In 2011, in the preface to my book, The Village by the Riverside, I said," In the 1990s, I started writing. In the ten years from 1986 to 1996, I wrote seven notebooks. Since the 21st century, I have started to organize these notebooks. So far, I have only finished organizing three notebooks, which is The Village by the Riverside." There are three more books, I will continue to organize them."
The Village in the Sea in front of me is the result of my two years of work. In fact, the story in this book is all about my life experience as a marine in the 1960s and 1970s. I don't have the ability to make up stories, and I lack the rich imagination of the author of Journey to the West. Therefore, the things I wrote were basically the real things that I experienced. Why was it called 'Village in the Sea'?
It turns out that my hometown, Xiawang Village, is a village on the north bank of the Bohai Sea. It is very close to the sea. When he was young, he followed the adults to the seaside to catch crabs. After walking for a day, he was very tired. In the evening, he sat on the seawall to rest. The sea in front of him was vast, and the thin waves rolled on the surface of the sea. Looking far away, there was a village in the water. He could not see the houses, only the green trees.
On the surface of the sea outside the village, a small boat with white sails was flying freely on the sea like a butterfly with its wings spread. So charming, so fascinating. I looked at it in a daze and felt very strange. Why was there a village in the sea? What did the village look like? What kind of food did people eat and what kind of houses did they live in? Later, I wrote a poem:
The Village in the Sea
When I was young,
Follow the adults to the seaside,
Sitting on the seawall in the evening,
Look at the vast sea.
There is a village in the water,
The trees were hidden.
Fluttering butterflies,
It was like a small boat sailing on the sea.
I really want to cross the sea
Look at the village in the sea.
Look at the houses where people live,
The school where the children studied.
Where can I play?
Where can I sing?
Ah!
But I have no wings to fly,
A vast sea,
How do I get there?
A few years later, I joined the army and came to Ocean Island. The mountains were high and the forests were dense. The sky was blue and the sea was blue. The fish and prawns were plump and delicious. The birds were singing and the flowers were fragrant. It was truly a village in the sea. Ah! My childhood dream.
I served at sea for six years and spent most of my time on Ocean Island. In the stormy sea, the sailors patrolled and stood guard for the motherland. Groups of soldiers sacrificed their youth on the island, and some even sacrificed their lives. Those years of battle were something to be proud of and reminisced about.
Some of the stories in the book didn't take place on Ocean Island, but they were things that I did before I went to Ocean Island or before I went to Ocean Island. It wasn't far-fetched to count them as a village in the sea.
This book is dedicated to the political commissar, Sergeant Zhou Zhifu, Guan Hemin, and his comrades who have been to Ocean Island.

New Year's Day had just passed. The sky was clear and the sun was shining brightly in the ancient city of Luanzhou. However, it was still winter. The north wind blew on the ground, making people feel cold. There were many people gathered outside the gate of the old county government in Luan County. There were men and women, old and young. They looked in from the gate. The new recruits had already changed into their uniforms, and an officer was forming a team. Then, he led a blue team out of the county office and walked on the street. Both sides of the street were filled with people watching the show. Many of them were family members who were sending the recruits off. To Ah Hui, all the people who sent her off were strangers. Because his home was a hundred miles south of the county town, no one would come. Therefore, he kept his eyes on the team and kept walking forward. However, the moment they exited the north gate, they saw Feng Zai and Feng Lin in the crowd. During the Great Leap Forward, they left their homes to work in the county's coke factory. Knowing that Ah Hui was leaving today and would definitely pass through the north gate, they specially ran over from class to see her off. Seeing her brother, Ah Hui's heart felt warm, and tears flowed out. However, everyone kept walking forward and could not stop to talk. Ah Hui could only look at them and wave her hand, signaling for them to go back. The team was all blue, and their steps were not very neat. If they weren't led by an officer, you wouldn't believe that they were soldiers.
That officer was the officer who had gone to Luan County to pick up the new recruits. He was tall, had a straight back, and had a pair of sharp eyes on his oval face, which highlighted his heroic handsomeness. The team left the north gate of the ancient city of Luan County. The young officer subconsciously looked back. The north gate was tall and majestic, simple and magnificent. The words "North Gate" on the top of the door were bold and powerful, especially eye-catching. The tall and spacious city gate and the steady and heavy city wall were solemn and dignified. Thinking back to a month ago, he was ordered to come to Luan County to receive soldiers and also entered the city from the north gate. From then on, the ancient city of Luanzhou, the city gates, and the antique buildings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties on the streets had left a deep impression on him. As a naval officer, he had been to many places along the coast and in the mainland. However, Luanzhou, the sacred land of the Ancient Bamboo Nation and the hometown of Yi and Qi, made him feel like he had traveled through history.
The mission to pick up new recruits was completed very smoothly. Due to the importance and support of the local government, the 50 marines he accepted had the best physical conditions and cultural qualities. Ten of them were students from Luanxian No.1 Middle School. In the past, when high school students didn't recruit soldiers, they made a great leap forward in everything. When they returned to the army, the commanders would definitely be satisfied. He felt very happy just thinking about it. His footsteps became more energetic. Sometimes, he would turn around and look at the team behind him." Keep up, don't widen the distance," he said loudly.
This blue team had the same clothes and backpacks. Although they hadn't gone through any training and didn't walk very neatly, they were a team full of vitality. It was just that with Ah Hui, she would sometimes put some distance between them. The officer took a look. It turned out that everyone else had the same backpack, but Ah Hui was carrying a large square bag on her shoulder. " What is it?" the officer thought. He approached Ah Hui and said,"What are you carrying?"”
Ah Hui's forehead was dripping with sweat as she said," Book, my book.”
The officer found it strange. The recruits were all given the same things and dressed the same way, so their actions could be consistent. If they brought too many things with them, the burden would be too heavy, and it would be difficult to maintain consistent actions. So he said," Why did you bring so many things? It's quite heavy."
" It's not heavy when I bring it to study," Ah Hui said as she walked.
The officer regretted not having thought of this situation beforehand. It would have been better if he had said that he was not allowed to bring anything else. Since things had come to this, he could only accept it. Seeing that he was struggling, she said,"I'll carry it for you for a while."”He snatched the white package from Ah Hui's shoulder. It weighed more than ten catties.
After walking for a while, Ah Hui felt bad and insisted on snatching it back. "Give it to me, I can handle it."
Ah Hui had been studying since he was young. Although his brother was still in the army and his father worked in the army, he had never been to the army and did not understand the life in the army. Even though he was in the army, he still wanted to study. He thought that he would study in the army. He had brought along his high school textbooks, the four classics he liked, and the excellent novels published in 1958," Song of Youth,"" Forest of Snowfields," and so on. He was prepared to continue reading them in the army. He knew that he was only a first-year high school student and had many books to read. There was a lot of knowledge to learn. There was no end to learning. Only by constantly learning could one continuously improve and improve.
"What's there to learn after becoming a soldier? Why would he bring those books when he was already a soldier?”Ah Hui had heard a lot of these words. Ah Hui didn't dare to say that she was wrong, but they didn't understand Ah Hui's heart. Ah Hui joined the army not because she had read enough, but because she wanted to study better. During the Great Leap Forward, he had to work every day, and he couldn't go to school anymore.
Not far from the north gate of Luanzhou, when Ah Hui felt the burden on his shoulders getting heavier and heavier, he suddenly realized that he had embarked on a new path in life.
At noon, they arrived at the Tang Shan Locomotives Factory. In a huge factory, there were many new recruits like Ah Hui and the others. In the evening, the government and the military division of the city held a party to welcome the new recruits. The farewell party was held at the South Chamber Club. The leaders of the city, the head of the Tang Shan military division, and the recruit representative all spoke. Finally, it was acting, Beijing opera, and Pingju. Hong Ying and Fan Jinting both appeared. At midnight, the recruits boarded the train from the train station. It was dark outside the truck, and the lights inside were dim. In his haziness, he saw many people standing on the platform outside the carriage. They were there to send their loved ones off. He could only feel the train shaking as it slowly left Tang Shan. He didn't know where it was going.
When Ah Hui was in the tank, her mother couldn't sleep for some reason. He tossed and turned on the brick bed. After a while, he suddenly had a toothache. They couldn't eat during the day and couldn't sleep at night. At his peak, he couldn't even sit still on the brick bed. He went out and walked around the manor, round and round…
Her face was swollen from the toothache. When Zhang Ruilan's family saw this, they asked," What's wrong with Second Grandmother? Your face is so swollen that it doesn't look like it."
"It's nothing. I just have a toothache."
You miss your son, right?"
No, I don't miss them. For some reason, my teeth hurt."
"I'm still suffering from internal heat. That's true. My second uncle is studying well. Why should he be a soldier? Yesterday, when I went to smash the millstone and walked to Uncle Zhang Fengchi's house, people were discussing it. Second Master Zhang Qingguo said that our village had lost a well-educated person this time. Ah Hui was so smart that she would have no problem getting into any university in the future. If she went to the army, what great achievements would she have? It would be a waste. Zhang Fengdian's second uncle also said that that kid really shouldn't go. If Old Master Zhang Qingfeng was at home, he might not let him go. The old lady was muddle-headed, so what did it matter? If he wanted to go, then so be it. It was a pity that a good material could go with everything!”Zhang Ruilan paused for a moment before she continued," That's true. My second uncle is in North Korea, and my uncle is also a soldier. Why did you ask my second uncle to go?”
His mother was stunned. After a long time, he said,"It's right to say that I don't care." They had grown up and had their own ideas. What do I know about the outside world? I can't tell if it's good to go or not. Let them be!"
As her mother spoke, she kept covering her face with her hands. Zhang Ruilan's family member said," What's wrong? Does your tooth still hurt?”
"It hurts. I pulled out one, but the next one still hurts. I pulled it out again, but it still hurts.”That month, her mother had four teeth pulled out.

Officer Li appeared in the carriage with his troops. Although the carriage was shaking, he stood firmly. She stood upright without holding anything and spoke loudly. He said that he was a cadre at the navy's Lushun base. " From the moment we put on our military uniforms, we have all become navy soldiers. Now the train is speeding towards Lushun. Tomorrow afternoon, we will arrive at Lushun Pass." He also said that it was now night time, so everyone should pay attention to safety. Don't move around in the carriage and you can sleep.
When they left the school, everyone was still in a daze. They knew that they might be traveling far, but no one knew where they were going. Li Lingbing's words relieved everyone's doubts about where they were going and calmed them down. She studied geography and history in school. Ah Hui knew that Lushun was a military port and a strategic location. Lushun was the main battlefield of the 1894 - 1895 War and the Russo-Japanese War. Japan surrendered in 1945, the Soviet Union occupied it for another 10 years, and it was only returned to China in 1955. Some people said," Lushunkou is the modern history of the Celestial Dynasty." At this moment, the train was roaring and speeding towards that place. Ah Hui's heart was very uneasy. He yearned for that place.
It was late at night. Looking out of the small window, it was pitch-black. Occasionally, some lights would fly backward. The car rocked and rumbled. At some point, Ah Hui had fallen asleep. It was not until a loud bang that Ah Hui was jolted awake. The train slowly came to a stop as the sky brightened. It was morning at Jinzhou Station. The recruits, who had been sitting in the carriage for the whole night, were all fighting to peek out of the small windows on both sides of the carriage, curiously looking at the important town in western Liaoning. Ah Hui was on the upper deck of the carriage. In front of him was a window. He pushed the iron plate up, and a cold wind immediately rushed in. So cold! The novels " Forest of Snowy Lands " and " Legend of Hulan River " had descriptions of the freezing cold wind in the northeast. Many people in his hometown had traveled through the east of the country, and his father himself had also gone to the spring in Hei Long Jiang. In the early 1950s, Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Qingzun went to Tieling, Liaoning. Because they hadn't been gone for long. When Ah Hui was young, her parents and family often talked about them and missed them.‘Lan Tou and Ou Zi were the two sisters who followed Daren to the east of the country. Father and mother often mentioned their names. Therefore, Ah Hui had yearned to go beyond the Great Wall since she was young. It was said that it was very cold in the east of the country, but reading a novel did not mean that one was in the real world, and listening to others did not mean that one saw it with one's eyes. The wind blowing from the small window made Ah Hui feel the cold air in the east of the country. The wind was blowing right at his face, like a knife cutting him. He had never felt such a feeling in his twenty years in the pass. But Jinzhou was not the end of this trip. " If we go further north, it will definitely be colder," Ah Hui thought. Jinzhou was the main battlefield of the Liaoshen Battle. The famous Battle of Tashan took place here. In the village, Zhang Fengbiao, Zhang Fengge, Xia Junshi, Xia Changzhong, and Xia Changmu had all fought here. When he was young, Gou Fu sang opera. Before the official performance, there was a line sung by Qingyi Dahuozi: " Passing Qinghuangdao, arriving at Shanhaiguan, passing Xingcheng, Jinzhou is a big station, passing Goutangzi is Dahu Mountain, and Xinmin is not far from Fengtian." This was the route that the people from her hometown took to break through the east of the country. It was very clear in Ah Hui's memory. Now that they were in Jinzhou, why not take a good look? Outside the window, a tall black tower protruded from a cluster of buildings. There was a street below the tower, extending from low to high. Perhaps it was the time to go to work, but the cars and people on the street flowed like a river. The railway tracks in the station were laid out one after another. It was no wonder that the ditch government said that Jinzhou was a big station. The platform and tracks were covered with a layer of snow. When the car stopped, no one came out. Half an hour later, a few railway workers came out with big caps. There was also a woman in work clothes. They were here to deliver breakfast. The men were delivering bread to each other. The woman carried a bucket of water. Whenever she reached a carriage, she would call out at the door," Drink some water, water." When the recruits heard the shouts, they took the tea jars and got out of the car to fetch water. The girl was in her twenties. She was tall and had thick black hair. She had two thick braids that reached her shoulders. The half-new and half-worn work clothes looked very fitting on her. Her slightly red face showed her youthful beauty. She was the first girl from the east of the country to appear in the eyes of the recruits. Her beauty and passion made the hot-blooded young men in the carriage who had dedicated themselves to national defense feel proud.
After drinking the water and eating the bread, the train started to shake again. The sky was already bright. The sunlight came in through the small window and brightened up the car. Ah Hui leaned against the window, ignoring the cold wind. She curiously looked at the rotating northeast outside the window. Ice and snow, yellow withered grass, mountains, trees, and villages flashed past his eyes. In an open field, a large river was covered in ice and snow. There were cattle and sheep grazing, and a lonely shepherd stood on the snow. Ah, our stuffy pot is flying over the land of Kanto. This was a magical land. A few hundred years ago, the Ming and Qing dynasties had fought here. Nurhachi, Huang Taiji, Yuan Chonghuan, and Hong Chengtao had played out stories that shook history, and the recent Liaoshen Battle was even more fresh in people's minds.,
After a while, Li Lingbing stood up at the door and said loudly,"We are currently driving on the battlefield of the Liaoshen Battle. The Battle of Liaoyang lasted from November 2 to December 22, 1948, lasting 52 days. At the cost of 690,000 casualties, the Northeast Field Army wiped out 4.72 million people from the National Army and captured 186 senior officers above the rank of major general. He had liberated the entire northeast and created decisive conditions for the victory of the Pingjin Battle and the liberation of the entire country.”When the recruits heard this, they were all shocked by the fighting spirit of their seniors.
"Company Commander, did you participate in the Liaoshen Battle?”A young recruit whispered to Li Lingbing. "Yes, but I was just like you at that time. I just joined the army and didn't make any contributions. Our class monitor played well and became a war hero.”Li Lingbing said embarrassedly. When Ah Hui heard this, she looked at Li Lingbing attentively and felt that he had suddenly become taller. Ah Hui thought, several people in the village had fought in Jinzhou. Would he know them? Hence, he also came forward and asked,"Do you know Xia Changzhong from our village?"
"I don't know him."
"Where's Xia Changmu?"
"I don't know him."
"Zhang Fengge, Zhang Fengwang."
"I don't know him either."
Ah Hui said," They all fought in Jinzhou." Everyone laughed. Li Lingbing said," There are many people attacking Jinzhou. There are 100,000 troops. Apart from the squad, he didn't know any of the companies because there were many new recruits.”
In Ah Hui's heart, Xia Changmu, Xia Changzhong, and Zhang Fengge were all heroes of Xia Manor. During the most difficult years of the War of Resistance against Japan, they left their homes, their wives, children, and parents to go to the front lines of the war. During the three years of the War of Liberation, Xia Changzhong and Zhang Fengge had been fighting the enemy on the front line. They only returned to China after the Korean Armistice in 1953. Xia Changzhong returned home and became an ordinary farmer until his death. In 1958, when the Chinese People's Revolutionary Army withdrew from North Korea, Xia Changmu returned to China and participated in the self-defense counterattack between China and India. Li Lingbing actually didn't know them, which made Ah Hui a little disappointed.
Meng Fanrong and Wang Jinshan were classmates of Ah Hui. When they saw Ah Hui guarding the small window, they all came over." Your place is still better. We can see the scenery outside."”Therefore, the three of them went to the small window and looked out. The trees and rivers outside were flashing and flying backward. It was the second day after they left school. The shaking of the train woke Ah Hui up from her dream. She suddenly realized that she was no longer a student. In the past, when they were in the classroom every day, they didn't feel the preciousness of student time at all. Now that they were on the train, they finally realized the preciousness of student life. After he left, he would never have the time to study with his classmates again! At this moment, Ah Hui remembered what her classmate Yang Ruiqing had said. Not long ago, he had been selected to work in the national civil aviation department. Everyone thought that it was a good thing. He was happy, and others were envious. However, after he left the school, he wrote a letter to Ah Hui, saying that he regretted it and asked Ah Hui to cherish the time she spent studying and not leave the school. Ah Hui didn't understand at that time. When Yang was in school, he was also a little tired of studying. Why did he change after leaving? At this moment, Ah Hui understood Yang Ruiqing. It turned out that she and Yang Ruiqing were in the same mood now.
The tank shook, and Ah Hui's heart couldn't help but return to the classroom. Listening to the teacher and doing homework with her classmates. He had a notebook by his side, so he picked it up and flipped through it. Meng Fanrong said," What are you looking at?"
Tang Xiangrong gave me the notebook."
"What did he write? Can I see it?”
Ah Hui handed it to him. Meng Fanrong said,"Tang Xiangrong is really interesting." He also gave me a copy. But it's not as good as yours. Your relationship is still deep!
"Come, let me take a look. What's written?”Wang Jinshan said. He took the laptop from Meng Fanrong. Actually, he also had a notebook given by his classmate. After reading it, he said," Who else gave you a souvenir?”
Ah Hui said that she didn't have any more. She was too embarrassed to show them the gifts given by her female classmates.
"Su Shuyuan and Song Xiumei didn't give you anything?”
"No, I haven't."
"I don't believe it. Your essay described them so well, praised them, and sang praises of them.”
Ah Hui's face turned red. Not long ago, he wrote an essay in school," Under the Moonlight." It described the story of the students of Class One, Grade One, Luanxian County No.1 Middle School fighting at night and pulling a cart to transport coal from the railway station during the Great Leap Forward. The Chinese teacher, Zhang Qian, gave a very good evaluation and used it as a model for the class. Su Shuyuan and Song Xiumei were the protagonists of the story. However, the person being praised did not necessarily understand the person praising them. It was normal for them not to give any words.
