In October 1975, my old section chief gave me a task. He wanted me to take a truck to the town of Pengxian County in Sichuan Province to pick up the goods. The location was an agricultural machinery repair shop on Pengxian Street. The task was very simple. It was to pull back all the oxygen cylinder caps that our factory had entrusted them to process.

Before we set off, Master Shang took out a stainless steel plug gauge from his drawer and placed it in my hand. He immediately taught me how to use it. He told me that I had to do a sample inspection when I picked up the goods and only pull the goods back after confirming that the products were qualified. Master Shang repeatedly reminded me,"If the spot check fails, I will not be able to pass." It was better to let go of an empty car. Remember, don't bring back anything that doesn't meet the standards.”

I put the stainless steel plug gauge into my satchel. Then, he took out the bill of delivery and other documents from his desk. I put them all into my bag and left the materials department office with the driver, Xiao Wu. In the parking lot of our factory, Xiao Wu surrounded the car and checked it from front to back. Then, he started the car.

I set off with our materials department's driver, Xiao Wu. The journey was quite smooth. The truck took an hour and a half to set off from the factory. At around 10 AM, we arrived at our destination, the main street of the town of Peng County. The car drove into the gate of the agricultural machinery repair factory. In the office of the production department of the factory, I successfully found the salesperson of the factory and showed him a letter of introduction, briefly explaining our purpose of coming.

The salesman immediately took me to the processing workshop and stopped in front of the field where a large piece of oxygen cylinder cap had been processed. Our factory ordered more than 1200 oxygen cylinder caps from this factory. They have already processed more than half of them because their site really can't hold them. Just a few days ago, they called several times to urge our factory to send people over as soon as possible to take away the oxygen cylinder caps that had been processed. It just so happens that we're going out to do something today, so the old Section Chief asked me to do this too.

As soon as he entered the workshop, he saw that the oxygen tank hats were processed quite well from a distance. At this moment, I stood in front of this pile of oxygen tank hats. I took out the plug gauge that Master Shang gave me from my satchel. I bent down and selected 40 oxygen tank hats from several different positions. He aimed at the 40 or so oxygen cylinder caps with threaded apertures and used a plug gauge to perform a rotation test. Check if the threads match.

An unexpected serious situation occurred. 70% of the products failed. I randomly selected 30 from the opposite direction of the spot check just now, but 60% of the products were still unqualified. This was a serious problem.

I remembered this morning when I left the materials department. Master Shang had repeatedly instructed that unqualified products must not be brought back to the factory. So I straightened my body and rubbed my waist. He turned around and found the salesperson from the production department. He was holding a plug gauge and an oxygen tank cap. He wanted the salesperson to see for himself.

I immediately said to the salesperson of the factory,"Brother, as you can see, most of your products are unqualified. I'm really sorry, but I can't accept this batch of goods. Hurry up and report to your factory manager. I have to rush back to the factory to report to my superior.”

With that, I walked straight out of the workshop door and found our materials department's driver, Xiao Wu.

Xiao Wu saw that I didn't intend to pick up the goods and was about to leave. He asked curiously,"Why aren't you picking up the goods?"

"I just did a spot check and found that 70% of the products were unqualified." "We can't pull such a product back. If we pull it back, neither of us can escape. We'll definitely be scolded by the leaders. I won't be the only one who will be scolded. If I can't get it off, I won't be able to do my job. I'm afraid you won't be able to escape responsibility. We can't take such goods away. We'll immediately report back to the factory. Let's not waste any more time. We'll leave immediately. Hurry up and leave."

As I said that, I got into the car. Xiao Wu started the truck. The engine of the truck started to turn, and it was already making a buzzing sound. At this moment, the driver, Xiao Wu, suddenly turned around and said to me with a smile,"Although you did the right thing today, you also caused trouble. Now, we can't escape.”

"How is that possible?" I asked Xiao Wu, puzzled.”

Xiao Wu smiled." Just watch. You'll see the results in less than three minutes."”

They arrived at the gate of the factory. The row of people was just as he predicted. Our car reversed from the workshop. As soon as we drove out, we walked on the concrete road in the factory area and turned a corner. In less than three minutes, we saw a large row of people standing in front of the big iron gate at the entrance of the factory. The gate of the factory had been firmly blocked. The salesman who met me just now stood by the roadside at the entrance. He raised his hand and gestured to us. He asked us to stop the car immediately.

The truck couldn't get out. The road was too narrow, and there was a drainage ditch on both sides. There was no way to take a detour, and we couldn't hide. We had to bite the bullet. He drove the truck to the gate of the factory and parked it on the right side.

The salesman walked over to our truck.

Then, he walked to the door of our truck and opened it. He nodded at me and said,""Our factory director wants to see you. He wants to communicate with you. Please get out of the car.”We can't do anything about it in their territory. Xiao Wu and I had no choice but to get out of the car and close the door.

The people at the gate of the factory surrounded me one after another. The salesperson introduced me to their factory manager. The factory director came up to shake my hand and greeted me warmly.

I took the opportunity to tell the factory manager about the sample inspection of the oxygen cylinder cap in the workshop and tactfully put forward my sincere criticism. At the same time, I told them that I wanted to say goodbye. When the factory manager heard this, he became anxious. He hurriedly grabbed my and the driver's arms at the same time and refused to let us go. He insisted on keeping us for dinner. He said he wanted to exchange ideas with us.

During lunch, I used an emotional and reasonable tone to describe in detail the main quality problems of their products. I fully explained the reasons for the problems. The main reason was that they did not use plug rules, but used a product to product comparison inspection: He pointed out the areas that needed to be improved. In the future, when processing, he must use the plug gauge for inspection. Moreover, even the plug gauge must be inspected. It explained why I couldn't accept this batch of goods. We also have to be responsible for the oxygen tanks produced by our factory.

The factory director stood up, looked around, and said to the responsible officials of their factory,"Did you hear that? The people from Wuye have already made it clear that our products must be reworked. Only after the products were up to standard would they be willing to inspect the goods. We have to rectify it according to the opinions of the owner.”

At this moment, the factory manager turned around and smiled at me."Look, since you're already here, I'm afraid it won't make sense if you don't take back a single product. Besides, we've processed so much. I think no matter how bad our factory's standards are, it can't be that none of them are up to standard, right? I was wondering if you could trouble yourself a little more this afternoon to pick some and bring them back so that everyone can be more accountable. Also, what do you think of the pilot?”

What should he do? At this moment, we have already eaten their food, and their factory director personally came out. Such a big factory director personally asked me to beg for help, so my heart softened and I agreed.

After lunch, we drove the car to the workshop and took out the stainless steel plug gauge that Master Shang gave me. We rotated the inner diameter threads on the oxygen cylinder caps one by one. Check if the threads match. Those that meet the requirements are selected and placed aside to be loaded. Those that do not meet the requirements are left in place.

After more than an hour, I finally picked less than 300. The driver, Xiao Wu, and the salesperson from the factory gathered the qualified products that I selected, counted them, and loaded them into the car. Then, we drove to the factory gate together. The factory manager sent someone to bring us two boxes of cylindrical colored ceramic cups with stainless steel lids, which were popular at that time. He said that we should bring them back to all the staff of our materials department and repeatedly apologize to our factory for the quality of their products. They also agreed on the next time to pick up the goods.

When we returned to the factory, it was already very late. From afar, we saw the old section chief squatting at the entrance of the factory's materials department warehouse. When he saw our car drive in, he immediately became anxious before I got out of the car. He immediately stood up, waved his big hands, and shouted at me,"What have you been doing all day! Why did you take so long to come back?"

I quickly jumped out of the car and closed the door. I turned around and went to the old section chief. I reported everything that happened today to the old section chief in detail.

The old section chief heaved a sigh of relief and said happily,"Fortunately, you were the one who went this time. If it was another material picker who went to pick up this batch of goods, I'm afraid this matter would be troublesome. But you have to find some time to call us and explain the situation first. Don't make us worry about you all the time. I'm always afraid that something will happen to you and that you will suffer.”

I nodded repeatedly and said,"I'm sorry for messing with my head today. I'll be more careful next time."”

One day in the winter of 1975, in order to meet the production needs of some alloy steel pipes, I went to the material department to apply for transfer procedures and planned to transport it back to the factory. At the materials department, I quickly completed the transfer procedures, but there were no steel pipes of this material and size in the materials department's warehouse at that time. The Material Department came forward to ask for help from Chengdu Seamless Steel Tubes Factory (then known as Factory 65). He had already contacted them over the phone. I'll bring the car to fetch it back.

Please look at the next section,"I got the wrong steel."
