Chapter VIII
The moon is like a silver plate, the sky is full of stars
On the top of the cliff, Reiner was lying on the grass. He was chewing on a blade of grass, allowing the faint bitterness to spread in his mouth.
He raised his fair palm to block his eyes and looked at the silver moon in the sky through the gaps between his fingers.
"Sigh!" Recalling what happened a few days ago, Reiner sighed and lazily pulled back his palms. He rested his head on his hands and was in a daze.
"How weak!" He muttered to himself softly and endlessly from Leonard's mouth.
"I wanted to go to the tail of the demon, but I was forced to join the heart of the demon. Fate is playing tricks on us!" Reiner sighed helplessly, his thoughts unconsciously returning to a few days ago.
The northern border towns would occasionally engage in small-scale battles with their neighboring countries. Due to the cold weather, some wild beasts or magical beasts that could not find food would attack the town from time to time. Therefore, other than the regular soldiers, the most common people here were combat mercenaries who relied on various missions to survive! The difference between the Mercenary Guild and the Magic Shooter Guild was that apart from gathering a large number of Magic Shooters, there were also a large number of combat experts who could not learn magic. They usually relied on accepting various missions to survive. Here, they did not have to join the guild to accept missions like other guilds. They only had to pay a certain deposit or prove that they had the strength to complete the mission. These quests weren't just for you to complete, but for others to accept the same quests as well. This resulted in whoever completed the quest receiving the reward, which was very popular among the mercenaries in the guild. As for how Reiner would prove his strength, one only needed to look at the bustling scene in the hall, which had instantly turned into a scene where one could hear a pin drop.
When Reiner entered the guild, the originally lively guild suddenly became a little quiet. There were some whispers.
"Eh? Why are they all staring at me? "Is there something dirty on my face?" Reiner touched his face with his hand, his face blank. Just as Reiner was still thinking, a huge shadow shrouded Reiner, and a rough voice sounded in his ears.
"Which family is this kid from? Why is he here?”Reiner looked up at the source of the shadow. It was an extremely tall man, probably more than two meters tall. His terrifying muscles bulged as if they would explode at any moment. The power contained in them was definitely enough to tear apart a bear and split a tiger. With a ferocious appearance, it was obvious that he was not someone to be trifled with. He was definitely the kind of guy that would make ordinary people stay as far away as possible. However, our Reiner was not an ordinary person. He raised his eyes and met the big guy's gaze. Don't you know that it's very tiring to look up at people like this!'Reiner complained in his heart, but he said indifferently,"I'm here for a mission.
The originally quiet guild suddenly became silent.
"Ahahahahaha!" After an unknown period of time, the guild suddenly erupted with laughter. This caused the pedestrians outside the guild to stop in their tracks and look at the guild. They were very curious about what had happened inside to make people laugh so loudly.
"Haha... I, I didn't hear wrongly, right? He actually said that he was here for a mission. Ahahaha!"
"This brat probably hasn't woken up yet!”
"Maybe it's a fool who ran out from somewhere."
"Ahahahaha!"
From time to time, ear-piercing words could be heard from the laughter around them. However, it was not surprising. After all, Reiner was only 13 years old. Although he was much taller than many of his peers, he was still very short in the eyes of those big and burly men. Especially the youthful look on his face and his seemingly "thin" body made the surrounding people think that they could smash Reiner with a punch. However, how could these people know how terrifying the strength was hidden in this thin body?
"Ahahahaha…I'm dying of laughter! This is definitely the funniest joke I've ever heard!”The big guy in front of him laughed so hard that he couldn't stand up straight. He held his aching stomach and slapped his thigh with his right hand from time to time.
"This is the Troop Association, not a kindergarten. There are no missions like playing house or hide-and-seek! You'd better go home and change your diapers!”
"Ahahaha…!" The people around him burst into even louder laughter because of the big guy's words.
Reiner still had the same indifferent expression. He wasn't angered by the ridicule and sarcasm of the people around him. Reiner didn't say a word. He walked past the big guy and walked towards the counter.
The laughter in the hall stopped because of Reiner's actions. Everyone looked at the little ghost in a daze.
"Am I dreaming? What did that brat do? He actually ignored Mad Wolf!”
"This brat is dead!"
"Mad Wolf is famous for having a bad temper. Anyone who offends Mad Wolf will not have a good ending. It's a pity that such a good-looking little brat."
A few seconds later, the people who had regained their senses began to discuss animatedly. Some were surprised, some were gloating, and some were regretful. However, they all had the same opinion, that this brat was dead for sure.
The big guy named Mad Wolf still maintained his original posture, but his face was full of disbelief, which then turned into boundless anger.
"Ah…! 'This damned brat actually dares to ignore me!' I'll make you pay for your foolish actions!!!”Mad Wolf roared angrily. He was one of the top experts in the Mercenary Association. Usually, everyone would be submissive and respectful when they saw him. Everyone would make way for him when they walked on the road. He didn't expect to be ignored by a kid today. This was a great humiliation. Mad Wolf swore that he would make this kid who dared to humiliate him disappear from this world.
"Go to hell!" Mad Wolf roared as he threw his sandbag-sized fist at Reiner, who was as fragile as a clay pot in his eyes. The wind created by the fist and the bulging veins on it showed that this was an all-out attack filled with hatred. There was no mercy at all.
Just when everyone thought that Reiner would be smashed into a meat patty by this terrifying attack, something even more shocking happened.
Mad Wolf's furious and confident attack was stopped about 50 centimeters away from Reiner. A pale right hand was resting weakly on the sandbag-sized fist. However, it was this weak hand that made Mad Wolf's arm and his entire body unable to move. Mad Wolf's originally angry expression was replaced by a painful expression, and beads of sweat continuously dripped from his forehead.
Reiner looked coldly at Mad Wolf and said coldly,""I don't like to cause trouble. However, if others insist on provoking me, then I can only…A green light flashed on Leonard's right hand, and a green breeze wrapped around Mad Wolf's entire body. Leonard casually waved his right hand, and Mad Wolf felt dizzy. His entire body spun crazily, and he shouted in fear. His entire body spun crazily, and in an instant, he flew out and crashed through the wall of the Mercenary Guild. Then, there was a "bang" sound. There was no more movement.
The hall was so silent that one could hear a pin drop. The people around looked at Reiner in horror, unable to believe what they were seeing.
"You're lying, right? How, how is this possible!"
"That little brat actually defeated Mad Wolf so casually.”
"I must be dreaming!"
The originally quiet hall was filled with incredulous voices, and those who had mocked Reiner earlier were all hiding in the corners and in the crowd, afraid that this terrifying little brat would take revenge on them.
Reiner ignored the discussions around him and went straight to the counter window. A white-bearded old man wiped the sweat from his forehead and asked respectfully,""Sir, what mission do you want to accept?”
"This one then. Kill Lanilu on Mount Smoker!”Reiner flipped through the mission list handed by the old man and pointed at the mission with the highest reward.
"Kill Lanilu on Mount Smoker? More than 30 people had died in that mission.”
"That's right, that's right. Does this kid think that he can fight against Lanilu just because he defeated Mad Wolf? Lanilu is a terrifying magical beast that isn't weaker than a Twin-legged Flying Dragon. This mission is even classified as an S-rank mission in the Magic Shooter Guild.”
When the mercenaries heard that it was this mission, there was an uproar. They began to talk to the people around them. When they talked about this, Lanilu and the others had deep fear in their eyes. The respectful gazes they had when they looked at Reiner had turned into the gazes of a dead man.
"It's okay, it's okay. This mission will do.”Hearing the discussion of the mercenaries, waves of curiosity surged in Reiner's heart. His confidence in his own strength made Reiner not give up on this mission.
"In that case…these are one-third of your commission and the power of attorney.”The old man sighed when he saw that his persuasion was futile. Then, he took out a bag of gold coins and a letter of authorization and handed it to Reiner.
"You're giving me a portion of the commission before the mission is completed?”Reiner took the bag of gold coins and said.
"Because this mission is too dangerous, a portion of the commission will be paid in advance.”the old man said.
"If that's the case, then it's a pretty good quest.”Hearing the old man's words, Reiner smiled. 'I'll have money for dinner tonight,' Reiner thought.
"Another brat who overestimates his own abilities. I wonder if he can leave a complete corpse under Lanilu's mouth.”Seeing Reiner disappear at the entrance of the guild, the mercenaries once again discussed intensely, their voices filled with schadenfreude.
However, these were just fleeting clouds for Reiner who already had money to eat. The most important thing now was to find a restaurant to comfort his stomach, then find a traveler's house to have a good sleep before completing the mission! After completing the mission, he would definitely use the commission to take a bus back to Magnolia Town.
After Reiner left, two more figures walked into the guild. However, the mercenaries who saw these two figures lowered their voices, afraid of angering these two killing gods.
"Brother, the mission we took a fancy to has already been taken away by someone, Mom.”A man with curly hair, an orange headscarf, and sunglasses said to his brother beside him.
"Hmph, interesting. There's actually someone who dares to compete with us, brother Panisius, for a mission. It seems like it'll be very interesting, little brother.”A man with braids that looked like the Chinese and Qing dynasties said with a ferocious expression. He was wearing a white martial arts suit and carrying a huge iron pot on his back.
After accepting the mission to kill Lanilu from the staff, the two brothers quickly left the Mercenary Guild. Before they left, they looked at the mercenaries with disdain and a hint of killing intent that made the mercenaries in the guild feel the smell of death.
"Is that the strongest mercenary, brother Panius? This terrifying aura was really too strong.”A mercenary wiped the sweat off his forehead and said in a trembling voice.
"Aren't they always active in the Fiore Kingdom? Why did they appear in the border town this time?”Another mercenary suppressed his fear and said.
" I heard that a Grand Duke in the Kingdom of Fiore has issued a similar mission to get Lanilu's gallbladder..." a well-informed mercenary immediately said.
"Lanilu's gallbladder? Could it be that the Grand Duke…Wahaha.”After mentioning Lanilu's gallbladder, the mercenary who had guessed it suddenly laughed out loud. The surrounding mercenaries also laughed out loud after they realized what was going on. The fear that had originally pervaded the guild was swept away.
"Why are they so happy? What's the use of Lanilu's gallbladder?" Apparently, a fledgling mercenary didn't understand why everyone was suddenly laughing.
" Because Lanilu's gallbladder only has one use, and that is to help men in that aspect…" The old mercenary could not help but laugh out loud.
"What a good little brat."
In a corner of the Troop Association, an old man with a beard that reached his abdomen and an eye patch on his face was drinking tea in his hand. The corners of his mouth revealed an inexplicable smile. He then took out a few gold coins from his pocket and placed them on the table. He then picked up his walking stick and disappeared from the guild in a flash. Other than the cup on the table that was still emitting the fragrance of tea, it was as if he had never appeared. There was only a slight mana fluctuation in the space.
