Because of Malfoy, Bunce and Ron had to listen to Harry complain at least a few times a day. However, since Snape was the only class Gryffindor had with the Slytherins, it was not too hard for them to bear. At least at first. Then one day, they found a notice posted in the Gryffindor common room, which they all sighed at. Flying lessons were starting on Thursday-Gryffindors were going to have lessons with Slytherins.

"What bad luck," said Harry gloomily."Just as I expected. And make a fool of herself in front of Malfoy on a broom.”

"Trust me, you will do a great job.”Bangs said encouragingly.

"It's not certain if you'll make a fool of yourself.”said Ron sensibly."I know that Malfoy guy's always bragging about how good he's at Quidditch, but I bet he's just bluffing.”

"I really didn't expect you to say such intelligent words. I thought you didn't know anything other than eating and sleeping.”Bangs said sarcastically.

"You, are you saying that I'm a pig?”said Ron, blushing.

"No, we're good friends. Why would I say that? You're the one who's thinking the wrong thing.”Bangs said with a look of disbelief.

"What he said is the truth. You ate more than the two of us combined.”said Harry appropriately.

"You guys don't even let her eat. It's not like she's eating yours. Why are you feeling bad?”Ron muttered.

Everyone from a Wizarding family was talking about Quidditch. Ron had been toying with Dean for a football match; Thomas had a big fight. Ron didn't understand what was so exciting about a game with only one ball and no one flying. Bunce and Harry had both caught Ron poking Dean's poster of the West Ham football team, apparently trying to get the team to move.

Neville had never touched a broomstick in his life, because his grandmother never let him near one. Bunce thought privately that he was being very wise, and that Neville's ability to cause so many accidents, even when both his feet were on the ground, was surprising.

Hermione Granger was almost as nervous about flying as Neville. It was a skill you couldn't read about and remember-she had tried, but failed. She annoyed them at breakfast on Thursday morning by telling them about some flying instructions she'd read from a library reference book called Quidditch Origins. Neville was the only one who listened intently to every word she said, hoping to hear something useful that would help him sit firmly on his broom later. However, the others were very pleased when the postman arrived to interrupt Hermione's monologue.

"Thank God, I can finally eat breakfast in peace.”Bangs sighed as he ate his porridge.

At this, Hermione glared at Bunce, who would probably not live to see the sun tomorrow if looks could kill a man. (Is that possible?)

An owl had brought Neville a small package from his grandmother. Neville opened it excitedly and showed them a marble the size of a marble, which seemed to be filled with white smoke.

"This is a Memory Ball!" He explained to everyone,"Grandma knows I'm always forgetful-she'll tell you if you've forgotten something. Look, you hold it tight, like this, and if it turns red-oh "-he pulled a long face, for the Remembrall was suddenly glowing red-" you're forgetting something.”

"Hold on to it, Neville, watch out for Malfoy.”said Bunce, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

"Oh, I know." Neville replied casually, trying to remember what he had forgotten. Malfoy passed the Gryffindor table and reached out for Neville's Remembrall. Unfortunately, thanks to Bunce's warning, Neville held the ball so tightly that they were in a tug.

Harry and Ron leapt to their feet, for some reason wishing they could beat Malfoy up. Professor McGonagall, however, was always sharper than the other teachers when something was wrong, and she appeared in the blink of an eye.

"What happened?"

"Malfoy tried to take my Remembrall, Professor.”

"Five points from Slytherin," said Professor McGonagall grimly.

Malfoy scowled and hurried away.

At three-thirty that afternoon, Bunce, Harry, Ron, and the rest of the Gryffindors hurried down the steps to the front grounds for their first flying lesson. It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled slightly under their feet as they hurried down the slanted lawn to a flat lawn across the grounds. On the other side of the lawn was the forest. The dark trees in the distance swayed in the wind.

The Slytherins were already there, along with twenty broomsticks neatly arranged on the floor. Bunce had once heard the Weasley twins complain to Harry about the broomsticks at school.

Their teacher, Madam Hooch, had arrived. She had short gray hair and yellow eyes, like those of an eagle.

"Alright, what are you guys waiting for?”she snapped."Everyone stand by a broomstick. Hurry, hurry, hurry up."

Bunce glanced down at his broomstick, which was old and battered, with branches sticking out of it.

"Hold out your right hand, put it over the broom handle," Madam Hooch called from the front,"and say: 'Get up!'"

"Get up!" Everyone shouted.

Bunce's broom fell halfway through the jump, but Harry's was an instant success. As expected of the legendary broom master, Hermione Granger's broom only rolled on the ground, while Neville's did not move at all.

Then Madam Hooch showed them how to get on their brooms without sliding off their heads. She walked up and down the line, correcting their grip.

"Alright, when I whistle, kick off the ground with your feet.”said Madam Hooch."Hold the broom steady, rise a few feet, then lean forward slightly and fall straight back to the ground. On my whistle-three-two-"

Our fellow Neville, however, was so nervous of being left on the ground that he kicked hard and flew up before the whistle could reach Madam Hooch's lips.

"Come back, child!" shouted Madam Hooch, but Neville rose straight up, like a taut spring that had sprung-twelve feet-twenty feet. Bunce saw the faint outline of his frightened, white face staring down at the ground speeding away, saw him sliding down the side of his broom, panting, and then-

There was a crash, a loud crash, and Neville lay face-down in the grass, curled up in a ball. His broomstick was still rising higher and higher, then began to drift slowly toward the forest and disappear.

Madam Hooch bent over Neville, her face as white as Neville's.

"My wrist is broken." Bunce heard her say,"Now, boy-it's all right, you get up.”

She turned around and said to the other students in the class,

"I'll send this child to the hospital. None of you are allowed to move! Put your broomsticks back or you'll be thrown out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch.' Let's go, my dear."

Neville's face was streaked with tears as he limped away with Madam Hooch, clutching his wrist. Madam Hooch put her arm around him.

As soon as they were out of earshot, Malfoy burst into laughter.

"Did you see his face, that blockhead?”

The other Slytherins echoed.

"Shut up, Malfoy," snapped Parvati Patil.

"Oh, protecting Longbottom?" said Pansy Ferguson, an ugly Slytherin girl. "I didn't expect you to like chubby little teardrops, Patil.”

"Your appearance disgusts me, Alzheimer's.”Bangs said as he pretended to vomit.

The Gryffindors roared with laughter.”said Malfoy, rushing over and grabbing something from the grass."It's from that idiot Longbottom's grandmother.”

He held up the Remembrall. It was glistening in the sun.

"Give it here, Malfoy," Harry whispered. Everyone stopped talking and watched.

Malfoy grinned hideously.

"I'd like to put it somewhere for Longbottom to pick up-how about a tree?”

"Hand it over!" Harry shouted, but Malfoy had jumped onto his broom and taken off. He hadn't been boasting before-he was good at flying-but he was hovering at a height parallel to the top of a large tree, and he shouted,"Come and get it, Potter!"

Harry seized his broom.

"No!" Hermione Granger shouted."Madam Hooch told us not to move-you'll get us all into trouble.”

"Don't listen to her nonsense. Go, don't hesitate. Can't you see Malfoy's already taking the lead? If you want to punish someone, punish him. Moreover, you will have unexpected gains. Remember, no matter what happens, don't be disappointed.”Bance said.

"You're abetting him, you," said Hermione Granger angrily.

"What are you talking about? I'm doing this for his own good. Mind your own business, Big Incisor.”Bance said.

"Who did you say had big front teeth?" said Hermione, blushing.

"You know who I'm talking about." said Bunce, looking up at Harry as he flew.

"Give it to me," Harry shouted from the broom,"or I'll knock you off it."”

"Oh, really?" said Malfoy in a trembling voice.

Harry seemed to know what to do by nature; he leaned forward and gripped his broom tightly with both hands. And the broom shot like a javelin at Malfoy. Malfoy managed to dodge it; Harry spun around again and seized his broom firmly. A few people were clapping.

"There's no Crabbe or Goyle to escort you here, Malfoy.”Harry shouted.

Malfoy seemed to think the same.

"Here, let's see if you can catch it!" With a shout, he threw the glass ball high into the air and then dropped it quickly to the ground.

"Harry Potter!"

"In all my years at Hogwarts-never-"

Professor McGonagall was so shocked she could hardly speak, her eyes blazing with fury."-how dare you-you'll break your neck-"

"It's not his fault, Professor-"

"Shut up, Miss Patil-"

"But Malfoy-"

"Stop it, Mr. Weasley. Now, Potter, come with me."

"Don't worry, Harry, you'll be all right, trust me.”Bance said.

Professor McGonagall turned to look at Bunce, then strode off toward the castle.

"Will Harry be alright?" asked Parvati.

"I won't." Bangs replied.

"Will I really not be fired?" said Ron anxiously.

"Don't think too much. It's not that exaggerated.”Bangs comforted.

"If Harry gets expelled, it's all your fault.”said Hermione fiercely.

"I'd like to leave with Harry if I'm expelled.”Bangs said ruthlessly.

And then, as expected, Harry told them at dinner that he had been elected Seeker, and Malfoy came back with a sarcastic, off-the-cuff midnight duel. Even though Bangs tried to persuade them not to go, the two clowns still decided to give it a try.

"Don't play too late." Bangs instructed before going to bed.

"All right, Harry, we should go.”said Ron, putting on his robes.

"I hope you have a good time." Bangs said with a smile as he lay down.
