"Why do you keep waking people up so early in the morning, Harry, and on Sunday?”Bangs complained.
"I'm sorry, but I can't sleep, so," said Harry.
"Is it because of what I saw last night?”Bangs asked, still wearing his clothes.
"Yes, I saw the fire dragon." said Harry.
"Let's go eat breakfast together." Bangs suggested.
"Oh, alright." said Harry.
" What? Fire Dragon?" said Hermione, looking surprised at the table.
"Yes, Fire Dragon." said Harry gloomily.
"Don't worry, Harry, I think the library has the secret to subduing dragons.”said Hermione, recovering her composure.
"I hope so." said Harry, forking his scrambled egg.
Right after breakfast, Hermione dragged Bunce and Harry to the library. Here, Hermione pulled out every book she could find on dragons, and the three of them began to search through the pile like needles in a haystack.
Hermione and Harry searched restlessly, while Bunce flipped through the books with great interest, seemingly in no hurry.
"Why don't you care about anything, Bunce?”said Hermione, seeming to notice this.
"It's not that I don't care, it's just that I'm confident." Bangs closed the book and said.
"So, you already have a way to pass through the fire dragon?”said Hermione.
"More or less." Bance said.
"Teach Harry," said Hermione.
"My method is not suitable for him. He will be taught by someone.”Bance said.
"That's easy for you to say." Harry muttered.
"Oh no, he's back again, why can't he read on his stupid ship?”said Hermione irritably, and Viktor Krum came slouching in, gave them all three a dark look, then sat down in a distant corner with a pile of books."Come on, let's go back to the common room. His fan club'll be here soon, jabbering, jabbering."
Sure enough, as they left the library, a group of girls tiptoed past them, one of them wearing a Ukrainian scarf around her waist.
The day of the competition soon arrived. The atmosphere in the school was very tense and excited. Classes were canceled at noon to give the whole school time to go down to the dragon grounds-of course, they didn't know what to expect there.
Bunce and Harry had been receiving blessings and sarcasm all day, and it was hard to say who had more. He and Harry had barely risen after lunch when they saw Professor McGonagall hurrying up the Great Hall. Many people were looking at them.
"Potter, Foley, now the champions are going down to the field and you must get ready for the first task.”
"Good luck," whispered Hermione."I'm sure you'll make it!”
"Thank you, Hermione," Bangs said with a smile.
They left the Great Hall with Professor McGonagall. Professor McGonagall looked as distraught as Harry. In fact, she was almost as anxious as Hermione. She accompanied Bunce and Harry down the stone steps and out into the open air on a cold November afternoon, and she put her hand on their shoulders.
"Well, don't get too nervous," she said."Keep your head clear. We've got some wizards around, and if things go south, they'll come forward to take control. The most important thing is to do what you can, and no one will think you're any worse than the others.”
"I'm fine," said Harry."I'm fine.”
Professor McGonagall led them around the edge of the forest toward the dragon. As they approached the patch of trees where they could have had a clear view of the grounds, Bangs saw that a large tent had been erected there, blocking the dragons, the entrance facing them.
"You'll have to go in with the other champions," said Professor McGonagall, her voice trembling."Wait for your turn." Mr. Bagman is in there, and he'll tell you the steps. Good luck.”
"Thank you." Bangs and Halic said. Professor McGonagall led them to the entrance of the tent. Bunce and Harry walked in together.
Fleur Delacour was sitting on a low wooden stool in a corner. She was not at all as composed as she usually was. She looked very pale and sickly. Viktor Krum looked gloomier than usual, which Bangs supposed was a way of showing his nervousness.
"Ah, Harry, Bunce! That's great!" Bagman looked around at them and said happily,"come in, come in, relax, make yourself at home!”
"Well, now that we're all here-it's time to brief you!”Bagman said gleefully."When the audience is gathered, I'm going to pass this sack to each of you in turn"-he held up a purple silk sack and shook it at them-"and you pick out a small model of what you're about to face! They come in different-well-varieties. I still have one more thing to tell you. By the way, your mission is to pick up the golden egg!”
In the blink of an eye, there was the sound of hundreds of feet passing the tent, the owners of the feet talking and laughing excitedly, and then-Bagman had untied the purple silk sack.
"Ladies first." he said, handing the bag to Fleur Delacour.
She put a trembling hand into the sack and pulled out a small, vivid model of a dragon-a welsh green dragon with a number tied around its neck: Number 2.
Krum pulled out the scarlet Celestial Fireball, number three tied around his neck.
Bangs reached lazily in and pulled out a silver-blue Swedish short-nosed dragon with number one tied around its neck.
Harry, looking resigned, pulled out the hungarian horntail.
"Alright, you all have it!" said Bagman." You've all drawn the dragon you're going to face, and the number on its neck is the order in which you're going to deal with the dragon, understand? Well, I'm going to leave you for a moment because I have to give an explanation to the audience. Bunce, you'll be first, and when you hear the whistle, you step into the field, will you? So, Harry, can I have a word with you? Come outside?"
Bunce watched Harry blankly follow Bagman out of the tent. All three of them were silent.
There was a whistle somewhere, and Bunce got up and walked out of the tent, leisurely passing through a gap in the fence.
He saw hundreds of faces watching him from the stands above, and on the other side of the field, the Swedish brachnosaurus was crouching low, guarding its nest of eggs.
Bang Si walked up to it excitedly and looked at the dragon carefully. The man and the dragon looked at each other. The scene was definitely not ordinary calm.
"What's he doing, I mean-does he know what he's going to do?”asked Bagman, puzzled-the audience was puzzled, too, probably.
Bangs ignored him and pulled out his wand, muttering something like a ballad.
After about five minutes, Bangs raised his wand and walked over to the nest of eggs.
"What the hell is he doing," Bagman shouted,"does he think he can subdue a full-grown female dragon without any magic?”
To everyone's surprise, Bunce naturally and strangely picked up a golden egg from the nest under the nose of the Swedish short-nosed dragon. Everything was so incredible.
"Who can tell me what's going on?”Bagman was not the only one to be surprised, probably except Dumbledore, as he watched Bunce walk happily off the field with the egg to the judges 'table.
Dumbledore stood up and said,""He has completed the project.”
"Oh, grading, yes." Bagman seemed to be confused by what was happening.
"Dumbledore, what's going on, how is this possible?”asked Professor McGonagall incredulously.
"Well, you'll have to ask our client, and I must say, he's done a great job.”said Dumbledore, beaming at Bunce.
"Please explain it to us all.”said Professor McGonagall quietly.
"A relatively old spell, mainly used to imprison a large object, but due to the long casting time and low accuracy, it was gradually forgotten by people.”Bangs said with a smile.
" Then why doesn't the fire dragon breathe fire?" asked Madame Maxime.
"That's because I put an Extinguishing Curse on it.”Bance said.
"Unbelievable. Our student, Mr. Foley, has used a mysterious method to pass the first task. Now, the judges will begin to give marks.”Bagman shouted excitedly.
Madame Maxime-raised her wand into the air. A long silver ribbon shot out of the wand, twisting into a large eight.
Next was Mr. Crouch, who blew a nine into the air.
Dumbledore gave it a nine as well, and the crowd cheered louder.
Bagman gave it-ten points.
In the end, with Karkaroff giving him a score of six, Bangs was arranged to sit in the lounge at the back.
" Wait here for the other warriors to finish their projects," Professor McGonagall instructed.
"You did a great job, Mr. Foley.”she added as she walked out of the small tent.
" Thank you for your compliment, Professor." Bance said.
The rest of the show was more exciting than Bunce's, especially when Harry's attempt to snatch the golden egg with his broomstick set the stands ablaze with cheers that lasted for a long time.
"Ah, you're here?" said Bunce, looking at Ron behind Harry.
"Yes, I'm sorry. I shouldn't be jealous, if you're still willing to treat me as a brother.”said Ron apologetically.
"Forgive him, Bunce," said Harry, hugging the egg.
"Well, I hope you're not going to be that kind of fool again, Ron.”Bangs said with a smile.
"Absolutely not." Ron promised.
"Oh, Harry, are you all right?" said Hermione, entering the tent.
"I'm fine. I'm fine." said Harry.
"How did you do it?" said Hermione, turning to Bunce.
"Yeah, it's simply too surprising.”said Ron.
"It's just an ancient spell. It's normal that no one has seen it before.”Bance said.
"But-"
They were interrupted by a burst into the tent. It was Charlie Weasley, Ron's brother.
"You've done a splendid job, listen, I've got to run, I'm going to send an owl to Mum, I swore I'd tell her everything-oh, I can't believe it! Oh, I almost forgot-they told me to let you know that you'll be here for a few more minutes. Bagman has a few words to say to the champions.
Fleur and Krum came in, Bagman following them.
"You all did well!" Bagman leapt into the tent, looking as happy as if he had just made it through a dragon. "Alright, I only have a few words to say to you. The second event will begin at 9:30 a.m. on February 24th next year. Before that, you can rest for a long time--but we'll leave some questions for you to consider! Look down at the golden eggs you're holding in your hands, and you'll see that they can be opened to see the seams there? You must solve the clue provided in the egg-that will tell you what the second task is, and you can prepare! Is everyone clear? No problem? Alright, you can go now!"
Bunce and Harry left the tent, found Ron and Hermione, and the four of them walked back around the edge of the forest, chatting all the way. Then, just as they had rounded the grove, a witch jumped out from behind it.
It was Rita Skeeter. She was wearing a bright green robe today, and the shorthand pen in her hand matched the color of the robe very well.
"Congratulations, Harry!" she said, smiling at Harry. How did you feel when you faced the fire dragon? How do you feel now? Do you think the judges are fair?”
"Yes, I can have a word with you," said Harry angrily."Goodbye."”
With that, he set off for the castle with Bunce, Ron, and Hermione.
