HP pencil and carpenter pencil

Pencils are consumable stationery that we often use in our studies and work. When we were primary school students, our parents bought and sharpened them for us and put them into our pencil boxes. The pencil boxes were then equipped with a pencil sharpener. Sharpening is a basic skill that we often use as students. It is almost a necessary skill for those who have been students. He had never heard of a student who didn't know how to sharpen a pencil.

It was this ordinary HH pencil that left a deep imprint in the depths of my soul during my apprenticeship. It was on a Monday morning, not long after work. The section chief, Master Yang, had to go to the workshop office for a meeting. Before he left, he hurriedly looked at me and walked out of the door of the model room without saying anything.

As usual, I was using a plane to push a small wooden board in the model room. The material staff in the workshop came to my workbench, took out dozens of pens, neatly placed them on my workbench, and asked me to sign for them immediately.

I looked at the person in front of me in confusion. I had never seen this person before, let alone know him. I didn't know why he was looking for me. I looked at him and nodded without saying anything.

Master Liu Jiagui, who was beside him, stood up and quickly introduced him,"This is the material worker in the workshop." He's here to give us a pencil today. Master Yang needs to sign for it."

I continued and asked softly,"These are all for Master Yang, right?”

The materialist nodded and replied seriously,""Yes."

I said,"Since it's going to be handed over to Master Yang, it should be signed and accepted by Master Yang."”

The material-collecting staff smiled and replied,"What you said is reasonable, but according to an unwritten rule in the factory, if the master is not around, the disciple can sign for the master.”

I had to say,"I'm really sorry. Master Yang didn't tell me that I could sign on his behalf." I can't sign for it. I'm sorry, Master."

The materialist looked at me and nodded without saying anything. She turned around and walked to the opposite side of my work desk. She stopped in front of Master Yang's work desk. He had probably already determined that I was Master Yang's disciple, so he was very polite to me. However, he could already tell that I was also determined to insist on it and would definitely not sign and accept it on behalf of him. Therefore, he sat down on a long wooden bench in front of Master Yang's work desk and talked to me about the mountains and seas. He was very enthusiastic and kept talking to me. He had already put on a stance that he would not give up until he achieved his goal.

I'm new here, an apprentice who just joined the factory. I don't understand the relationship between this material worker and Master Yang for a while. I'm afraid that I might offend him, so I definitely can't be too sure. However, I insisted on not signing it. He just sat there and insisted on not leaving. Just like that, the two sides went into battle. At this moment, Master Yang returned and glanced at the material worker. The materialist immediately stood up from the wooden bench.

Master Yang came to the workbench and randomly picked a pencil from the pile on the table. He held it in his hand and looked at it before putting it back. He said unhappily,"I was only away for a while, and you took advantage of the loophole to come here and bully an honest person.”

The materialist smiled." Master Yang, what are you talking about? Who dares to bully your people?"”

Master Yang waved his hand and interrupted the material worker."What kind of pencil did you bring us?”

" Hm," the materialist answered with a smile.

Master Yang raised his voice."Take a good look for yourself. Take a closer look, this is not a HH, it is a 6H. Your pencil isn't for our model room. It should be for the technicians of the factory department to draw. You're in this line of work, so you should know that the pencil used by the wood molder is all from the HH.”

The materials clerk took a pencil and looked at it. He stuck out his tongue and made a face helplessly, unable to say anything. Then, he picked up all the pens he had brought and looked at them carefully. He patted the back of his head with his hand and smiled self-deprecatingly.

He said embarrassedly,"Master Yang, this time, we might have really made a mistake. However, please make do with it this time." I dare to guarantee to Leader Mao that this will not happen again.”

Master Yang's tone was very firm. He said firmly,"No, I can't. You have to change it all to HH. Otherwise, I won't accept it." The material clerk suddenly muttered something in a low voice, while putting away all the pens he brought into his military satchel. He glared at Master Yang and stepped out of the model room without looking back.

After the materials worker left, Master Yang turned around and said to me seriously,"Do you understand? Here, you have to learn how to get a pencil. You have to remember what kind of pencil you should get and what kind of pencil you shouldn't get. Just now, you were right not to sign for him. If I want you to sign it in the future, I'll definitely tell you. You don't have to care about what others say. You shouldn't have signed it. You can't sign it no matter what. You have to stick to your principles. There are no rules."

Master Yang then told me that the three labels, HH, H, and B, all refer to the hardness of the pencil lead: The HH was moderate in hardness and softness. It is most suitable for us wood molders to draw lines on the surface of wood.

H1 to H61-6 referred to their hardness grades. The H6 was the hardest type of pencil and was suitable for drawing lines on paper. It was usually reserved for technicians to draw. This kind of pen core was not easy to leave ink marks on the surface of wood. To put it bluntly, it was a line drawn on wood. The color was too light, and it was difficult for the human eye to see the line. He couldn't work.

B-type refills were usually used by artists who drew. For example, a painter. From B1 to B6, there were roughly six levels. The B6 was the softest type of pencil.

After a few days, the material clerk brought a few boxes of carpentry pencil. It just so happened that Master Yang was in the model room. I was busy twisting a few wooden screws on a model. When I heard Master Yang call me, I quickly put down my work and came to Master Yang.

Master Yang opened the four boxes of carpentry pencil and checked a few of them. He called me to him and asked me to recheck. After careful inspection, the brand and quantity of the pencil were consistent with the data on the material list. He said to Master Yang,"The number and quantity are correct."”

Then, he put it back in the same way as before, covered it, and stood to the side.

Master Yang told me,"You can sign for him this time."”

I asked in confusion," How can this pencil be flat? I've never seen a pencil with such a flat shape. Are these things right?"”

Master Yang smiled and explained," This time, he was right. Woodworking pencil is flat. It's a special pencil for the convenience of carpentry. You might not have seen it before. He would use it often in the future. When cutting materials on the woodworking machine, for the convenience of operation, the carpenter often stuck the pencil to his ear. When he was working, it was impossible not to sweat. As long as his head was sweating, the round pencil would fall off easily. This flat pencil with an oval cross-section was stuck on the ear and would not fall off easily.”

After I signed the list, the material clerk picked it up. After looking at it carefully, he raised his hand to salute me and said,"Thank you."”He left the workshop chief, Master Yang's workbench, and stepped out of the door of the model room.

After the materials clerk left, Master Yang took out a carpenter's pencil and handed it to me. He asked me to sharpen it. I took the pencil and found a student's pencil sharpener from my work desk calendar. I sharpened the pencil according to the school's sharpening method. Master Yang picked up a plane from the workbench, turned it over and placed it on the workbench. Then he took back the pencil from my hand, picked up one end of the pencil, and gently scraped the end of the pencil on the iron mouth of the plane. The pencil was sharpened. The lead on the sharpened pencil head was also flat, leaving a short flat blade.

Master Yang told me,"A pencil needs to be sharpened like this to be used by a carpenter." The way you students sharpen a pencil is different from how a carpenter sharpens a pencil. The same pencil was sharpened, but the use was different. The sharpening method and the result were also different.”

I looked at him with some doubts. Master Yang took out another pencil and handed it to me. He asked me to sharpen it according to the method I usually used. I'll give it to him after I'm done. Master Yang took the carpenter pencil he had just sharpened and set out on a large wooden board. He told me,"In order to ensure the precision and accuracy of the process size, the lead of the pencil must have a sharp edge. Using this sharp edge to lay out the lines on the wooden board can improve their accuracy.”

Then, he used the pencil that he had sharpened with the carpenter's method to draw a straight line on the wooden sample. Then, he used the student's method that I had sharpened to draw a straight line on the same part to make it overlap. As expected, because the pencil lead had a sharp edge and the pencil lead did not have a sharp edge, the thickness of the line drawn by the two types of pencil with two sharpening methods was different.

At this time, Master Yang put down the two pens in his hand and said to me meaningfully,"Did you see it clearly? One of the two pencil leads had a sharp edge, while the other had no sharp edge. The thickness of the line drawn was different. Due to the difference in the thickness of the pencil, it would definitely affect the accuracy of the line. If there was a problem with the end of the line, it would definitely affect the production effect of the work piece. We are the first process. If we have a problem, the subsequent processes will definitely have problems. In the end, the products that leave the factory will definitely not be qualified.”

Master Yang's words left a deep impression in my heart. It has almost become my motto in my decades of work.

Master Yang also told me that any job can't be separated from data. The data is fake, and it's more terrible than no data. We hope Ning doesn't have the data. Never fake data. Because you don't know how fake the data is, you have to check every piece of data. If you have time to recheck, why don't you recheck the data? This was more reliable.

I have always adhered to strict requirements and scientific working methods, as well as a serious and responsible work style. It was all inseparable from Master Yang's words and deeds. In the following decades of work, I always adhered to the attitude of seeking truth from facts, no matter where I was and what I did. He had always insisted on high accuracy. He had strict requirements. He didn't lie.

One afternoon two weeks later, half an hour before we got off work, the party branch secretary of the workshop walked quickly to our model room and directly found the section chief, Master Yang, and whispered a few words. Master Yang immediately raised his head and shouted to everyone in the workshop,"Everyone, stop what you're doing. Gather at my place immediately for a short meeting.”
