Because Dumbledore had convinced Harry not to look for the mirror, the precious Invisibility Cloak remained at the bottom of his trunk for the rest of the Christmas holidays.

"You see, Dumbledore's right, the mirror might drive you mad.”said Ron, when Harry told Bunce and Ron about the dreams.

Hermione, who had returned the day before school started, had a different opinion. She had mixed feelings, partly horrified by the fact that Harry had been out of bed and wandering the school for three nights in a row ("What if Filch caught you?”),On the one hand, he was deeply disappointed that Harry had not even found out who Nicolas Flamel was.

They had all but given up hope of finding Flamel in the library, though Harry was still convinced that he had seen the name somewhere. When term began, they resumed their habit of using their break time to browse through books, but Harry had less time than them, because Quidditch practice was back.

As usual, Harry headed straight for the Gryffindor common room after practice, where Bunce was leaning back on the sofa with his eyes closed, and Hermione and Ron were playing chess. Hermione only lost at chess, and Harry and Ron thought it would help her.

"Don't talk to me yet," said Ron, as Harry sat down next to him. You look terrible.“

"Is it because Snape's going to be the referee?”Bangs said with his eyes closed.

"How do you know?" asked Harry.

"Don't participate in the competition." said Hermione at once.

"Just say that you're sick." said Ron.

"Pretend to break your leg." suggested Hermione.

"I really broke my leg." said Ron.

"Don't listen to their nonsense. Don't worry, you'll be fine."”Bangs comforted.

Just then Neville fell headlong into the common room. No one could guess how he had managed to get out of the portrait hole, because his legs were stuck together. Harry and the others could tell at once that it had been Leg-Locking Charm. He must have hopped up the stairs like a rabbit into Gryffindor Castle.

Everyone laughed except Bunce and Hermione. Hermione stepped forward to undo the curse, and Neville's legs flew apart. He stood up, trembling.

"What happened?" said Hermione, ushering him over to sit with Harry.

"Malfoy," said Neville in a quavering voice."I ran into him outside the library. He said he'd been looking for someone to practice the spell.”

"Go to Professor McGonagall!" Hermione urged Neville."Sue him!”

Neville shook his head.

"I don't want any more trouble." he mumbled.

"You've got to stand up to him, Neville!”said Ron."He's always been a bully, there's no reason for us to give in to him and let him get away with it.”

"You don't have to tell me I'm too timid to be in Gryffindor, Malfoy already told me that.”sobbed Neville.

"You really are a coward, Neville, and you're a disgrace to Gryffindor.”Bangs said with his eyes wide open.

"How could you, Bunce, you should have comforted him.”said Hermione, looking at Neville's stumbling back.

"I'm telling the truth. Gryffindor's principle is to be brave and fearless. If a little Malfoy scared him, how could he face his own life?”Bance said.

"Well said, a Gryffindor should be strong, Neville is too weak.”said Ron.

"You guys." sighed Harry.

"Don't sigh. Didn't you have a hard time looking for Lemour? Here you go, Harry." said Bunce, handing Harry a card.

"Card?" said Ron, puzzled.

Harry looked at the famous wizard card.

"Dumbledore again, isn't this the one you asked me for on the train?”

He gasped, stared at the back of the card, then looked up at Ron and Hermione.

"I found him!" Harry whispered."I've got Flamel! I told you I'd seen that name somewhere before, on the train coming here-listen to this: 'Dumbledore's well-known contributions include: In 1945, he defeated the dark wizard Grindelwald and discovered twelve uses for dragon blood. He and his partner, Nicolas Flamel, were very effective in alchemy!'”

Hermione jumped to her feet. She hadn't been this excited since Bunce's first homework.

"Wait!" she said, and she flew upstairs to the girls 'dormitory. Before Harry and Ron could exchange a puzzled look, she was back again, clutching an enormous old book.

"I didn't think of looking here!”she whispered excitedly."I borrowed it from the library a few weeks ago, for pleasure.”

"Amusement?" Ron moaned, but Hermione told him to be quiet and look for something. She began to flip through the pages quickly, muttering to herself.

Finally, she found it.

"I know! I know!"

"Can we talk now?”said Ron crossly. Hermione ignored him.

"Nicolas Flamel," she said in a low, dramatic voice,"is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone!”

Her words did not achieve the desired effect.

"What stone?" asked Harry and Ron.

"Oh, what's going on? Don't you guys usually read books? Look-read this."

"Why didn't you come over to take a look?" asked Hermione, looking at Bunce.

"No need." Bance said.

"Do you understand?" said Hermione angrily when Harry and Ron had finished reading. "That big dog must be guarding Flamel's Stone! I daresay Flamel asked Dumbledore to keep it for him, because they're friends and he knows someone's after the Stone. That was why he had moved the Stone from Gringotts.”

"A stone can turn into gold and make you immortal!”said Harry."No wonder Snape's after it, too! Anyone would want it!"

"Don't jump to conclusions." Bance said.

"No wonder we couldn't find Flamel in A Study of Modern Wizarding Development," said Ron."He's six hundred and sixty-five, so he's not modern, is he?”

The next afternoon, Bunce, Ron, and Hermione found a spot in the stands next to Neville. Neville did not understand why everyone except Bunce looked so heavy and worried, or why they had all brought their wands onto the field.

"Remember, don't forget, it's 'legs stand stiff and stop death'. said Hermione, as Ron thrust his wand into his sleeve.

"I know," said Ron impatiently."Stop nagging.”

"I've never seen Snape look so glum.”he said to Hermione."Look-they're off. Aiyo!"

Someone poked Ron in the back of the head. It was Malfoy.

Malfoy grinned at Crabbe and Goyle.

"I wonder how long Potter can stay on his broomstick this time? Is anyone willing to bet? How are you, Weasley?"

"Do you still want to be beaten up? Malfoy?" Bance said.

"Flay, you will regret going against me.”said Malfoy.

"You're the only one I regret now." said Bunce, punching Malfoy in the face.

Ron came to help, but Goyle stopped him, and Bunce had already taken a few hits as he fought Malfoy and Crabbe. Neville hesitated, then rolled over from the back of his chair to help.

"Hurry up, Harry!" screamed Hermione, leaping onto her seat and watching Harry charge straight at Snape-she did not even notice Malfoy and Ron rolling around under her seat, or that Bunce was beating Goyle up, or that Neville and Crabbe were fighting and screaming in pain.

Up in the air, Snape had just started his broomstick when he saw something golden whoosh past his ear, inches away-and then Harry stopped his dive. He raised his arm triumphantly, the Snitch in his grasp.

The stands were seething. This was going to be a new record. No one could remember a match where the Snitch had been caught so quickly.

"Ron, Bunce! Where are you? The match was over! Harry won! We won! Gryffindor's in the lead!" squealed Hermione, jumping up and down in her chair and giving Patil a tight hug in the front row.

"Harry, where have you been?" squeaked Hermione.

"We won! You won! We won!" Ron slapped Harry hard on the back and shouted,"Malfoy's all three unconscious, Bunce killed two of them all by himself, Neville's got a broken nose. Tell me what happened to Slytherin! Everyone's waiting for you in the common room, they're having a celebration, Fred and George have stolen some cake or something from the kitchen.”

"Never mind that," said Harry breathlessly."Let's find an empty room, and I'll tell you."

When Harry was sure Peeves was not in the room, he closed the door behind him and told them what he had seen and heard.

"So we were right, that thing was the Sorcerer's Stone, and Snape was trying to force Quirrell to help him get it. He asked Quirrell if he knew how to subdue Fluffy-he mentioned Quirrell's 'little secret trick'-I'm guessing there's something else guarding the stone besides Fluffy, probably a whole bunch of magic, and Quirrell might have cast some anti-Dark-Arts spells that Snape needs to break-"

"You mean the Stone is only safe if Quirrell can fight Snape?”said Hermione in alarm.

"Don't define it too early." Bangs said as he covered his cheek.
