Bunce woke up the next morning to a dreary atmosphere of the end of a holiday. The rain was still pattering against the window as he pulled on his Muggle clothes.
She had just reached the corner when she saw Mrs. Weasley appear suddenly at the foot of the stairs, looking distraught.
"Arthur!" she called upstairs. Urgent message from the Ministry!"
Mr. Weasley was seen thundering past them and out of sight, Bunce noticing that he was wearing his robes inside out. As he entered the kitchen, he saw Mrs. Weasley rummaging anxiously in a drawer-"I remember there's a quill here!”Mr. Weasley was leaning over the fire, talking-
Amos Diggory's head hung in the flames like an enormous bearded egg. It was saying something fast, and it was flying around him, tongues of fire licking its ears, but it did nothing to stop it.
"Muggles living nearby heard banging and shouting, and they went to call-what did you call them again-Jinchak. Arthur, you've got to go lie down-"
"Here you go!" said Mrs. Weasley breathlessly, thrusting a piece of parchment, a bottle of ink, and a crumpled quill into Mr. Weasley's hand.
"I'm glad I heard about it," said Mr. Diggory's head."I had to get to the office early because I had to send two owls, and I found the whole Office for the Misuse of Magic out there-if Rita 8226; Skeeter's making a big deal out of it, Arthur-"
"Mad-Eye say what happened?”said Mr. Weasley, unscrewed the cap of his ink bottle, filled his quill, and prepared to take notes.
Mr. Diggory's head rolled. "He said he heard someone break into his yard. He said he was sneaking toward the house when he was ambushed by his dustbin.”
"It made a terrible noise and blew rubbish everywhere, that's all I know.”said Mr. Diggory."Apparently, one of the dumpsters was still spewing rubbish when Kincha arrived-"
Mr. Weasley moaned. "Where is the person who broke into the courtyard?"
"Arthur, you know Mad-Eye.”said Mr. Diggory's head, rolling his eyes again. Perhaps it was a stray cat that had suffered a defeat outside, wandering aimlessly with potato skins hanging from its body. But Mad-Eye's in trouble if the people in the Office for the Misuse of Magic catch him-think of his record-let's let him off if it's not a serious crime and your department is responsible for it-what's the penalty for blowing up a dustbin?”
"Probably a warning." said Mr. Weasley, taking notes quickly."Mad-Eye didn't use a wand, did he? He didn't actually attack anyone, right?”
"I bet he jumped out of bed and looked out of the window and ruined everything he saw.”said Mr. Diggory."But they'll have a hard time proving it, because there were no casualties.”
"All right, I'll be on my way," said Mr. Weasley, stuffing the parchment into his pocket and dashing out of the kitchen again.
Mr. Diggory looked around at Mrs. Weasley.
"I'm very sorry, Molly," he said quietly."I'm sorry to bother you so early, but only Arthur can absolve Mad-Eye from punishment, and Mad-Eye was supposed to start a new job today. I really don't understand why he chose last night."
"Never mind, Amos," said Mrs. Weasley."Would you like a slice of bread or something before you go?”
"Oh, alright." said Mr. Diggory.
Mrs. Weasley took a piece of buttered bread from the pile on the table, clamped it in a pair of tongs, and put it into Mr. Diggory's mouth.
"Thank you." he mumbled, and then disappeared with a soft pop.
"I've got to get going-I wish you all the best this term, boys.”said Mr. Weasley, draping a cloak over his shoulders and preparing to Disapparate. "Molly, will you be all right to take the children to King's Cross?”
"Of course not," she said."You take care of Mad-Eye, we'll be fine.”
As soon as Mr. Weasley disappeared, Bill and Charlie entered the kitchen.
"Someone mentioned Mad-Eye?" Bill asked."What did he do now?”
"He said someone tried to break into his yard last night.”said Mrs. Weasley.
"Mad-Eye Moody?" said George thoughtfully."That lunatic-"
"Your father spoke highly of Mad-Eye Moody.”said Mrs. Weasley sharply.
"Yeah, Dad collected plugs too, didn't he?”said Fred, when Mrs. Weasley had left the room."They're the same kind of people."
"Moody was a great wizard back in the day, you know.”Bill said.
"And he's an old friend of Dumbledore's, remember?”Charlie said.
"Dumbledore's not what you'd call normal, is he?”said Fred."I mean, I know he's a genius, he's amazing."
"Who's Mad-Eye?" asked Harry.
"He's retired now. He used to work at the Ministry," said Charlie."I met him once. Dad took me there when we worked together. He was an Auror-the best of the best at catching Dark wizards.”
"He filled more than half the cells in Azkaban. But he's made a lot of enemies, mainly the relatives of those he's caught, and I hear he's become more and more suspicious as he gets older, doesn't trust anyone, sees dark wizards everywhere he goes.”Bill added.
Bill and Charlie decided to see them off at King's Cross, and Percy apologized repeatedly that he was too busy.
"There's no reason for me to take leave at this time," he told them."Mr. Crouch is starting to count on me for a lot of things.”
"Yeah, you know what, Percy?”said George seriously."I suppose he'll know your name soon enough.”
Mrs. Weasley plucked up her courage, called the village post office, and booked three regular Muggle cabs to take them to London.
"Arthur was going to borrow the Ministry's car to take us," whispered Mrs. Weasley, who was standing in the pouring yard watching the taxi driver load seven heavy Hogwarts trunks into the car."But the Ministry couldn't spare any-oh dear, they're not happy not to see it, are they?”
What Bunce, Harry, and Hermione did not tell Mrs. Weasley was that Muggle taxi drivers rarely carried restless owls, and Piglet was squealing so loudly that it was deafening. Not to mention the fact that Fred's trunk had suddenly sprung open, and many of Dr. Phillip's auto-ignition, water-blooming fireworks had exploded unexpectedly, causing the trunk driver to scream, and Crookshanks added a touch of pain to his cries as he climbed up the man's thigh with his sharp claws.
It was a very uncomfortable ride, as they were all crammed into the back of the taxi with the trunks. Crookshanks took a long time to recover from the shock of the fireworks. Bunce, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all scratched to varying degrees as the car pulled into London. When they got off at King's Cross, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, even though it was raining harder than before. They carried their trunks through the busy street and into the station, drenched.
The Hogwarts Express was already there, a crimson steam locomotive that was belching smoke, through which many of the Hogwarts students and parents on the platform looked like dark shadows. Bunce, Harry, Ron, and Hermione began to look for seats, and soon they were carrying their luggage into a compartment on the train. Then they jumped back onto the platform and said goodbye to Mrs. Weasley, Bill, and Charlie.
"I may see all of you soon.”Charlie said with a smile as he hugged Ginny goodbye.
"Why?" said Fred eagerly.
"You'll find out," said Charlie."Don't ever tell Percy I mentioned it. You know, it's 'Top Secret Information, to be kept secret until the Ministry sees fit.'”
"Ah, I wish I could go back to Hogwarts this year.”said Bill, his hands in his pockets, his eyes looking at the train with a somewhat melancholy expression.
"Why?" said George impatiently.
" You're going to have a very interesting year," Bill said, his eyes shining with excitement." I might clean up and watch some of it."
"A part of what?" asked Ron.
"Wonderful stuff." Bance said.
"You know, don't you, tell me, Bunce-" said Hermione.
But then the whistle blew and Mrs. Weasley herded them to the carriage doors.
"Thanks for letting us stay, Mrs. Weasley.”she said to Mrs. Weasley, leaning out of the window as they boarded the train and closed the door.
"Yes, thank you for everything you've done for us, Mrs. Weasley.”said Harry.
"Thank you for a pleasant summer, I'm very grateful, Mrs. Weasley.”Bance said.
"Oh, I'd love to," said Mrs. Weasley."I'd like to invite you over for Christmas..." But I suppose you'd all rather stay at Hogwarts, because... For one reason or another."
"Mommy!" said Ron irritably."What was it that all three of you knew and kept it from us?”
"I reckon you'll find out tonight," said Mrs. Weasley, smiling."Don't tell them, Bunce, it's all the fun when the truth is revealed-I'll tell you, I'm glad they changed the rules-"
"What regulations?" asked Harry and Ron.
"What did Bangs promise?" asked Fred and George.
"I'm sure Professor Dumbledore will tell you. Now, behave, will you? Did you hear that, Fred? And you, George?"
The engine's pistons hissed loudly and the train started.
"Tell us what happened at Hogwarts!”Fred shouted out of the window."What did they change the rules?”
"Tell us, Bunce," George asked.
"I promised your parents that I wouldn't say anything. I'm sorry.”Bance said.
"Bagman's willing to tell us what's going on at Hogwarts," said Ron sullenly, sitting down."Remember, at the World Cup? But-"
"Shh!" said Hermione suddenly in a low voice, pressing a finger to her lips and pointing at the cubicle next to theirs. Bunce heard a familiar drawl drift through the open door.
"You know, Father really considered sending me to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts. He knew the principal of that school. Well, you know what he thinks of Dumbledore-he loves Mudbloods too much-Durmstrang doesn't even allow those lowlifes in. But my mother doesn't want me to go to school so far away. His father said Durmstrang's attitude toward the Dark Arts was much more reasonable than Hogwarts '. Durmstrang students are really learning the Dark Arts, unlike us, who're still learning some crappy Defense Arts."
Hermione got to her feet, tiptoed to the cubicle door, and pulled it gently shut to keep Malfoy's voice out.
"So he thinks Durmstrang suits him better?”said Hermione angrily."I wish he'd gone there sooner, then we wouldn't have to be disgusted.”
"Durmstrang is a school for wizardry?”asked Harry.
"Yeah," said Hermione."It's a horrible sight. According to the Assessment of Magical Education in Europe, the school placed a great deal of importance on the Dark Arts.”
"I think I've heard of it," said Ron vaguely. Which country?"
"You're bragging again, Ron," Bance said.
"Why?" asked Harry.
"Because no one except his students could possibly know where it was.”Bance said.
"Come on," said Ron, laughing."Durmstrang must be about the size of Hogwarts-how could you hide a whole castle?”
"But Hogwarts is hidden.”said Hermione."Everybody knows that... anyone who's read Hogwarts: A History should know.”
As the train continued to travel north, the rain became heavier and heavier. The sky was pitch-black, and the windows were covered in thick steam, so lanterns were lit in broad daylight. Crackle! Crackle! The lunch trolley rolled down the aisle, and Bunce bought some chocolate cake for everyone to enjoy.
In the afternoon, several of their friends came to visit them. Seamus 8226; Finnigan, Dean, Thomas, and Neville; Longbottom-a round-faced boy with a terrible memory who had been brought up by his redoubtable witch grandmother. Seamus was still wearing his Irishman badge, which seemed to be losing its magic. But it still shrieked weakly,"Troy! Marat! Mo Lan!"
Neville listened eagerly as everyone watched excitedly over the World Cup. (Bunce looked at them from his chair)
" Grandma doesn't want to go," he said pitifully." She won't buy a ticket. Ah, that sounds exciting.”
"Yeah," said Ron."Here, look at this, Neville."
He rummaged through the trunk in the luggage rack for a while and took out the Viktor 8226. Krum's figurine.
"Wow, that's great." said Neville enviously, as Ron placed Krum on his chubby palm.
"We saw him up there, very close," said Ron."We were sitting in the Top Box-"
"This is the only time in your life you'll ever be able to do this, Weasley.”said Malfoy from the ajar compartment door, Goyle and Crabbe standing beside him.
"When are you going to learn, Malfoy?”Bance said.
"You, let's go." Malfoy said angrily to Goyle and Crabbe when he caught sight of Bunce.
"Thank you, Bunce," said Harry.
"It's nothing." Bangs waved his hand.
For the rest of the journey, Quidditch was still being talked about, but Hermione only looked from Bunce, who was resting against the window, to Harry and the others, and muttered,"These boys!”。When they changed into their robes and got out of the car, there was a rumble of thunder in the air. Hermione wrapped Crookshanks in her cloak as they got off the train, their heads bowed and their eyes narrowed in the pouring rain. The rain fell fast and hard, as if buckets of cold water were being poured over their heads.
"Hello, Hagrid!" Harry shouted suddenly.
"Oh, hello, Harry!" said Hagrid gruffly, waving his hand.”
As usual, first years had to be ferried across the lake to Hogwarts Castle under Hagrid's guidance.
"Oh, I can't imagine crossing the lake in this weather.”said Hermione, trembling with excitement. At this moment, they moved along with the crowd and walked past the dark platform. Outside the station were hundreds of thestral-drawn carriages waiting for them. Bunce, Harry, Ron, and Hermione scrambled out of one of them. The door slammed shut, and a moment later, with a violent jolt, the long carriage set off, splashing as it went, down the path to Hogwarts Castle.
