Ninja (Ninja,) was a special profession unique to Japan. The official name was determined during the Edo period. Ninjas were trained in ninjutsu and mainly engaged in spying. Like the samurai's Bushido, ninjas followed a set of special rules that they were proud of. Ninjas usually wore dark blue or purple clothes. This was because the dark blue and dark purple clothes that were close to the color of the night sky made it easier for ninjas to not be discovered by others.

Ninja Style

Ninjas were simply special killers and spies who had received special training in ninjutsu from a special organization in ancient Japan. It was in the form of a " factional organizational unit."

It was similar to a spy. Such as Cai Jinjiang ninja and so on.

The most different thing about it was that there was an additional training for ninjutsu. Many people had the impression that ninjas always appeared in black and masked every time they went on a mission. In fact, they were influenced by the " materialization " of martial arts novels and movies. The black clothes were not necessarily the so-called " ninja uniform." In fact, the people of ancient Japan often wore this kind of black work clothes when they were working. It was a kind of work clothes in ancient Japan. When the ninjas were in the dark, it was convenient for them to carry out the secret needs of the mission, so they specially wore this kind of black-dyed work clothes. There were some special modifications on the work clothes to meet the needs of the mission and combat.

On the other hand, real ninjas often did not appear in black or with a mask like in novels and movies when they went on missions. They often disguised themselves as various social figures or characters from all walks of life to blend into the general crowd as a cover for their identity. For example, beggars, alms monks, acrobats, street vendors, warriors, ronin, monks, charlatans, and so on. Some ninjas were similar to modern intelligence agents and spies.

2 Name Evolution

edit

The term 'ninja' was officially used in the Edo period of Japan, but the history of ninjas can be traced back to an even older era. It was said that the first person to send a ninja to complete a mission in Japan was Prince Seongdeoku. At that time, ninjas were commonly known as Shinobi. At the same time, ninjas had their own unique names in various eras and regions: For example, during the Asuka era, it was called " Shinobi," during the Nara era, it was called " Scout," and during the Sengoku era, it was called " Rampo," which was named by Takeda Shingen. During the Edo era, it was called " Ninja " just like today.

The Edo period was the period when the name ninja was officially established. At the same time, it was also the beginning of the peaceful period of Japan under the Tokugawa family's rule. This caused the ninja to lose the stage for activities, and their role became smaller and smaller, eventually fading out of people's vision. Many ninjutsu were lost as a result. The last record of ninjas 'activities was the "Shimahara Riot" in 1637. The ninjas participated in this battle as subordinates of the shogunate.

The job of a ninja was mainly to carry out secret plans, sabotage, assassinations, collecting information on the enemy's frontline, disrupting the enemy's backup bases, and other spying activities for the Lord. When a ninja was alive, they had to conceal their identity and stay in the dark. They could not leave behind a single word to avoid being exposed in the future. Therefore, there were very few historical records about ninjas. Only a ninja who was beside Prince Shengde was recorded in the secret book of ninjutsu. The origin of ninjas became a historical problem.

Although there were countless ninjutsu schools in Japan, the origin of ninjutsu could be traced back to Iga (northwest of Mie Prefecture) and Kaga (south of Shiga Prefecture). The two had the same ancestor and were mostly relatives. However, if the employer (ruler) of each other was hostile, they would have to fight against each other, or even fight against each other.

In the world of ninjas, there were four basic rules: Not allowed to abuse ninjutsu (can only be used for official business), give up all self-esteem (escape is important), must keep a secret (even if you lose your life), must not reveal your identity (this is the most fundamental). Ninjas were most active in the following three eras: The Genhei Era from the end of the 11th century to the end of the 12th century, the Northern and Southern Dynasties from the 13th century, and the Warring States Era from the middle of the 14th century to the end of the 15th century. The Warring States Period could also be said to be the era of ninjas.

3. Ninja Level

edit

The Warring States Period from the 15th century to the end of the 16th century could also be said to be the era of ninjas. Ninjas were divided into upper ninjas, middle ninjas, and lower ninjas. Jounin, also known as the 'brain tank', specialized in planning the overall combat steps. The 'Chuunin' was the leader of the actual combat command. Of course, the ninjutsu had to be extraordinary. Genin, also known as Shinobu, was equivalent to the special forces and was an actual ninja fighting at the front line. There was a clear hierarchy between the three.

4 Ninja Equipment

edit

attire

Ninjas usually sneaked into enemy towers and mansions on new moons or cloudy nights. If they were always dressed in black, their outlines would be more prominent. Therefore, the basic color of their attire was often dark blue. On moonlit nights, they would change into gray or brown clothes.

As for the underwear, it was of course the traditional Japanese crotch cloth (a thin white cloth). However, the binding method of a ninja was different from that of an ordinary person. The length was also longer. They wrapped the crotch cloth from their necks to their crotches and finally tied it around their waists. In this way, he could pull out the crotch cloth from the back of his neck at any time and use it as a bandage or rope in case of emergency. There were many pockets inside the jacket, for gunpowder, sewing needles, emergency medicine (including sleeping pills and poison), etc. He kept some daily necessities in his belt. Gloves and leggings usually hid some hidden weapons.

weapons

In order to fool the interrogation of the border guards, the ninjas often dressed up as farmers on the road. Therefore, some hidden weapons were often modified from farming tools, daily necessities, gardener tools, and so on. Most of these weapons were invented and forged by himself. Only he knew how to use them, so in the eyes of others, they were no different from ordinary daily necessities. This was also one of the main reasons why many ninja weapons were lost.

Most of the ninjas 'weapons came from daily farming tools, and their usage and appearance were very strange. According to historical descriptions, ninjas often used scythes with iron chains attached to their tails. During normal combat, they could hold the scythe handle in close combat, or they could use the iron chains to throw the scythe out to assassinate their opponents, and then use the iron chains to retract them. Tokugawa Ieyasu's guards were the Iga ninjas. They pretended to be gardeners and used large trimming shears to trim the branches. Once they saw someone coming, they would immediately monitor them. Once they discovered that the other party had any ill intentions, they would kill the other party.

From the various ninjutsu secret books, modern people learned that the ninjutsu weapons were: "Shuriken"(or shuriken),"Makibisi","Shinobigatana","Hukiya","Sikomidue","Tekkoukagi","Water Spider"(mizuguno),"Bow","Kunai","Wenjin","Pingconi","Inquisition", etc.

Shuriken is similar to darts, and can hit every target within ten yards. Generally, there are eight-sided shurikens, hexagonal shurikens, and cross-handed swords.

Ninja Shuriken

Ninja Shuriken

Shuriken, triangular shuriken, and swastika-shaped shuriken. After these shuriken were thrown out, they would rotate around their geometric center in the air, so the trajectory was stable and a certain degree of accuracy could be guaranteed at close range. The multi-edged shuriken mainly relied on its sharp horns to kill the enemy. Its lethality was limited, so ninjas would smear poison on each horn. It was a very dangerous weapon. Shurikens weighed between 40 to 60 grams, and most ninjas would not carry dozens of them. After all, being as light as a swallow was one of their advantages.

Saline, also known as cross nails, was a diamond-shaped weapon that was scattered behind one's back when escaping. Anything that was uneven and could hurt one's feet, such as natural stones, dried fruits, iron, etc., could be used as a substitute.

The ninjato was blunt and attached to a rope about three meters long. When climbing over the city wall, it could be used as a stepping tool and then retracted with the rope. The scabbard could be used as a breather in the water when in danger.

"Blowing arrow" was a poisonous needle, usually hidden in a flute. Sometimes, they had to dress up as an artist during the journey. Therefore, in addition to learning how to blow arrows, ninjas also had to practice how to play the flute.

The Ninja Staff was a weapon used to defeat the weak. First, the bamboo was treated with oil, and both ends were covered with copper. It attacked the opponent's acupuncture points, reducing the opponent's attack ability and will to fight. Some weapons could also be hidden in the middle, such as chains and spears.

There were all kinds of "hand armor hooks". Some were installed on the nails, and some were placed on the back of the hand. It depended on which kung fu the person was good at and he could change the trick himself.

The Water Spider was a prop used when crossing the river. It could be folded and hidden in a bag.

"Bow and arrow." The bows used by ninjas were divided into two types: big bows and small bows. The big bow was used for long-range shooting, while the small bow was used for close-range shooting. In addition to archery, they could also shoot rockets, whistling arrows, and blooming arrows (a type of arrow that could explode) to harass the enemy. Modern ninjas had pistols, and bows and arrows were cumbersome and inconvenient. Only one type of blowing crossbow was still in use. There were steel needles hidden in the blowpipe of the blowbow. When he blew hard, the steel needles would shoot out, but the distance was only two to three meters. The arrowheads were often fed with poison to attack the enemy more effectively. The female ninja was an expert in using bows and arrows.

'Kunai' was a tool called Kunai that was 18 centimeters long. There were two explanations for it: First, it was a tool for climbing walls. Sometimes, ninjas needed to stick to the wall to carry out their tasks, so the rope hook was a little inconvenient. With a few Kunai, they could be inserted into the wall, stepped on, and pulled by hand. The end of the hook could be tied to the rope for easy withdrawal.

Second, it was a hidden weapon used by Japanese ninjas. There were five basic ways to use it: horizontal chop, vertical chop, oblique chop, straight stab, and flying shot. It was a shuriken, a type of hidden weapon.

" Wen Jin," Wen Jin was actually an ancient eavesdropping device. One end was inserted into the wall. Because gold was soft, it could bond tightly with the material in the cracks of the wall such as sand. Then, one could put one's ear on the Wen Jin and listen to the words of the people in the room. What was the wire for? Then it would be up to the experts to use it. The experts would use a steel wire to connect this piece of Wen Jin with another piece of Wen Jin inserted in a quiet place. They could then put their ears on that piece of Wen Jin and hear the sound in the house from afar! It was said that the bottom quarter of the metal should be made of pure gold. The steel wire at the back was used to connect to another piece of gold when necessary, but the wire had to be very tight when used.

'Takashi' was a wooden scraper used to scrape the wooden houses in Japan. He used the U-shaped blade to scrape the wood. As for its function, it was to open a hole in the wooden wall to peek.

"Ask Outside" was 18 cm long and 4 cm curved on the head. It was used to pull things like door bolts and windows in the dark. The bend in front is for convenience, and the fire-sowing rod we use is rarely straight. This curve was the same as the curve in front of the passage.

Ninja Food

edit

Ninjas could never "gain weight" because they had to be invisible from the ceiling, under the floor, or even hanging from trees or pillars in the house. They only had to support their weight with their hands. Therefore, some people said that ninjas had to be careful not to weigh more than 60 kilograms. In terms of arm strength, the upper limit of a person's weight to be able to fight an enemy with one hand in the air was 60 kilograms (some people even said that if you didn't believe it, you could try it yourself). "Ninja Food" is mainly based on grains, low in calories, low in fat, and high in protein. The staple food was usually brown rice, wheat, and sweet potatoes. The side dishes were tofu made from soybeans and miso. The rest were plums, vegetables, sesame seeds, quail eggs, and so on. Food that would enhance body odor, such as leeks, meat, onions, garlic, ginger, and cigarettes, were all banned. Moreover, ninjas often bathed and washed clothes to get rid of their body odor. Other than that, pine nuts, harpies, and other fruits were also one of the ninjas 'staple foods.

It was also important to carry food. Once a mission order was received, whether it was camping in the wild or lurking on the ceiling of an enemy's residence, one must carry 'food' on them to maintain their strength. Dried taro can be strung into a necklace and hung around the neck. Steamed rice could be preserved after being dried. Both could be brewed with boiling water and become fast food to satisfy one's hunger. In addition, ergot, plums, and rock sugar were mixed into a pill, which became a "thirst quenching pill". The Bing Liang Pill was made of carrot, wheat flour, wheat flour, sweet potato, licorice, coix seed, and glutinous rice flour. All of them were ground into powder and soaked in wine for three years. After the wine evaporated, they were kneaded into the size of peach pits. Only three pills a day were eaten, so there was no need to worry about exhausting physical strength. There was also a type of " Bing Liang Pill ", which was made with carrots, wheat flour, glutinous rice flour, honey, and wine. It was simmered and dried, then kneaded into small balls and dried. Taking 30 pills a day could obtain the necessary vitamins. 'Bing Liang Pill' should be used by soldiers to defend the city during war, right? In short, this was also one of the main ninja foods.

6 Ninja's Specialties

edit

Ninjas were in the form of 'factional organizational units'. There were many sects scattered throughout Japan, both official and unofficial. Basically, the birth of the ninja was largely related to the objective environment of the ancient Japanese Warring States Period.

The Warring States Period in ancient Japan was similar to the Spring and Autumn Warring States Period in the early days of China. The city-states were separated and each had their own way of doing things. Everywhere was filled with chaos, bloodshed, and merciless battles. These vassals and warlords, who were fighting for power and profit, urgently needed to train a group of specialized infiltration troops that could quickly sneak into the enemy's rear to carry out reconnaissance, spying, assassination, disruption, destruction, and other spy missions. Ninjas were born in such a chaotic and dangerous environment.

In the early days, the " specialized infiltration forces " cultivated by these warlords did not actually employ " ninjas " in the early days. They were just an official intelligence unit that any regime would inevitably set up. In other words, he was just a simple "spy". Then what was the difference between the so-called " ninja " and " spy "? We all know that "Ninjutsu" is a special cultivation technique that was passed down to Japan from China through cultural exchanges between the two countries. "Ninjutsu" gradually evolved into many sects in Japan, which were distributed all over Japan.

Ninjas were originally just a name for " ninjutsu practitioners ", and some " ninjutsu practitioners " who formed their own factions had many disciples. These " ninjutsu practitioners " themselves or their disciples had privately used the " ninjutsu " they had learned to cultivate their own " private troops ". They began to manage them with a corporate and militarized business philosophy. Sometimes they were paid to become professional killers and mercenaries, and sometimes they were hired by government units to carry out missions behind enemy lines.

Later on, because the government analyzed and evaluated the ninjas from the perspective of investment returns and investment risks, they found that the ninjas 'strategic value, mission efficiency, and loyalty were higher than ordinary spies and assassins. Therefore, the "ninjas" gradually received the attention of the government. As a result, there was a dedicated ninja force belonging to the government.

Like spies, ninjas were considered special operations organizations. However, what was different about ninjas was that apart from the basic training of spies, the most different thing about them was that they had an additional training in ninjutsu. (Ninjas were the ultimate warriors trained by special forces units with ninjutsu techniques.)The mission form was more complicated and not simple. It was of a higher level than ordinary spies. This was the so-called "ninja."

Many people always thought that ninjas would appear in black clothes and masks every time they went on a mission. In fact, they were influenced by the exaggerated " materialization " of martial arts novels and movies. The black clothes were not the so-called " ninja uniform." In fact, the people of ancient Japan often wore this kind of black work clothes when they were working. It was just a kind of work clothes in ancient Japan. It was only because the ninjas could conveniently carry out the secret needs of the mission when it was quiet in the dark that they specially wore this black work uniform. There were some special modifications on the work uniform to meet the mission and combat requirements.

Ninja Five Paths

edit

A successful ninja had to be good at integrating himself with the outside world, combining movement and stillness to complete the mission. Therefore, they paid attention to the five ninjas of food, incense, medicine, qi, and body to complete their daily cultivation and training.

Let's talk about food first. Ninjas often had to appear and disappear on tree branches and roofs, so it was said that a qualified ninja could not weigh more than 60 kilograms. Three meals a day were mainly black rice, oats, tofu, and konjac. At the same time, ninjas needed to maintain their stamina, so sesame seeds, pine nuts, brown sugar, quail eggs, and other foods rich in protein, iron, and vitamins were often used. This diet structure coincided with the " low calories, high nutrition " advocated by modern life.

And then there was the fragrance. It was said that successful ninjas could judge the economic situation and social status of the other party by the smell of their clothes. But at the same time, in order not to let the other party find out about their background, the ninja would often use the seven forms of merchant, cultivator, monk, and traveling monk to hide their identity. The basic spices such as cloves, sandalwood, and laurel were used by them to create different body scents and enhance the authenticity of their transformation.

As for the medicine, it was not simple either. When a ninja was carrying out a mission, it was inevitable that they would bump into each other or be injured by the other party. When they were carrying out a long-term ambush mission, how to avoid mosquito bites was also an important topic. Therefore, a qualified ninja had to be a qualified doctor and a medical expert at the same time. They had to be good at using all kinds of plants and herbs in the forest to treat illnesses and deworm insects.

The so-called qi meant that ninjas had to pay attention to self-cultivation so that they could concentrate their energy in actual combat, be decisive and brave, and not be shocked by changes.

Body, on the other hand, emphasized on training the muscles and joints of the ninja. At the same time, he trained himself with meditation, breathing, massage, acupuncture, and other recovery methods. In addition to the above five points, if you completely believed the ninja relics displayed in the " Legacy Hall," you would find that the brilliant ninjas were also astrologers and mathematicians. They could predict the weather by watching the stars and concoct all kinds of gunpowder.

The Ninja's Nine Words Proverb referred to the front. The nine-character incantation was used by Taoist priests to drive away demons in the mountains. Ninjas also used the nine-character incantation. Ninjas used it probably because they lived in an environment where they could die at any time. Reciting this incantation could hypnotize themselves to eliminate fear and increase their mental strength.

The real Ninjutsu originated from the Celestial Empire. Ninjutsu, also known as the Hidden Technique (then known as the Five Elements Escape Technique in China), was later spread to Japan. It was the same as karate, judo, Shaolin boxing, and other Japanese martial arts.

Five Elements Escape Technique-Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth.

[Golden Escape Technique: A technique that uses bright metal to emit sounds and light to deceive the enemy into escaping.]

[Wood Escape Technique: A ninjutsu technique that uses trees and grass to escape.] The origin of Wood Escape was that when practicing, they usually practiced on trees. In the past, the houses were low, and those who could climb trees could basically sneak into any house.

[Water Escape Technique: Cultivate swimming skills, use tubes to breathe underwater, use special wooden shoes (water spiders) to cross the river, etc.]

[Fire Escape Technique: Use chemical methods to make smoke bombs or some props for setting fires. There were no bombs in the past, so the fire escape firearms stopped at the primitive fireworks.]

[Earth-burrowing Technique: It's not like the kind of escaping by drilling into the ground in movies. It's actually a technique that uses the dents in the ground, stone walls, and earth walls to escape.] In the past, most of the land was soft and easy to implement. The person who learned this skill would dig a tunnel or a hole to hide according to the nature of the soil.

In the later period of the Han Dynasty, due to the constant wars, the escape technique was born, mainly used to avoid the chaos of soldiers and horses.

The Path of Cultivation

edit

Ninjutsu was popular in Japan during the Warring States Period because of its strong practicality. Ninjutsu was a complete set of spy intelligence techniques mastered by ancient Japanese ninjas, including: Tracking, reconnaissance, intelligence, bodyguards, assassination, and many other aspects. Ninjas were superhuman and were good at using swords, hooks, and other weapons, as well as darts and other hidden weapons. They could leap over roofs and walk on walls, and they could run on the sand without making a sound. It could hold its breath in the water for up to five minutes. If it used special equipment, it could stay underwater for a day and a night. They were good at fighting on the surface of the water and underwater, and could even dive to the bottom of the boat to eavesdrop on the conversations of the people on the boat... These superhuman skills could only be learned through inhuman training.

Ninjutsu training must start from a young age. All members of the ninja family, regardless of gender, age, must unconditionally inherit this family's professional tradition (ninjutsu training). In terms of the content of ninjutsu training, the basic training mainly included balance, agility, strength, endurance, and special skills.

Balance training: First, start with walking on a bamboo pole, until you can stand on a round bamboo pole without slipping; He raised the bamboo pole about three feet above the ground and continued to walk on the bamboo pole until he could move freely. He continued to increase the height of the bamboo pole until it reached a height of thirty to forty feet. At this point, he was not afraid of height, flipping and jumping as if he was walking on flat ground. Only with this kind of balance could one walk on roofs, walls, and trees as if they were flying.

Agility training: Training starts from childhood, with more agility training, such as jumping over a rope full of blades, and doing dangerous obstacle running in the later stages of training. Running is full of dangerous obstacles, and if the body technique is slightly ineffective or the reaction is slightly insensitive, you will be injured by the obstacles. Therefore, the requirements for sensitivity in ninjutsu were very strict.

Endurance training: Ninjutsu's endurance training is divided into two training methods: static and dynamic. [Quiet training method: hang your hands on the tree to support your whole body. The ground is filled with hidden weapons. The practitioner must never let go and jump off. The dynamic training method uses basic long-distance running skills. You must have the endurance to run fifty to sixty miles.] An excellent ninjutsu master could run more than 150 miles a day.

Strength training: Ninjutsu's strength training seeks to maximize the strength of the human body. There are many training methods used, and they are not listed here.

[Special Skill Training: There are many types of special skill training in Ninjutsu martial arts, such as diving and holding breath, hand-to-hand combat, swordplay, hidden weapons, makeup, medicine, poison and detoxification, hearing and smell training... and a high level of survival ability in the wild.]

Through these inhumane practices with extremely high mortality rates, the ninjas had achieved superhuman leaps in both their minds and bodies. He had obtained extraordinary perseverance, endurance, and combat strength. The ninjas who survived through ninjutsu training were all absolutely reliable full-powered combat machines.

Ninjutsu martial arts required ninjas to be first-class in swordsmanship, archery, equestrian, jiu-jitsu, footwork, body balance, poison darts, and other aspects. However, the martial technique with the highest requirement was still the famous stealth flying technique. Concealment was actually not a real stealth technique. It was just that the ninja had been trained to be extremely agile and had a strong ability to jump and run. Before anyone noticed him, he would have already disappeared. This skill was known in the Chinese language as jumping on roofs and walking on walls. It was actually practiced by jumping, grabbing, climbing, and crossing martial arts over a long period of time. Due to the mysterious actions and hidden whereabouts of ninjutsu masters, people also called ninjutsu "ghost technique" and "invisible technique". [1]In addition to flight and invisibility, the release of hidden weapons was also one of the unique ninjutsu martial arts techniques. Ninjutsu hidden weapons were mostly poison darts and copper coins (edged), but there were also swords and chisels. Ninjutsu concealed weapons were used more often, and throwing poisoned copper coins was the unique skill of every ninjutsu master.

Along with flying and throwing hidden weapons, there was also poison and detoxification. Ninjutsu experts were all skilled in this. According to the records, the poison used in ninjutsu was extracted from minerals, animals, and plants. The potency of the poison was strong enough to kill a person. Even a small amount of the drug was enough to make a person drowsy, paralyzed, or temporarily delirious. Many methods of poisoning in ninjutsu were also very secretive. The tip of daggers, darts, and arrows was dipped in poison for assassination. murder by poisoning food or drink; Use all kinds of poisonous items such as poisonous flowers. Ninjutsu's antidotes were made from herbs and medicinal wine.

Ninjutsu, which was regarded as a "killing technique", had long been specialized in ninja organizations for spying on intelligence and assassinating political enemies. In the era of the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan, the popularity of spy and counter-spy activities was inadvertently a big battle between various ninja organizations.

In the development of society, ninjutsu and ninja terrorist activities were condemned by the world and finally banned. Ninjutsu activities were completely underground. Few people knew about it. Only through the exaggeration of film and television works did the world once again recognize Japan's ancient and cruel martial arts flower.

Survival in the Wild

edit

Ninjas had rich knowledge of herbs and could distinguish between poison and medicine. They acted according to the situation. He knew the habits of wild animals like the back of his hand. Many ninjutsu were learned from the habits of wild animals. Astronomical Meteorology was one of the indispensable basic ninjutsu. For example, if there were any water droplets on the spider web at night, it would be sunny the next day. There was a halo around the moon, or when the moon was brighter than usual, it would rain the next day. The rain that started at midnight, eight in the morning, and in the evening could last for several days. When one got lost in the mountains, they would heat the needle head with fire or coat it with wax and immediately put it in water. The direction the needle head was pointing in was the north. The sewing needles on the ninjas could not only be used to identify directions, but they could also be used as acupuncture tools when injured or tired. What would he do when he ran out of water? Find an ant hole or a mole cricket hole. Where there were ants and mole cricket, there must be a water source nearby.

Nine-Word Proverb

edit

Nine words: 'When you enter the mountain, you should know the secret wish of the Six Arks."Those who fight in front of the army should form an array and move forward. They should always pray secretly and avoid everything." It meant that if one chanted these nine words often, they could get rid of all evil. Dong Mi was influenced by the Taoism of the Celestial Dynasty (using the protection spell), but when copying these nine words, he mistakenly copied the words 'array forward' as 'array (crack) in front' and still used it until now. The meaning of these nine words was:

Peace of mind and body

It meant that one would remain unmoved in the face of the situation, maintain an unmoving and unconfused will, and show a strong physique.

Origin of Ninjutsu

edit

Ninjutsu, also known as concealment. There were different theories about the origins of ninjutsu and ninjas. Some people in China believed that ninjutsu originated from the Five Elements of the Han Dynasty and later spread to Japan. Like karate, judo, and other Japanese martial arts, ninjutsu was a Japanese martial art that gradually developed after the ancient martial arts of China were spread to Japan. The authoritative book of Ninjutsu, Wan Chuan Ji Hai, pointed out: The origin of Ninjutsu came from Jiang Taigong and Lu Wang during the Yin and Zhou Dynasties. He was the one who first proposed the concept of ninjutsu and wrote it in the famous book, Six Secret Arts. Later, Sun Wu, Zhang Liang, Han Xin, and others perfected the theory of ninjutsu. In particular, Sun Wu's Art of War was highly praised by the ninjas. At this time, Ninjutsu had basically formed a prototype consisting of tactics, formation, Yin and Yang, and techniques. As ninjutsu spread to Japan, ninjas also appeared and developed in Japan.

The theoretical basis of ninjutsu was derived from Sun Tzu's Art of War, which was passed down from China to Japan. Later, it was developed by practicing Taoism and ambushing techniques in the mountains. Martial arts were naturally developed in ancient times. Every country in the world had such a process, and Japan was no exception. However, after Sun Tzu's Art of War was introduced to Japan, Japan's military thinking had a fundamental change. The general who loved to use ninjas the most, Takeda Shingen, was completely transformed by China's military thinking. Takeda Shingen was an admirer of his grandson. He admired the art of combat that his grandson first proposed," swift as the wind, slow as the forest, aggressive as fire, and unmoving as a mountain." He wrote the phrase " Wind, Forest, Volcano " on his military flag, so his troops were called " Wind, Forest, Volcano " troops.

Shingen hated having his country's secrets known by others, so he liked to train ninjas. He loved to command the ninjas that he had trained (he called them the "ninjas" of the Chaotic Wave Family). The origin of the "chaotic waves" came from the vagrants and unemployed people in the three places of Jia, Xin, and Yue, or the bandit group organized them and taught them mountain warfare and other combat skills, so they became ninjas. In addition,"Sanzhe" was the general term for "Jianjian","Fangfang", and "Mufu". These people were experts in scouts and spies. Shingen sent Tomita Village's Saemon to control the ninjas.

During the Warring States Period in Japan, the vassals all over the country tried to unify Japan and replace the emperor. Takeda Shingen had won many major battles, and the Takeda family was once extremely powerful. Of course, they had also made countless enemies. Takeda Shingen's younger brother, Takeda Shingen, accidentally discovered a thief who looked very similar to his brother, so he kept him by his side as a substitute. In Japanese tradition, they called him a " shadow warrior." Following that, Takeda Shingen fought against Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Legend had it that he was unfortunately killed in battle, but in fact, he died of excessive alcohol and sex and died of illness. However, his son was not a great man, so Takeda Shingen decided to let the " shadow warrior " go to the battlefield. He would assist and support him from the side, buying time for Takeda Shingen's son to gain experience in ruling. After he became mature, he would hand over the regime to him. The 'shadow samurai' had not changed from being a thief to being moved by Takeda Nobukado's righteous act and did his best.

During the Heian period, due to the rise of the samurai class, the art of ambushing in the mountains was developed by samurai. During the Genhei Era, Geniyoshi Sutra, who had learned how to ambush in the mountains, successfully used the skill of ambush in the mountains and completed the theory of attack tactics. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Nanmu was developing the art of war on the defensive side. At the same time, ninjutsu and martial arts were separated into different systems.

Ninjutsu School

edit

During the Warring States Period, ninjutsu began to make great progress, because this era was in great need of ninjutsu, martial arts, and military strategy. However, unlike the art of war and martial arts, ninjutsu had its own uniqueness. In the areas where ninjutsu was developed, there were several schools of ninjutsu, which were named after the following places:

Musashi, Jiapei, Yuehou, Xinnong, etc.

Yihe, Jiahe, Jiyi, etc.

Among them, the ninjutsu of the last three states was the most developed in Japan.

Ninjutsu Books

edit

Iga and Kaga were very close to the capital, and the terrain was a small basin surrounded by mountains and dangers. Although it was barren, it was close to the central region of Japan, so its strategic position was very important. Due to the deep influence of Kyoto culture, there were many shrines, monasteries, and manors in these two places. When the manor system collapsed, the rich people rose one by one. During the Warring States Period, this small piece of land was actually inhabited by sixty local tycoons. Because the territory was very small, if he wanted to strengthen himself, he had to compete with others. Therefore, each family began to train 30 to 40 men of sacrifice to deal with the "enemy country". The competition here was more intense than anyone could imagine. The tycoons formed an alliance with each other hypocritically, secretly spying on each other, and once they seized the opportunity, they would mercilessly attack their opponents. These two bloody mountains, which were full of cruelty and cunning, gradually evolved into the base camp for the development of ninjutsu. Iga and Kaga's greatest contribution to the ninja industry was to systematically formulate the theoretical basis and skills of ninja, and compiled a ninja's practice book,"Ten Thousand Rivers Gathering Sea." Even though the ninjas were of different schools, the classic book that they practiced was called " Thousand Rivers Gathering Sea ". The content of this book was to teach ninjas all the theoretical foundations and technical guidance on how to perform ninjutsu.

In the year 1676, the fourth year of the Tokugawa family's reign, the hermit Fujiashi Hotake combined the thoughts and martial arts essence of the famous generals of Japan and other countries, and wrote a ninja's ultimate practice guide that integrated ninja, ninjutsu, and ninjutsu. He also named the book "Wan Chuan Ji Hai." Just as the title of the book suggested," Ten Thousand Rivers Gathering in the Sea " meant that the sea contained all rivers and took the essence of various schools.

"Wan Chuan Ji Hai" is composed of six parts: Zhengxin, Jiangzhi, Yinren, Yangren, Tianshi, and Ninjutsu. This book became a must-read textbook for ninjas. The Six Tactics and The Art of War were two ancient works that had a deep influence on the development of Ninjutsu. It could be seen that the military martial arts thoughts of ancient China laid a solid theoretical foundation for the development of Japanese Ninjutsu in the future. This was the evidence that Ninjutsu originated from China. It could be said that the Ten Thousand Rivers and Seas was a summary of the Japanese's study of the essence of ancient Chinese military and the cultivation of secret techniques.

Ninjutsu Theory

edit

Many of the early ninjas were born as poor farmers, not warriors of noble status. Due to the requirements of the mission, they generally did not use formal martial arts to fight with the enemy. Instead, they used ninjutsu that emphasized that they would do anything to achieve their goals. The theoretical basis of the so-called ninjutsu was mainly based on Sun Tzu's Art of War, which was introduced to Japan from the Chinese Empire, coupled with the four-character maxim of " Wind, Forest, Volcano." Then, with the addition of cultivation and ambush techniques in the mountains, it developed into a complete ninjutsu. As for the ambush techniques in the mountains, they mainly came from the experience of the indigenous people living in Yamato, Yoshino, Kurama, Neto, and Iga. The spells used in ninjutsu originated from the mountains of the Buddhist Tantras such as Takano near Kyoto. Most of the martial arts techniques in ninjutsu came from the Yagyu Ryu Sword Sect and the Treasure House's Ryu Gun Technique. During the Heian period, the art of war was developed by the samurai class, which was the rise of ambushes in the mountains. During the Genhei era, Genyikyo, who had learned how to ambush in the mountains, had successfully used this technique and completed the theory of attacking the surface. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Nanmu was developing a defensive strategy. From then on, ninjutsu and martial arts were officially separated into different systems. During the Warring States Period, ninjutsu had made great progress. Because in this chaotic era, the famous people everywhere needed ninjutsu, martial arts, and military tactics for their own wars. The so-called above there are good people, below there are people like clouds. At the same time, due to the introduction of technology from outsiders and the increase in the number of craftsmen, ninjas could engage in spying with the skills of many folk craftsmen. Therefore, the ninja industry flourished.

Ninjutsu Martial Arts

edit

The martial arts of ninjutsu came from the Yagyu Ryu Sword Sect and the Gun-style of the Treasure House. However, the ninjas made great improvements to these martial arts, making them suitable for short knives and short guns, so that they were suitable for fighting in narrow places.

Legend and Reality

edit

Ninjas were both samurai and assassins, trained in Japanese ninjutsu (the technique of covert operations). The term "ninja" could be traced back to the Edo period. Like the Japanese Bushido and samurai, ninjas followed a set of special rules (ninjutsu) that they were proud of. Contrary to what many people thought, many ninjas specialized in spying rather than assassination.

Many myths and legends were about ninjas, who appeared during the Sengoku period of Japan and often carried out secret missions for the daimyo or feudal nobles. It was not until the Tokugawa shogunate officially incorporated it into its ranks that it entered its most prosperous era.

Ninjutsu was often divided into many forms such as Yin Ninjutsu and Yang Ninjutsu. Yin Ninja emphasized stealth and sneaking into the enemy's interior to spy or sabotage, while Yang Ninja emphasized using wisdom to win in public.

Because of the change of regime in China, a new dynasty was established. The loyal officials of the original emperor could not survive in China, so they migrated to Japan, which had been in contact with China for more than 2000 years. These people had a very low social status in Japan and could only engage in some crafts that the Japanese were unwilling to engage in, such as making pottery, armor, and clothing. These people were called tribal people, and there were the most people during the Ming Dynasty. The tribe was the Japanese name for the "human circle" that imprisoned the Chinese when Japan invaded China and implemented the No Man's Zone. These Ming Dynasty immigrants usually settled in the capital, and then some people moved to the nearby Iga or Kaga to work. In addition, they also used some of the technology they brought with them, such as gunpowder. Other craftsmen also took root here, such as craftsmen, doll masters... All kinds of artists came... Therefore, there were many such people in the Iga and Kaga areas, and in the future, ninjas could engage in intelligence work with the skills of many folk craftsmen.

In addition, some North Koreans also received the same treatment as the Chinese. There were many foreigners and naturalized people (foreigners who became Japanese and changed their surnames to Japanese).

For example, in the early days of the Tokugawa shogunate, because Hattori Hanzo worked with Ieyasu, many people from Iga and Kaga moved to Edo with Hattori. Ji-chou was the transformation of Iga and Kaga-chou. There was also the name of Hanzomon (the old house where Hattori Hanzou lived). It was said that Hattori Hanzo was a transformed person. Because he had settled in Japan, he changed his surname to Hattori in order to integrate with the local area. From then on, the Hattori family was born.

At that time, the Japanese war was extremely fierce and urgently needed information. However, the so-called orthodox samurai would not engage in such sneaky behavior. The Japanese samurai believed that such a difficult and shameful thing should be done by the lower class. Moreover, Japanese martial arts at that time was only suitable for two people to stand in a position and chop off each other's heads. The Japanese Kendo practice method that everyone can see now was not suitable for them. The ambush in the mountains and the unconventional battles in various terrains were not suitable for them. Therefore, this special job was done by the lowest class of Japanese society at that time.
