Chasing Dreams with a Sword (Wen Shiren)

Ever since I was young, I loved listening to adults tell stories about Wuxia. After entering primary school, reading Wuxia comics was my main pastime. At the beginning of 1960, when I entered junior high school, most of my classmates began to read martial arts novels. At that time, Taiwan was in the heyday of martial arts novels, and there were countless writers and works of martial arts novels. At first, after class or when the holidays began, everyone would immediately report to the wuxia novel rental shop. Later on, they were fascinated by it and even put a lot of wuxia novels in their school bags to read in the classroom. They remembered that once they were discovered by the teacher and were punished to stand for an afternoon.

At that time, there were many writers of martial arts novels. The more famous ones were Sima Ling, Wo Longsheng, Zhuge Qingyun, Shangguan Ding, Xiao Yi, Murong Mei, and so on. Most of them were the ones we read often. Later, Jin Yong gathered the achievements of each author and added historical periods and characters as the background writing method. In Jin Yong's era, martial arts novels were almost set in stone.

In the early 1970s, Jin Yong stopped writing new wuxia novels and began to organize and revise the fifteen wuxia masterpieces he had already completed. At that time, television media had gradually become the mainstream entertainment for people. The popularity of novels was not as high as before, and the number of new readers of martial arts novels had gradually decreased. The development of traditional and new martial arts novels had also come to an end. Therefore, it was understandable that Jin Yong's martial arts works were called " unprecedented."

In that era, there was another unforgettable writer, Gu Long. Gu Long's early wuxia works were lackluster, but a few years before Jin Yong stopped writing, Gu Long's writing changed and made a major breakthrough. He integrated the techniques of detective novels into the world of wuxia. Gu Long's famous work, Little Li Flying Dagger, had already used the techniques of detective novels. Later, the main characters written by Gu Long, such as Chu Liuxiang, Lu Xiaofeng, and Liu Changjie, were essentially heroes and great detectives. In Gu Long's wuxia detective novels (that's how I describe them), the protagonist usually had high martial arts and wisdom when he appeared. In the ancient time and space background, he fought against the evil forces in the martial arts world and solved many complicated and strange cases. Wuxia novels portrayed distinct characters, while detective novels focused on the suspense and the development of the story. Gu Long's mid-stage novels combined these two characteristics very well and wrote very exciting novels. Gu Long was the first author to make a breakthrough in martial arts novels after Jin Yong reached the peak of traditional and new martial arts novels. Especially in dealing with the emotions and dialogue between characters, Gu Long clearly had his own unique style. Unfortunately, Gu Long died young.

In the thirteen or fourteen years after Gu Long's death, due to the vigorous development of various media, especially electronic media, which transcended national borders and cultures, it made the development of novels even more difficult. It was easier said than done for a new martial arts novel to surpass the two heroes of Jin and Gu! Although there were a few new martial arts novelists, led by Wen Ruian, who were still working hard, it was difficult for martial arts novels to return to the prosperity and glory of the past.

Ever since I established Mingri Studio, I've always wanted to write martial arts novels. On the one hand, it's my own interest. On the other hand, martial arts novels are indeed a national essence of China.(2003) I'm currently working on a martial arts novel, The Legend of Qin, which is divided into eight parts. The main historical background is in the Qin Dynasty. I spent a lot of time reading, researching, and plotting the plot. I started from Jing Ke's assassination of the Qin Dynasty, integrating the Confucianism and Taoism of the time and the thoughts of the various schools of thought into it until the end of the Qin Dynasty. This is a major attempt. I have always believed that Wuxia is the common language of Chinese people all over the world and deserves to be carried forward.

[The Bright Moon of Qin Dynasty]: The Story of Jing Ke's Biography

Jing Ke and Li Ji were childhood sweethearts, but Li Ji's beauty shocked the world. The King of Qin knew about it and ordered the King of Qi to hand over Li Ji. After Li Ji was captured to the Qin Palace, she found out that she was pregnant with Jing Ke's son. In order to protect Jing Ke's bloodline, Li Ji gave herself to the Qin Palace. Jing Ke was depressed after losing Li Ji. However, he had an epiphany when he met a strange beast on the mountain and mastered the "Eighteen Shocking Swords". After spring and autumn, Li Ji gave birth to Jing Ke's son, Jing Tianming, in the Qin Palace. The King of Qin loved the house and the crow, and regarded them as his own children. Jing Ke accepted the important task of assassinating Qin from Yan Prince Dan. He took General Fan Yuqi's head and the territory of Dukang to present to the King of Qin. He wanted to take this opportunity to assassinate the King of Qin. Unexpectedly, Wei Zhuang, the chief guard of the King of Qin, had already informed the King of Qin about the assassination. The mission failed. Jing Ke and Li Ji both died in the palace of the King of Qin. Han Shen was entrusted by the two to escape from the palace with his son Jing Tianming. The King of Qin ordered the pursuit of Xi Zi's son Jing Tianming. He sent the four guards of the King of Qin, Feng Lin Huo Shan, to pursue him day and night. In the cold of the Yi River, on the banks of the Wu River, in the battle among the reeds, Han Shen was assassinated by the Twin Hammer Mountain of the Four Great Experts. Fortunately, the number one sword in the world, Ge Nie, arrived in time and used the Hundred Steps Flying Sword to kill the Four Great Experts. Only then did Jing Tianming temporarily escape this calamity. However, after this battle, Ge Nie was also seriously injured. The pursuit of the King of Qin was not interrupted because of this. The last wish of an old friend, the heavy trust of a martyr, the long night of silence, so the love was not extinguished. Ge Nie held the son of an old friend, Jing Tianming, and stepped out of the border of Yan Country, heading towards an unknown destination…
