly walked over, picked up his hat, and put it on.
" Yes," he heard a soft voice in his ear." You have the heart to obtain great power, and you also have the desire to prove yourself. You also have enough courage and a good brain. It's very difficult to give you a division."
"Then let's go to Gryffindor, I think it's a good place.”Bance whispered.
"Have you really decided? All right, Gryffindor!"
When Bunce heard the hat shout the name across the room, he took it off and walked calmly over to the Gryffindor table. The Weasley twins stood up happily to shake hands with him and sat down beside them.
"Harry Potter!"
"Gryffindor!"
The whole Gryffindor table cheered loudly, and the twins shouted,"We've got Potter! We've got Potter!" Harry sat down next to Bunce, who thought,'This is the star effect.'
Bunce sat down and looked down at the podium, where Albus Dumbledore sat in a large golden chair. Bunce recognized his face at once, having seen it on the wizard's card of the Chocolate Frog on the train. Besides, Dumbledore's silver hair was the only thing in the whole room that shone as brightly as the ghosts.
Now, there were only three people left waiting to be assigned. Lisa Dupin was a new Ravenclaw. Then it was Ron's turn. His face turned green. In the blink of an eye, the hat shouted,"Gryffindor!"
Bunce joined the rest in clapping as Ron collapsed into the seat next to Harry.
"Very good, Ron, very good!" said Percy Weasley exaggeratedly over several heads. Brace Zabini, the last remaining person, was assigned to Slytherin. Professor McGonagall rolled up the parchment, picked up the Sorting Hat, and left.
Albus Dumbledore stood up. He beamed at the students and extended his arms to them, as if nothing pleased him more than to see them all in one place.
"Welcome!" he said."Welcome to Hogwarts, everyone! Before the banquet begins, I would like to say a few words. That was, idiot! Crying! Residue! Twist!"
"Thank you, everyone!"
He sat down again. Everyone applauded and cheered. Bangs knew that this was a famous quote from Old Deng.
"Don't you think he's-a bit off?”Harry asked Bunce hesitantly.
"Crazy? You'll understand later. Eat something. How about some ham?”Bangs said as he chewed on his ham.
"It looks really good." said the ghost in the ruff sadly, watching Harry cut the steak.
"Aren't you going to try some?" said Harry childishly.
"He's already dead. How can we eat him?" Bangs said as he ate the mashed potatoes.
"He's right, I haven't eaten for 400 years. I don't need to eat them, and I can't eat them either. However, of course, I miss their delicious food. I think I haven't introduced myself yet. Sir Nicholas of Mimsy Poppington, resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower.”
"I know who you are!" said Ron suddenly."My brothers told me about you-you're Nearly Headless Nick!”
"I think I prefer Sir Nicholas, Mimsy.”Spectre looked a little ill at ease, but Seamus-8226 with his light brown hair; Finnigan interjected,
"Nearly Headless? How did you almost lose your head?"
Sir Nicholas looked very angry. It seemed that he did not want to talk about it.
"Just like this." he snapped. He grabbed his left ear and pulled it down, and his head wobbled off his neck and onto his shoulder as if it were connected by a chain. It seemed that someone had not chopped off his head completely. Nearly Headless Nick was delighted to see their stunned expressions. He gently bounced his head back to his neck, cleared his throat, and said,"All right, new Gryffindors! I hope you can help us win the House Cup this year, okay? Gryffindor had never gone so long without winning a prize. Slytherin had won six championships in a row, and the Bloody Baron was the last straw-he was Slytherin's ghost.”
"Why is he covered in blood?”Seamus asked with great interest.
"I never asked." said Nearly Headless Nick stiffly.
When everyone was full, the rest of the food disappeared from their plates. The plate was as smooth as before. After a while, Pudding came up. There were all sorts of flavors of ice cream, such as apple pie, syrup pie, chocolate pancakes, fried jam donuts, wine pudding, jelly, and so on.
Bangs took a chocolate chip waffle, and the conversation turned to their families.
"I'm half and half." said Seamus."Dad's a Muggle, and Mum didn't tell Dad she was a witch until after she got married. It scared him quite a bit."
Everyone laughed.
"What about you, Neville?" asked Ron.
"Oh, I was brought up by Granny, she's a witch.”said Neville."But my family's been treating me like a Muggle for years. My Uncle Algie was always trying to force me to show off my magic when no one was looking-he once pushed me off the Black Lake pier and almost drowned me-but nothing happened. One day, when I was eight, my Uncle Algie came over for tea. He hung me by my ankles from the upstairs window, just as my Aunt Aine handed him a piece of egg white cake. He slipped and didn't hold me firmly. I bounced myself up-over the garden and onto the road. They were overjoyed. Aunty Annie was so happy that she started crying. If only you could have seen the look on their faces when I received the admission letter. You see, they thought I didn't have enough magic power to enter this school. My Uncle Algie was so happy that he bought me a toad.”
Percy Weasley and Hermione, on the other hand, were discussing their homework ("I wish I'd cut to the chase, there's so much to learn, and I'm particularly interested in Transfiguration. You know, turning one thing into another, of course, should be very difficult-""You should start with small things, like turning matches into needles or something-"
At last, Pudding disappeared, and Professor Dumbledore stood up again. The dining room returned to silence.
"Oh, now that everyone has eaten and drunk enough, I want to say a few more words to everyone. At the beginning of the term, I would like to give you a few points of note.”
"Attention, first years. The woods on campus are off-limits to all students. Some of our senior students should also remember this point.”
Dumbledore's shining eyes swept over the Weasley twins.
"And Mr. Filch, the caretaker, has asked me to remind everyone not to do magic in the corridors between lessons.”
"The Quidditch players will be reviewed in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing on House teams should contact Madam Hooch.”
"Finally, I must tell you that those who do not wish to suffer a painful death should not enter the corridor on the right of the fourth floor.”
Harry burst out laughing, but there were only a few who were laughing.
"You don't think he's serious, do you?”said Harry, looking at Bunce.
"Don't use your life as a bet, it's not worth it.”Bangs said something else that made no sense.
"Now, before we all go to bed, let's sing the school song!”Dumbledore said loudly. Bangs noticed that the smiles of the other teachers seemed to have frozen.
Dumbledore flicked his wand, and a long golden ribbon flew out of it, twisting like a snake over the high dining table to form lines of text.
"Everyone chooses the tune they like.”said Dumbledore."Ready, sing!”
And so the whole school burst into song:
Hogwarts, Hogwarts
Ask us for knowledge,
Whether we're bald old men
Or a child with a broken knee,
Our minds can accept
Something interesting.
For now our heads are empty and full of air,
Dead flies and trifles,
Teach us something valuable,
Give us back what we have forgotten,
As long as you do your best, leave the rest to us.
We'll study hard until we're turned into dung.
Everyone finished singing the school song. Only the Weasley twins continued to sing along to the slow tune of the Funeral March. Dumbledore directed the last few bars of the song for both of them with his wand, and when they had finished, he clapped loudest.
"Music," he said, wiping his eyes,"is more charming than anything we do here! It was time for bed. Everyone, go back to the dormitory."
The Gryffindor first years followed Percy through the noisy crowd, out of the dining room, and up the marble staircase. Bunce was feeling a little tired; the portraits in the corridors were whispering and pointing as they passed, and he wasn't even surprised or surprised when Percy led them twice through doors hidden behind sliding boards and draping curtains. They yawned and trudged up many more stairs. Bangs was wondering how much longer they had to walk when the people ahead suddenly stopped.
In front of them, a bundle of walking sticks was floating in the air, and Percy was only a step away from the people behind him, so they all threw themselves at him.
"It's Peeves," Percy whispered to the first years."A ghost who likes pranks.”He raised his voice again.”
He was answered by a loud, piercing, deflated puff.
"Do you want me to go find the Bloody Baron?”
There was a pop, and out of nowhere, a dwarf with evil black eyes and a wide mouth floated in the air, his legs crossed, his hands clutching the bundle of sticks.
"Hehehe!" He chuckled darkly."So it's the annoying first-year kid! This is so fun!"
He lunged at them. The freshmen were stunned.
"Go away, Peeves, or I'll tell the Bloodman Baron I'm not kidding!”yelled Percy.
Peeves stuck out his tongue and was gone. The cane hit Neville squarely on the head. They heard him lift off, his armor clattering as he flew.
"You should be on guard against Peeves.”said Percy, leading the way."Bloody Baron's the only one who can stop him, he won't even listen to us prefects. We're here."
There was a portrait hanging at the end of the corridor. In the portrait, there was a very rich woman wearing a pink dress.
"Passwords?" she said.
"Dragon dregs." said Percy. The painting swayed forward, revealing a circular hole in the wall. After they had all crawled through the hole in the wall-Neville needed a hand-they found themselves in the Gryffindor common room. It was a comfortable circular room filled with soft armchairs.
Percy guided the girls through one door to their dormitories, then the boys through another. At the top of a spiral staircase-they were obviously in a tower-they found their own bunks at last: Six beds with four awls, draped with dark red blue velvet curtains. Their boxes had already been sent up. They were exhausted and did not want to talk anymore. One by one, they changed into their pajamas and fell asleep.
