"You idiot," said Jane, Luo Chong. Her voice was warm and gentle. She had been using Yang Jiaqi as a cold steel.
" Jane, I…"
"How can you put that poor girl in this position?”asked Jane angrily.
It was rare for Jen to show any sort of temper, especially towards her brother. Nick looked surprised. She grabbed Jen's hand and held it gently, when she saw the young woman's angry face.
"I didn't say that."
"Do you know what you did to her?”Jane asked. "Mom and Dad will never respect her. Fuck their son under their own roof, then go downstairs the next morning, she's always a tramp.”
"But, she wants…"
" Mom's reading research," Jane said.
"What's wrong with you?"
"It was Saturday morning. Mom always read at least one novel weekend, and she started drinking her coffee and Bailey's. "You might get her past, but there's no way you'll get Yang Jiaqi out of the house without Dad seeing her," Jane said.
"Then…"
" You have to pretend that she has a purpose," Jane said.
"What?" Luo Chong asked.
" You have to tell Mom and Dad that you invited Yang Jiaqi to brunch. You forgot to tell them," Jen told him.
" How could this be…"
Jane interrupted him again. "Under ideal circumstances, it won't come. Obviously, the first thing you did was to try to sneak in at the door without Mom noticing Yang Jiaqi's research, but that's highly unlikely. Even if you did, Dad would most likely meet you in the kitchen and pass you by a second time. He liked to read the news on his laptop at the kitchen table.
Luo Chong didn't ask how Jane was so familiar with their family's exercise patterns.
"But how are we going to convince them?”he asked.
" You told her to go through the back door," Jane told him.
Luo Chong frowned. "Why would I do that?"
"Because she might have walked through without seeing her dad," she said.”
Luo Chong rolled his eyes. "Yeah, obviously. I mean, why did I let her stay with me instead of going through the front door?”
Yang Jiaqi overheard the discussion because she had cleaned up the evidence from her face, washed her makeup the night before, and returned to Jane's bedroom, and transformed into the equipment that they had arranged. Her fingers shook. She felt a little uncomfortable with the buttons on her shirt. She was wearing a long purple dress that reached her waist. Jian's feet were half the size of Yang Jiaqi's feet, making it slightly uncomfortable for her to walk in.
Jean Rushing gave a specious lie to her parents, telling them that as they grew up, Nick became more and more distracted and became more insistent on her attempts to coax Jane back into playing. When Luo Chong heard Jane panting, he decided to get off the phone as soon as possible in an intensely pleasant manner. Yang Jiaqi thought that Luo Chong's hand was resting on her shoulder, so she turned around. His phone was already back in his pocket. He leaned forward and kissed her gently.
"It'll be fine," he said." Yang Jiaqi didn't know if he tried to comfort him or her, but she nodded.
The two of them tiptoed out of Jane's room. This plan had three stages. The first was to try to sneak out. The second was that Luo Chong deliberately played with Yang Jiaqi's existence. If he was caught, the third was to scream and run away. Admittedly, Luo Chong added that the third plan was laid out. He led Yang Jiaqi along the corridor, stepping as gently as they could, and they came to the stairs. After snatching the second floor of the house, his hand and Rose signaled Yang Jiaqi to leave her to open the door for them. He took a quick peek inside the room.
Jane had anticipated their mother reading in her chair, and she took a sip from her coffee, her eyes still trained on her book. He waved his hand at Yang Jiaqi, telling her to hurry up and cross over. She quickly crossed over, a vague motion that caught his mother's attention, but she returned to her book after denigrating it as a figment of her imagination. Yang Jiaqi and Luo Chong smiled back with a smile and the two remaining stairs fell all the way down the corridor.
They descended to the ground, and nothing happened, but Luo Chong was on high alert. They had not yet met his father, which made him nervous. Luo Chong had already convinced himself that they were actually trying to get rid of a voice that appeared behind him.
"Robbie?"
Luo Chong jumped and turned.
"Aunt Deb?" he asked.
Yang Jiaqi looked like an animal with horns. Her eyes were wide open. Deborah was his mother's sister. Luo Chong still didn't know that she was staying with them. She looked exhausted and had dark circles under her eyes. She was wearing a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt, and an old nightgown was slung over her shoulder. Her dyed blonde hair, which was usually carefully combed and washed, hung limply around her shoulders.
" Uncle…" Luo Chong began.
" Dunn is an idiot," his aunt told him. " A real jerk, don't get married," she told Yang Jiaqi.
After Deb came over, her sister's house was particularly explosive. She did it on occasion, and though she was angry with his uncle now, he knew it wouldn't be long before they patched things up. His aunt gave them the house, which was a short walk away. She and her family lived next door in Luo Chong. His childhood best friend had always been her son, Richard, who was now at Harvard. In a strange way, Richard Luo Chong's cousin twice. Their fathers were brothers and sisters, and their brothers and sisters were their mothers.
Yang Jiaqi blinked. "Yes, it's alright."
"Luo Chong?" His mother's voice came from the top of the stairs.
Damn it.
" Mom," Luo Chong said as she walked down the stairs.
Yang Jiaqi tried to melt through the wall. She tried to use her plasterboard and insulation bricks. When Luo Chong stepped up his protection in front of her, his mother watched as she took the principal and interest.
"Who is this?" she asked as she reached the bottom of the stairs.
Luo Chong looked at the person on his shoulder, looking rather worried about Yang Jiaqi. He found it laughable that they were sneaky, hidden, and operated in such a way. He was proud of Yang Jiaqi's date. He loved her. She was smart, she was beautiful, and she was his. Luo Chong might have just imagined the way he had always held his grandfather's opinion and felt ashamed.
"This is Yang Jiaqi, my girlfriend." New confidence.
Luo Chong's hand returned to Yang Jiaqi, who took it and stepped on his side. He told his mother the lie Jane had prepared for him, telling her that her father had gotten her off for brunch. Fortunately, his aunt Deb had already spotted them near the front door. They had already gotten lucky, the lie was bought. Yang Jiaqi thought that his mother was judging her by her appearance. Something passed her characteristics, a kind of recognition, but it quickly disappeared.
"Nice to meet you," she said. "I've heard so much about you.”
Yang Jiaqi's hair.
"Thank you, Luo Chong, for telling me everything about you and Mr. Luo Zi." Marilyn leveled her satisfied gaze.
Marilyn blinked, her expression gentle. She smiled warmly. Her son's girlfriend had decided that she liked her.
" Luo Chong, you should have told me that you had Yang Jiaqi coming over. I would have kept your father home. He went to play golf," she said.
Deb rolled her eyes. "Such a boring sport, I don't understand why anyone would find it so fascinating around the club.”
" I've noticed that men have a mesmerizing ball-like object," Yang Jiaqi replied, casually gesturing with her jade-like peaks.
Marilyn's eyes widened, while De Bu smiled. Luo Chong was not willing to fall behind. His mother joined them. After that, the meal was surprisingly enjoyable. Yang Jiaqi quickly became the center of attention because she was usually the mother of the charming Luo Chong. She gained confidence very quickly. She played Deb's anti-masculine smile while using the same feeling to flatter them so that they wouldn't find out that they were disgusted. This gave the robber a chance to compliment her in return, making the conversation easier.
Yang Jiaqi tried her best to relax. She still couldn't get her father's attention. He was probably panicking. The problem was that she left her phone in Luo Chong's car and couldn't think of an excuse to go out and make a call with it. So she sat down and chatted happily, knowing that her father would definitely call her ten times more than he did now. She only hoped that if his name was Luo Chong, she would cover her.
After the meal, the two of them politely excused themselves and Luo Chong and Yang Jiaqi visited the house. As for his parents, they knew that Yang Jiaqi had never been in front of their house. They went out and came back. Yang Jiaqi retrieved her wallet from the car and found her phone number. Luo Chong smiled and heaved a sigh of relief. Things had once been so wonderful. Yang Jiaqi placed a phone home and frowned. It was her voice mail.
Then, she noticed that she had half a dozen messages on her phone, including a message from her stepmother, Lauren. Her face sank when she saw what it was, and the ice returned to her stomach. The house that Luo Chong mentioned was the one they were heading back to.
" I think we are…" Luo Chong noticed Yang Jiaqi's expression and stopped. "Is there something wrong?"
" This is…this is my mother," Yang Jiaqi said, tears forming in her eyes. "She…she tried to commit suicide.”
Luo Chong held Yang Jiaqi's hand and boarded the elevator. The bell rang four times before the door opened, and they walked out. Yang Jiaqi was still wearing the borrowed clothes. She kept it simple and rubbed her feet uncomfortably. She noticed these details, these unimportant and insignificant things.
Yang Jiaqi didn't even tell her mother about it since the last time they quarreled. She thought that she had received a call from her mother the night before, but so far, she had not heard any news of her leaving. Yang Jiaqi was frightened. It might contain something. They went to her mother's room and saw the nurse on duty. They found Yang Ji and Lauren sitting on chairs outside the room. Yang Ji stood there and hugged his daughter, holding her hand to protect her.
"I'm very worried that you're sick." He told her.
